OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING ON SHAVUOT
|

TIKKUN ZOOM SHAVUOT:
Thursday, May 28 evening and Friday, May 29 all day
TBZ will be participating in the Tikkun Shavuot Zoom organized by Temple Israel. 24 hours of virtual learning, beginning Thursday, May 28 at 5:00 p.m.
Join us for an hour or two, or brew a pot of coffee and stay up for a full day of learning, connection, and celebration.
This event is offered in partnership with the Center for Adult Jewish Learning, Hebrew College, Temple Ohabei Shalom, and Temple Beth Zion.
Teachers from TBZ include:
May 28 - 5:15pm Rabbi Ebn Leader:
“Entering Shavuot through the Gates of not-knowing”
We will study a teaching of the hasidic master R Menahem Nahum of Chernobyl in which he reflects on the movement we make from the days of counting the Omer into Shavu'ot as a movement from the wisdom of knowing into the wisdom of not knowing.
May 28 - 10:00pm Rav Tiferet Berenbaum
“Sleeping at Sinai: Was it really so bad?”
We have all night tikkun sessions to repair (letaken) the mistake of the Israelites who slept in at Sinai. But perhaps sleeping was a part of the plan and we should follow their lead. We'll study a text by R’ Tzaddok HaKohen of Lublin and consider if and when we should call it a night.
May 28 - 11:00pm Tyler Dratch
“Few are Guilty, All are Responsible:
Seeking Justice in The Biblical City of Refugee”
As we confront systematic oppression in our society we are forced to ask a series of difficult questions. How do we take responsibility for systematic racism, sexism, and ableism which we do not intentionally cause but of which we still play a role in perpetuating? The biblical case of the city of refuge provides a compelling case of individuals who are simultaneously innocent and guilty, and may help us take responsibility for systems of injustice that are bigger than ourselves. In this session we will examine the case of the city of refugees and have an open discussion about how we may understand our own unique role in fighting oppression in the world.
May 29 - 2:00pm Reb Moshe Waldoks
“Revelation as Divine/Humane Intimacy”

TBZ’s Reentry Planning
Although Governor Baker released a plan for phased reopenings for Massachusetts, that included the opening of religious services, we are not hearing of plans for resumption of normal activities, nor is TBZ moving to reopen at this time. TBZ is approaching this complicated process with caution and intention and has formed a Reentry Planning Group.
Although it may be awhile before we can come together physically, the vibrant Zoom/streaming davening and shul programming we have come to rely on will continue to bring us together virtually and safely.

Feeding Our
Hungry Neighbors
At TBZ, we are committed to caring for those most in need. If you are able, please consider getting involved and supporting the following initiatives:
Family Table:
Because we cannot bring crackers and soup, consider sending a donation to JF&CS: By check: 1430 Main Street, Waltham, MA 02451 with Family Table in the memo line. By card:
(under “Please Apply My Gift to” put “Family Table” and feel free to put “from TBZ” in the notes section.
Brookline Food Pantry:
The Brookline Food Pantry continues to need donations of rice, cereal, mac and cheese, oatmeal, and lentils as well as diapers, formula and baby food. To ensure safe social distancing and to minimize community exposure, the Pantry is offering a "drive by or walk by" drop off: Wednesdays from 11:30am-1:30pm, Thursdays from 9am-11am, and Fridays from 9:30am-12pm at their location at 15 St. Paul Street. You can find more information as well a make a donation online at by clicking here:
Brookline Food Pantry
Organizing TBZ to help our neighbors in Chelsea
As a community of low wage immigrant families, the Chelsea neighborhood has suffered some of the most losses, the most cases of Covid-19, and the most widespread unemployment. Families are running out of food daily.
Donations of non-perishable canned food can be left on the porch of TBZ Member Jen Wofford (173 Davis Ave, Brookline).

Stay Connected

Dues and Donations during Distancing
Since the office is closed and mail will be delivered and opened intermittently over the next few weeks, we invite you to use a credit card online, through ShulCloud which is a secure site, to keep up to date with dues, tuition, fees and donations.
For the next month or more we’ll be waiving the added credit card fee.
Using a credit card also means one less means of spreading the virus through mail carriers. If you choose to pay by check, please know that it will take longer for your check to be applied to your account and to clear the banking system.
