Letter from the President
Welcome to the AGASC for 2020. The year started with a General Meeting at
Susan Elms' mansion (Pat Warren's Studio). Thank you Susan and Pat. At the meeting,
Jon Simpson and I were announced as being reelected to two more years as Treasurer and President. We had discussions on upcoming year's activities. We hope you will join us as we offer exciting tours, lectures, gallery shows and workshops throughout the year.
The Glass Guild's Patio Sale is coming up in May 9th and 10th. If you are not selling your art on the patio, then stop by and support your fellow artists.
The Board met on February 9th and decided we are going to hold our next General Meeting on Sunday, June 28th at Tom Maroz's studio. We plan on having Tom discuss his dichroic glass process after the meeting. So, mark your calendars and plan now to attend our next meeting. You can also check out AGASC.org for all the latest information.

Il Deserto Fiorito Exhibit
Join in the fun as we go to the desert for a visit to the
Coachella Valley Art Center (CVAC) where our members Paul Messink, Joyce Rooks, Blake Warner and Susan Fuller have studios! They teach classes there as well, and the director Bill Schinsky gives a great tour. There is also some glass blowing there along with ceramics, and several painters and printmakers. We will tour the CVAC and have lunch nearby.
Then we will head to Palm Springs Art Museum
for a mind blowing exhibit of one of the greatest living artists working glass, Maistro Lino Tagliapietra. AGASC will cover your entrance fees at the museum and we will meet as a group before going into the exhibit. Visit the

We recommend heading out from San Diego by 8:15 AM to arrive in Indio at the CVAC by 11:00 AM. We will notify you our plans for lunch once we get our list of attendees together.

An Article With the Mingei International Museum
How did you interpret Metamorphosis,
the theme of the Museum's juried exhibition?
I wanted a craft object to convey my feelings about the word metamorphosis. I have a piece that I started decades ago that is actually named Metamorphosis. When contacted about the show I said, "Where is that piece where is that piece, I know I made that piece!" I got to thinking about these heads that I cast about 35 years ago and put them on the cog maybe 10-15 years ago. I started looking at it and to me it was very external. What I wanted to do was discuss metamorphosis as a more internal thing. So I started looking at deconstructing vessels. These ideas were already happening in my head when you guys reached out to me. It's kind of crazy! The vessels are blown with the RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) ring, cooled, sliced in half and then glued together "backwards" to expose the inside. The ring is called the RISD ring because it was something that people started at RISD in the 80's.
You do team building and classes here, how is that?
I am so grateful and fortunate to know how to do this ancient form of art, this craft, and I feel like it is my responsibility to put it out there. There are so many people who have trade secrets and are keeping everything inside and I say no! I just want to share everything. I don't teach people how to make my work. I teach people how to blow glass. Once someone understands the material and the challenges, then they can go make their own work.
You do team building and classes here, how is that?
In glass blowing there is lots of physics, lots of chemistry, lots of fearlessness and fun. It is super crazy and fun stuff but you have to know your science. You have to be brave, you have to have a sense of adventure you have to like chemistry and physics. If I put my tools up on the bench, and you walked into the glass museum on Murano, you would see tools that look almost identical to these. From 1200 to today everything is pretty much the same, the only thing that's changed is technology.
Glass has a universal language. I have blown glass in many different countries and I can walk in and know how to communicate with others because it's a visual language. You can move your head or your hands and understand what each other wants or needs. That is a really magical aspect of glass. It is an unspoken language.
That is my passion. I love blowing glass, I love teaching glass blowing, I love prison, I love art.

Fabulous Mosaic Installation
The Grand Canyons of La Jolla Shores Map
It's finally happening!!! The Grand Canyons of La Jolla Shores Map is finally going in! It represents the undersea canyons off of La Jolla and over a hundred native marine species and is comprised of over a million hand-placed and glued glass and ceramic tiles that are installed directly into wet concrete. It will soon be in Kellog Park in La Jolla Shores for people to enjoy. This project has been years in the making was commissioned by the late and great o
ceanographer Walter Munk and his wife Mary through the Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans.
This amazing and wonderful project was designed and executed by our esteemed member Robin Brailsford, her partner Wick Alexander, and their talented assistant: another member of AGASC, glass blower and ecology minded Mariah Armstrong Conner
with mapping support from Scripps ocean scientists.
Robin has designed and executed many Public Art projects over her long career, including a recent installation at the front of Escondido's California Center for the Arts. The process of LithoMosaic that she developed is formulated to withstand any and all weather conditions, including difficult ocean front conditions.
This mosaic is a 2400 square foot educational representaion of the underwater park and ecological reserves at La Jolla Shores. It features over 100 examples of local sea life including sea urchins, hermit crabs, seals, and a 31 foot J.J., the Orphaned Baby Gray Whale. From the beginning the project has engaged the community including Mayor Kevin Faulkner, Council Member Barbara Bry, and representatives from the San Diego Park and Recreation Department, Coastal Commission, Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists and researchers, the Birch Aquarium Education Department, Ocean Discovery Institute, the Kumeyaay Nation, La Jolla Shores Merchants Association, Marine Protected Areas, as well as lifeguards, scuba divers, surfers, and snorkelers to ensure that this project will serve to promote an understanding of the urgency to become better stewards for our oceans and environment.
The specialty installation process by Shaw and Sons happens in sections.Once installed there will be interactive tools for people to identify the various creatures of sea life and understand their significance and meaning to our planet. The installation will involve an additional $500,000 for the concrete, interpretive panels, and landscaping. For further information about donations to this effort go to the website

Last but not least!
Our annual Holiday Party was a retro smash!
The last event of the year for the Art Glass Association is the Holiday Party! And not an event to miss! Originally just a fun celebration and gift exchange this has evolved into a wonderful tradition of a costume party several years ago when someone suggested adding an ugly Christmas sweater contest. Quite a few members hand made original creations for the event and it was so well received it was decided we would make it a tradition by creating a theme each year so our members could scour their closets and thrift stores to make an award winning statement to win "best costume" honors. In the last few years the themes have been a PJ Party,
home in the 50's, Roaring 20"s, Casbah, and this year was 60's-70's hippies and disco. Each year our members get into the spirit and go all out to make it fun for all. Devora and Ron have been so generous to host it for several years in their lovely Point Loma home. We thank them and hope to continue this fun tradition.
