Greetings and all good wishes to you, the faithful community of Marsh Chapel!
First, amid all the changes and uncertainties of our current moment, please be assured that I and the entire Chapel staff have you in prayer. We are with you, we are for you, and we carry a daily pastoral embrace of you. Given the challenges of the day and hour, we have an added dimension in our prayer lives—and again, we are praying for you.
Second, our worship patterns continue to be modified here at Marsh Chapel. While we have long been both an actual and a virtual congregation, for the time being, our devotional rhythm has shifted almost fully to the latter. We strongly encourage all of you to worship with us virtually—through the WBUR 90.9 FM service broadcast, at 11:00 on Sunday mornings—until we can once again safely open our doors. Also, our leadership, staff, and chaplains have prepared a full Holy Week of worship opportunities. Especially in these times, so often frustrating and isolating, the voice of Marsh Chapel may offer you hope, inspiration, and even joy, come Sunday. Do join us!
A fallow field is one that one that is left unseeded through a growing season to restore its fertility. To put the very best face on things, the COVID-19 challenge has left our field here at Marsh Chapel fallow. So we heed Howard Thurman’s wise counsel—"Fear not the fallow!”—and we look forward to the fertile years to come. Meanwhile, we must count on you to continue your strong financial support for us. Our full ongoing ministry—in particular, our ministry of music and our talented musicians—welcomes and needs your fulsome support.
I can think of no better way to close this letter than to state once again the envisioned mission of Marsh Chapel, which is to be a heart for the heart of the city and a service in the service of the city. We seek to help the transcendent love and power of God become incarnate in our time, in our place, and in our life. Now more than ever, for that good work to thrive, we need your support—and we thank you for your generosity, past, present, and future!
Grace and peace,
Bob

Spiritual Provisions: Sustenance for the Soul
|
Throughout Christian history, Lent has been a time dedicated to the teaching and encouraging of new believers. During the season of Catechism, spiritual students learned the basic tenants of the Christian faith through the study of prayer, scripture, creeds, and the sacraments leading to their baptism. The catechism season of Lent represented an embracing of the spiritual necessities in order to prepare for the new life of Easter. This year for our Lenten Devotional, we continue this tradition of embracing our faith with the theme of Spiritual Provisions. In a year that has felt like a Spiritual Wilderness for many of us, it is good and holy to open our hearts to the Spiritual Provisions that God has provided for us through the traditional prayers, creeds, and sacraments of our faith. Weekly we will explore a different aspect of Christianity and provide ecumenical reflections from our staff and community. We will also be joined once again by the Marsh Chapel Choir, who will provide Lenten anthems and musical offerings for further reflection and spiritual nourishment.
Newcomers to our devotional series can sign up to receive daily emails by clicking on the image above.

The Marsh Fellows is a new internship program for undergraduate students exploring life’s big questions around meaning, purpose, authentic success, and happiness. The internship program is run by Dr. Jessica Chicka, jchicka@bu.edu, and the Rev. Dr. Karen Coleman, revkaren@bu.edu .
The goal of the internship is to nurture the intellectual, ethical, and spiritual life of participants who are willing to work with a wide spectrum of people. Students are prepared to lead challenging conversations that include conflicting worldviews, moral convictions, and religious practices, as well as discuss questions that have no definitive answers.
Meet the current Marsh Fellows and read about their projects.
