Library news: Fall Celebration edition
Although it doesn't feel like fall today, we're deep into our preparations for our 22nd annual Friends of the Library Fall Celebration coming up this Saturday, September 21st.

It's always so gratifying to see how many community members and local businesses step up to contribute to this event for us. It's one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and we couldn't do it without your support! The Friends of the Library are working hard to make this a fun evening for everyone.

Tickets are selling fast and tickets for our popular book basket raffles are selling even faster -- stop by the library to check out the fun baskets that we have on display. You can save a little time if you bring your return address labels to stick on your ticket stubs! ;)

The Fall Celebration isn't the only thing happening at our library this month. Get out your calendar so you can mark down some interesting programs on Brazilian music, arts businesses, grown-up story hour, and more. You also won't want to miss a fascinating "Armchair Travel" program with Gary Theisen as we journey to Japan in winter TOMORROW, 9/17 at 4:30 p.m.

Sorry to throw so much at you in one newsletter, but remember, you can always follow us on Facebook or check out our website for the latest schedule.

See you Saturday!

Winter in Japan - Armchair travel with Gary Theisen

Join us tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday, September 17 at 4:30 p.m., when Gary Theisen takes us on a journey to far northern Japan (Hokaido) where the rare Red Crowned Cranes dance and mate, Stellar Sea Eagles feed in ice strewn seas and snow monkeys bask in warm geothermal springs.

Gary and Ginny Theisen photographed these spectacles and more during a mid-winter trip to Japan in February of this year. They will give a talk about their experiences, share photographs, and discuss how their images of people, architecture and food provide insights into cultural understanding. Join us for this free program on Tuesday, September 17 at 4:30 p.m.

Brazilian music group Paulo Padilha e Bando

Catch the samba swing of Brazil with Paulo Padilha e Bando . Padilha is in town as part of the Arts Midwest World Fest program with the Historic Ironwood Theatre , and will visit the Mercer Library at 1:00 p.m. on September 24 for a music and dance workshop for the community.

Born in São Paulo, Padilha travels between the sounds of traditional samba and other Brazilian popular musical styles. Padilha is a master musician and educator that specializes in rhythm and song workshops for all ages. His clever lyrics tell about the urban lifestyle in Brazil in a sharp but good-humored way. With a band of master samba musicians and dancers, Paulo Padilha e Bando will make you want to dance all the way home! Bethany Ann Hellen from Bethany Ann Hellen Studios will be on hand to give some informal instruction if the spirit moves you to get up and dance.

Before the workshop, Gail Ondresky has generously volunteered to provide a Brazilian food tasting at 12:15 p.m. Gail has taught cooking classes and the library in the past and those who've attended know what a great chef she is. Space for the food tasting is limited , so please call the library by Friday, September 20th to sign up - 715-476-2366.
The Arts as an economic anchor in the community

Artists and creative businesses can generate jobs and revenue, improve quality of life, and foster community.  Land O' Lakes Arts (LOLA) Board President and Wisconsin Arts Board member Lynn Richie and LOLA Program director Wendy Powalisz will discuss bringing out the creativity in their community in a free program on Wednesday, September 25 at 12:00 p.m. in the Mercer Community Center.

This program is part of the “Business Bites” series sponsored by the Iron County Development Zone, Mercer Public Library, and Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce. The series is designed for local business owners, prospective business owners, and residents to gain business skills and learn about potential economic development in the Iron County area. Light refreshments will be served.
