Miles Hartley
Tell us a little about yourself:

I’m from Kenosha, attended local public schools and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Madison. I’m a partner at the Guttormsen and Hartley, LLP law firm. My wife Jackie and I have 3 children; 2 daughters (Lauren, 19 and Sydney, 6) and a son (Colin, 11). We also have a dog, Marley, and 6 fish!
How long have you been volunteering for United Way of Kenosha County?

I started volunteering with the United Way 7 years ago; both as a Board member and then as a reading tutor at McKinley Elementary. I have also participated in the “Readers are Leaders” event several times.
How did you get involved with United Way of Kenosha County?

I was approached by a former board member about joining the UWKC board several years ago. Knowing the organizations reputation and amazing work it does in the community, I couldn’t say “Yes!” fast enough.
What is your favorite experience/story from your work with United Way of Kenosha County?

I am continually amazed by the “Readers are Leaders” tutoring Program at McKinley Elementary. I’m honored to be a really small part of this program. Seeing the progress the student makes both in their reading and confidence is so special. I always look forward to my tutoring days!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I grew up sailing on Lake Michigan and still enjoy doing that as much as possible. I love spending time with my family- preferably outdoors. I’m a Badger through and through, so I spend a lot of time cheering on the football team. I’m also a big Packer and Brewer fan and love watching those games as well.
What would you say to someone who is thinking of volunteering for United Way of Kenosha County?

There is no better way to invest in your community. Giving of your time, whether it is by tutoring, tax preparation or volunteering at events, is a just a small way to have a huge impact. The United Way’s is truly amazing!
What is your favorite quote?

“So it goes.” - Kurt Vonnegut
Tell us something that inspires you?

I’m inspired by the memories of my grandmother, Carolyn Hartley. She was extremely kind and treated everyone with respect and empathy. She was a tireless volunteer and was part of a lot or organizations around town committed to helping and supporting Kenosha County. She has always been an important role model in my life.
