Join the 2020 Labeling for Lent Campaign!

During Lent, Catholics eat more fish to be in greater solidarity with men, women, and children in need. This includes caring for those catching our seafood, many of whom are victims of exploitation and labor trafficking, Labeling for Lent is a national initiative to urge seafood producers, suppliers, and retailers to make public, through product labeling or other means, their efforts to fight human trafficking in their product supply chains.
This year, the Labeling for Lent Campaign seeks to encourage the wholesale company Sysco to better inform its customers (schools, restaurants, health care facilities) about efforts they are making to ensure their supply chains are free of forced labor.
It is important to appreciate Sysco's efforts to
prioritize
seafarers and fishers' labor rights. Per Sysco's 2019 social responsibility report, top priorities include "responsible sourcing to ensure fair treatment of workers and communities". The next step is to make these efforts widely known to Sysco customers so they can make informed and ethical selections when deciding which seafood products to purchase!

Greensburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Prayer & Outreach Group to Combat Trafficking
Last month, the Greensburg DCCW Prayer & Outreach Group to Combat Human Trafficking held their 5th Annual St. Bakhita Day of Prayer & Education. The group moves their event on an annual basis to a different parish in the diocese to reach more churches, groups, and individuals. This year, Epiphany of Our Lord Parish in Monessen was host. They encouraged individuals to bring in new or gently used bras for
Free the Girls
, an organization that provides safe economic opportunities for survivors of sex trafficking.
Janet Berna of the Pittsburgh Diocese and a Fair-Trade Ambassador with SERVV, had a variety of domestic and international items available. Attendees also were led in a prayer service and Shepherd presentation that introduced them to the life of St. Josephine Bakhita.

Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte's Respect Life Program and Anti-Trafficking Task Force
Over 120 people attended an educational event in Mooresville on human trafficking and how to combat it in their everyday lives. The event, co-sponsored by St. Therese Church and Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte's Respect Life Program and Anti-Trafficking Task Force, began with a mass and continued with a fair trade sale. Kara Grifin, a member of the task force and parishioner of St. Matthew's Church in Charlotte, encourages the purchase of ethically sourced coffee, sugar, jewelry, and clothes as an important way to help prevent forced labor in the supply chains of the products we love.

Our Lady of the Chesapeake Catholic Church

Earlier this year, Our Lady of Chesapeake Parish worked to support survivors of human trafficking by collecting "Pocket Change for Hope and Freedom". All proceeds went to Catholic Relief Services for the purchase of Survivor Kits for trafficked girls.
