CCSD 89 families:

With just a few days left in this surreal school year, it is natural for families to think about the 2020-21 school year. The best answer we can give right now is: at this time, we do not know what the fall will look like.

Of course, we hope learning can resume safely in a traditional, in-person setting. But we also have to prepare for the possibility that the school year could start with remote learning, or begin with a hybrid of in-person and remote learning.

We are one of thousands of districts working through these issues that have very little precedent in this country. We are speaking with health and educational experts to design the safest and best possible educational experience no matter the circumstances.

Not all of these decisions will be ours to make. The state or regional Board of Education may mandate certain protocols, as they do in other non-pandemic situations.

With so much unknown, the district can promise this:
  • We will communicate the next steps as soon as we know them. The unsettled nature of next school year makes it difficult for all of us to plan, so we will share information quickly and well before the start of the school year. New information will be sent via email and posted on the district's website.
  • We will be prepared to educate your students in any scenario. Even as the CCSD 89 staff worked through transforming this year's educational delivery, our team has also been planning for multiple scenarios to start next year.
We know that you are worried about your kids and their learning. So are we. We have dedicated ourselves to this profession because we believe in the power of education to change lives. We have not altered that mission.

We also have not changed our commitment to student safety. We know many of you have students with underlying health issues. If our buildings are open, we will continue to do everything we can to keep our schools clean and safe.

Our staff has not only been teaching during these eight weeks, they have been doing extensive research on the best ways to deliver effective remote learning. No matter what is ahead, we can do this.

I am encouraged by the reports from our staff. Although school stopped so abruptly this year, 98.9 percent of our families are regularly engaging in learning activities, and we are working to provide more support to the remaining families.

We're so appreciative that you see the value of learning. It gives us the fuel to keep going. This is an amazing community to be a part of. Thank you for all you do to support CCSD 89 students.

Free lunches will be available throughout summer

Free lunches will continue to be available to anyone who wants food throughout the summer. Families will still be able to pick up lunches from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at Briar Glen or Glen Crest.

On Monday, families can pick up two meals; on Wednesday, families can pick up three lunches. More info:  https://bit.ly/3czI0qo
Families encouraged to share feedback at the end of remote learning

At the end of this school year, the district will be gather feedback from families about their experiences with remote learning. Students in fourth through eighth grades will also have an opportunity to share their thoughts.

We will be using new survey software that will generate more engagement with the people taking the survey, and richer feedback for our staff. Your responses will help guide our summer work in preparing for 2020-21. You can learn more about how these "Thoughtexchanges" work here:  https://youtu.be/a1Z-CAONdGo

Please share both your struggles and successes. While we want honest and open feedback, we only ask that you not use specific staff member or student names in your responses. Those issues should be addressed directly with the staff member or their supervisor.

Registration for the 2020-21 school year is open

Thank you to all the families that have registered for the 2020-21 school year. If you have not yet registered, please do so as soon as possible. You will need your individual SnapCode, which was mailed to your home address in March. Families that have concerns about the 2020-21 school year are encouraged to register.

If you are not able to pay registration fees at this time, register and mark the option for "free waiver" or "pay by check". The district will follow up at a later time. If your family leaves CCSD 89 prior to the start of school, you can be unenrolled and your registration fees would be returned. More info: https://bit.ly/2UTPRsw
Second blood drive added, plus more ways to help

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the CCSD 89 community, we were able to fill all available spots for the May 6 blood drive. The district has opened a second blood drive from 2 to 7 pm. on Tuesday, May 26, at Glen Crest. You can sign up here: https://ht.heartlandbc.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/5585532

Thanks to donors who have given more than $3,000, several local at-risk families will be receiving food and clothing support in the next few weeks. Donations made to the District 89 PEP Fund are being designated to support CCSD 89 families affected by the pandemic. Donate here: https://www.schoolpay.com/pay/for/PEP-District-89-Fund/ScdiwXJ?p=yes
