Mingling
by Kim Stafford

Remember how we used to do it—
weaving through the crowd, brushing
shoulders, fingers touching a sleeve,
adjusting a lapel—first an old friend here,
then turn to banter with a stranger, finding
odd connections—“You’re from where?...You
know her!”—going deeper into story there, leaning
back in wonder, bending close to whisper, secrets
hidden in the hubbub, as if in the middle of this
melee you have found a room and lit a lamp…
then the roar of the crowd comes back,
someone singing out a name, another
bowing with a shriek of laughter,
slap on the back, bear hug void
of fear? Imagine!
Just imagine.

WANDERLOVE Installer and Artist Calder Brannock Comes for First Site Visit in Danville on June 8
On June 8th Calder Brannock, who will be installing our WANDERLOVE: A Stitch in Time Exhibition, did his first site visit to see the stretch of River Trail that will be Yarn Bombed during the last week of June. Put on your comfortable walking shoes and bring the kids and the dog and come check out what it is all about. We will have hundreds of color fiber panels that will be installed soon along the River Walk Trail in the River District between the Martin Luther King Junior Bridge and the Pedestrian Bridge Behind the Science Center. Twenty-five Community groups have knitted, crocheted, and up-cycled to create this massive community art installation.

We thank our Community Partners: Boys & Girls Club of the Danville Area, Boys & Girls Club of Chatham, VA ,Center for Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness – CCECC, Chatham Knitting Mills, Collidescope, Danville VA, Crochet Guild of Prince William County, Dan River Nonprofit Network,Danville Neighborhood Development Corp, Danville Public Libraries: Ruby B. WANDERLOVE Schedule of Events
Through the pandemic winter, participants were invited to create their own assembled yarn covering, using materials they had on hand in their own homes – T-shirt fabric, thread, and recycled sweaters! Knitted, crocheted and constructed fabric contributions were added to our "WANDERLOVE: A Stitch in Time" Yarn Bomb, creating an assembled reflection of the community in bright, joyful colors.
On Saturday, June 26, there will be a Pop-Up Gallery at 530 Craghead Street for public viewing of the Fiber Art Panels prior to their installation.
On Sunday, June 27, there will be an Installation Workshop with installer Calder Brannock from 2-5pm at the 530 Craghead Street Pop Up Gallery. Anyone interested in helping to install the panels is invited and encouraged to attend.
Starting Monday, June 28, the panels will be installed along the Riverwalk Trail from the
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge, along the Riverwalk Trail, over the Pedestrian Foot Bridge and back along the other side of the Riverwalk Trail. Areas in the River District will also be installation sites for the Fiber Art/Yarn Bombing. All 11 Riverwalk entrances will be installation sites for the Fiber Art/Yarn Bombing.
On July 4, the Exhibition will be officially open to the public for all to enjoy. The exhibition will be up until September 28, 2021, at which time, the panels will be removed and up-cycled for other fiber projects.

Summer Art &Theater
Explorers Camp
This past week, the Museum has welcomed the beautiful sound of laughter, the pitter-patter of small (and medium) sized feet. The DMFAH has teamed up with the Smokestack Theater Company to offer campers opportunities to grow and learn about theater and studio arts. We believe strongly that theater arts and studio arts help campers adjust to an ever- changing (and sometimes stressful) world. It is now, more than ever, important to show children how to draw on their creative abilities, and grow a next generation of performance and studio artists in Danville.

Thank you to the tremendous Summerstack Team and to the Museum Intern Team for all your efforts to make this summer a good summer.
Upcoming Events
BLUE MUSE PROGRAM On July 23:
Jeffrey Scott
(One of the Great Virginia Blues Players)

The rich musical tradition in the East Coast country blues owes much to ragtime, traditional Appalachian Mountain music, African American string music, spirituals and gospel, rural African American dance music, and the early white country music of the 1930s.

This blues style features intricate fingerpicking with alternating bass, and a simultaneous syncopated melody picked on the treble strings. Often called Piedmont Blues, this style has a certain sweetness in the guitar style, but the thematic of these blues can be about the sacred, or the profane, about hardship, struggle, murder, pain, suffering, drinking, trouble with the opposite sex, and more. It’s the blues where if you don’t understand the English, the singing and melody sounds so lovely and sweet, but if you hear and understand the words you can feel the bite.

Down in Culpeper, Virginia, Jeffrey Scott is carrying on the acoustic Piedmont Blues tradition taught to him by his grand-uncle, the late great John Jackson, as well as from the musical and community heritage of the Blue Ridge Mountain Region His repertoire includes Piedmont Blues, Country Blues, Gospel, and Ragtime.

This is a ticketed event with limited seating – for more information contact the DMFAH at info@danvillemuseum.org.
Danville Museum Partners on First-of-Its Kind Summer Internship Program in the Region
In this 8-week program, more than 50 individuals ages 14 and older will be paid $10 an hour at job sites throughout the city until the end of July. Both Danville and Pittsylvania County governments have contributed funding to the initiative led by the West Piedmont Workforce Development Board.

“Work-based learning opportunities, specifically internships, are critical experiences that connect students and young adults to career opportunities and create relevance aligned with their academic experience,” Julie Brown of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, said in a news release.

In Danville, the $200,000 project is built on a partnership between the city, schools, the Institute and Goodwill Industries. The Danville Museum has partnered with Goodwill to bring seven internships to the DMFAH campus. Two interns will be assisting Smokestack with summer theater programming and five interns will be assisting the museum with the community project called WANDERLOVE, a Post Pandemic Outdoor Installation along the Riverwalk, and also assisting with DMFAH Collections maintenance and Gallery programs in the River District.
An Eco Message From the Garden Club of Virginia: Refuse to use
Many of you are already “all on board” and have implemented environmental preserving measures at home and wherever you go. We are learning together, sometimes daily, new ways to cut down on disposables. It may be no secret to you that old maxims such as “waste not, want not” are being recycled as Poor Richard’s advice made for great guidance then – and may be even more important today.

At the Garden Club of Virginia’s historic Kent-Valentine House headquarters, some Green
Guidelines include:

·       When entertaining at your house/property consider discussing with your caterer that you prefer menu options not requiring (plastic) utensils. Ask for glassware and serving plates. Use only recyclable or biodegradable plates and cups. No plastic bottles or Styrofoam
·       Some of you may wish to switch to cloth hand towels instead of paper.
·       At night, turn off lights which are not providing security.
·      Also important and practical, compost pruning scraps in your historic gardens.

The Garden Club of Virginia thanks you for doing your part in protecting our environment. Our future depends on you. What is old is new again!

Yoga on the Danville Museum Lawn: Good Vibes and Soulful Stretches
10:30 AM – 11:30 AM EDT
FREE Outdoor Yoga @ Danville Museum

Description
Please join us for an outdoor yoga class! We will follow social distancing guidelines. Class is suitable for all levels from beginners to advanced. Limited to 15 participants.
What COVID-19 has reminded us of more than anything else, is that humans are not meant to sit in a chair for eight hours a day. With joints getting stiffer, but the summer season still going strong, we’re looking into the weekly Yoga on the Lawn series at the DMFAH, from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Saturdays.

Social distancing measures mean that all guests must bring their own mats and remain 6 feet apart—a distance still perfectly passable by good vibes and soulful stretches.
