Please Bring Us Your Palm Fronds

Do you have any palm fronds/crosses in your home from previous Palm Sundays?  Do you want to dispose of them? Bring your old palms to church this Sunday and deposit them in the basket on the counter in the church lobby. We will ritually burn them on Shrove Tuesday, as part of the Pancake Supper event. Then we will bless and distribute the ashes to all who come forward on Ash Wednesday. Thank you.

Pancake Supper

Join us for our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 25 at 5:30 pm.
This event is free to our St. John's family.

Dinah's Closet Returns!

T he Women of St. John's will open Dinah's Closet on Sunday, March 1 after both services. This is a unique fundraiser. We ask for your donations of men's and women's clothing and accessories, and then we sell them in Nale Hall for just $5 per item. You clear your closet, and we contribute the  money to the Church operating fund.
Two things to remember: we want gently used, quality items (like you might find in a nice resale boutique), and we can't accept them until the morning of March 1 at 7:30 a.m. (we don't have storage space).
Questions? Call Diane Gustafson 619-253-7298.

Tuesday Night Bible Study News

The next meeting of the Tuesday Bible Study group will be on March 3rd at 6PM to begin a new study, titled "Answers To Tough Questions," a 6-session study designed to help individuals speak with confidence about biblical truth - to "tune up your testimony," if you will - that will make us better witnesses for Christ.
All are welcome, but please contact Mike Gollihur if you will be new to our group, so that we can order enough study guides.

St. Patrick's Day Fundraiser

Our St. Patrick's Day dinner of Corned Beef and Cabbage will be on Saturday, March 21st at 6:00 pm.  Tickets are $20.00 per person and will be on sale beginning this Sunday.
Tickets will also be available in the office.

Did You Know?
Liturgy is flexible

The Holy Eucharist is the principle liturgy of Episcopal worship on the Lord's Day for the people gathered.

Our worship service contains two sections:  The Word of God and Holy Communion. In planning our worship services, we follow the Book of Common Prayer and on occasion when appropriate we may us the liturgical supplement Enriching Our Worship.  These two sources provide optional forms for the various parts of each section.

For instance the introductory part of the Word of God has alternated form; including a Penitential Form, which is appropriate for Lent.  Likewise, there are optional forms for the Prayer of the People, Offertory Sentences, and Eucharistic Prayers. The Dismissal also has several options; some including an Alleluia and some not.  Unless otherwise prohibited, it is not right or wrong to use a form containing Alleluia.  One may want to choose the form seasonally;  that being with an Alleluia for festive seasons (Christmas and Easter) and other Feast Days and a form without an Alleluia for the more ordinary times of the Church's liturgical year (Epiphany and Pentecost).

The ability to choose prayers and texts seasonally or for special occasions allows us the experience to the depth and breath of our liturgical prayer found in the Book of Common Prayer.

Opportunities For Service

Pill Bottle Ministry

Did you know that in developing countries, the pill bottle and cap is often more expensive than the medication inside. You can donate your empty prescription bottles! Just drop off your empty prescription bottles in our collection bucket located in the foyer- no need to peel the information off.  Our volunteers will take care of that for you! We will wash them and ship them to Matthew 25: Ministries.  Matthew 25: Ministries accepts donations of empty plastic pill bottles for inclusion in shipments of medical supplies and for shredding and recycling. Our pill bottle program fulfills the dual needs of improving medical care in developing countries and caring for our environment.

Please note that we can currently only collect the clear orange prescription bottles.  We have found that the others do not benefit the program.
Thank you for your support!
Emergency Food Pantry:

Jesus said, "Feed my sheep." John 21:17
The South Bay Community Services "Emergency Food Pantry" needs donations every month. It's easy to donate! We will focus on a different food category each month. Pick up a flyer from the narthex, carry in your car until your next trip to the market, purchase the food, and place it on the table in Nale Hall before the end of the month.  During the month of February, our featured items will be rice, pasta or mac & cheese.  Thank you for your support!

From the Prayer Journal of Fr. Jack Tolley

Love

Friends: I like to read about  Holy Men and Women. Their lives reflect how much they served and loved others. I think we Christians should always "be full of love for each other and God  following the example of Christ who loved you and gave himself to God as a sacrifice to take away your sins. And God was pleased, for Christ's love for you was like sweet perfume to him."
(Ephesians 5:2, The Living Bible.)
   I also believe we should "be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another." (Philippians 4:32)
And " regard others as more important than yourselves." (Philippians 2:3 )
And "Love one another." (John 13:34).

   What separates Christians, who totally entrust their lives to Jesus, from the secular world, is love. We live in this world but we are not of it. We have hope to keep us going, and the love and assurance  of Jesus that he will be with us no matter what challenges our daily life brings to us. He will love us through them. And one day we will pass on to live with him in his Father's kingdom where all of the rooms are 10 star rated, and those dear loved ones who arrived there before  you will be on hand to greet you!

Thank you for all the love you have shown to Sarah and I
and so
many others. You are very special people,
Father Jack

Reporting Misconduct

Safeguarding God's People

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May God's face shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
May God give you the grace never to sell yourself short;
Grace to risk something big for something good;
Grace to remember that the world is too dangerous for anything but truth
And too small for anything but love.
So, may God take your minds and think through them;
May God take your lips and speak through them;
May God take your hearts and set them on fire.
-William Sloane Coffin
