March 6, 2020

Dear Friends,

Please Save the Date and plan to attend my 6th Annual District 3 Town Hall Meeting and Resource Fair on Thursday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m. at William Wirt Middle School, 6200 Tuckerman Street, Riverdale.

The 2020 Census is almost here! Over the next few weeks households will receive an invitation to respond online or by phone. Prince George's County lost out on $363 million over the past 10 years due to under counting. Please commit today to filling out the U.S. Census to ensure our future! The census is Safe, Easy and Accessible.

My office is delivering Census 2020 flyers and posters to schools and community centers across District 3 to encourage participation. Watch your mailbox for information from me or the US Census Bureau and pledge to be counted!

I was proud to testify in Annapolis yesterday in support of two important pieces of legislation which the Prince George's County Council voted to support. HB 1236 - Transit - Maryland Area Regional Commuter Train - Expansion of Service is sponsored by Delegate Jared Solomon and would require MTA to work with Virginia to expand MARC Commuter Rail through Union Station and into Virginia's VRE system. This is crucial to providing Maryland residents access to jobs in Virginia, including with Amazon, and attracting talent go grow jobs around commuter rail in Maryland.  HB1424 - Public-Private Partnerships - Process and Oversight, also sponsored by Del. Solomon, would strengthen oversight of future public private partnerships including increasing transparency and tightening financial controls.

I continue to actively support legislation to ban plastic bags across the state. Unfortunately, local legislation to allow Prince George's County to charge a fee for bags failed in the Prince George's County Delegation. However,  HB0209/SB0313 - Plastics and Packaging Reduction Act, which I also testified in support of, continues to move forward. I urge you to reach out to your Senator and Delegates and urge their support of this crucial legislation for reducing litter and single-use plastics in Maryland.

This is also a busy time for legislation at the Prince George's County Council. Thursday morning, the Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee, which I chair, passed CB-06-2020, legislation I proposed to clarify the type of development eligible for Expedited Transit Oriented Development. I was also proud to join Council Member Jolene Ivy in proposing CB-07-2020, legislation to allow Market Halls in the County.

On Tuesday,  CR-07-2020 , a Resolution Concerning the Climate Action Plan and Sustainability Action Group was presented by a majority of the Council. This resolution establishes a climate action commission to create a climate action plan for the County.

Did you know that April marks the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day and the creation of the EPA? In the next few weeks I am launching a District 3 Environmental Challenge to urge all residents to take action in April to support the environment. I hope you will join me. Watch for details coming soon!

I know the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is on all of our minds. Yesterday evening the first cases were reported in Maryland. The Prince George's County Health Department is working closely with other agencies and is taking steps to keep Prince Georgians safe and healthy. Here are some resources to assist:

I urge all residents to take everyday preventative steps to slow the spread of respiratory illnesses likes colds, the flu, and viruses:
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

As always, feel free to reach out to a member of my District 3 team or me if we can help you in any way. #onlytogether
