Literacy Lines
- Spring 2021 -
Greetings!

I can’t believe it’s already March again and that we have been “distancing” for more than a year now! No one could have predicted back then what the future would hold for us. We are also truly appreciative of the support, trust, and recognition we enjoy from our community.

With spring approaching and vaccines being more and more available to the public, our hearts are full of hope.

Best,
Roopal Mehta Saran, Executive Director
Racial Equity and Immigrant Integration: An Introspection by Dr. Carole Bausell
LCNV’s Senior Fellow, Dr. Carole Vinograd Bausell, recently wrote an article published in the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) journal focused on racial equity and immigrant integration. In the article she emphasizes the concepts of equity and immigrant integration that have consistently served as guiding lights in the work with LCNV’s work with adult learners. She also shares the experiences of two students whose personal journeys touched her deeply and reveal challenges faced by many others in our field.

LCNV and the Power of Inclusion: Impact of Unconscious Bias
Thanks to funding provided by the City of Alexandria, LCNV was able to retain Sonia Aranza, a global diversity & inclusion strategist to provide a seminar to the LCNV Board of Directors and staff entitled: THE POWER OF INCLUSION: IMPACT OF UNCONSCIOUS BIAS©. This engaging learning experience is a vital foundation that provides a shared language and shared understanding of the impact of unconscious bias on organizational excellence.
LCNV Instructors Upskill Their Teaching
During the fall semester, more than 60 teachers, class aides, and supplemental tutors participated in LCNV’s professional learning community (a.k.a. “Instructor Chats”) to learn effective practices for remote instruction, trade tips and resources, and share learner success stories. These instructor chats have resumed for the spring semester – now held four times a week.

We would like to take a moment to recognize just a few instructors who have gone above and beyond upskilling their teaching practices.
Join Us for A Taste of Literacy on March 25th!
A Taste of Literacy is a FREE virtual celebration that will raise awareness and critical funds to open doors of opportunity to adult English language learners in Northern Virginia. This year's theme, "Look How Far I've Come", will feature stories from our learners whose hard work to learn English has helped them to overcome obstacles and reach their goals, even during a pandemic.
