IN THESE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES...

At IFSPT, we stand in solidarity with all health care workers who are currently facing the COVID-19 pandemic as health professionals. You are the super heroes of our time, putting yourselves at risk to protect our communities and society as we know it. We are forever grateful.

If you are in quarantine and at home, you can also be helpful. Help each other by providing knowledge on how to see patients online, teach what you know to others, disseminate information and cheer up or help people around you - and make sure that you/they stay physically and socially active while keeping their distance.

Although sport is on hold, as it is not an essential necessity during these troubled times, we must not forget the famous words of Nelson Mandela: "Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does."

Let's remember those words and stick together globally as international sports physical therapists through these troubled times.

Yours,

Kristian Thorborg

THE SWISS SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATION OBTAINS PATHWAY APPROVAL FOR REGISTRATION
It is the IFSPT's pleasure to confirm that the Swiss Sports Physiotherapy Association's (SSPA) professional development accreditation process meets the IFSPT requirements and they are now the 12th country to have an approved pathway.

According to Colin Paterson, IFSPT Vice-President and Chair of the Registration Committee, "SSPA has long been a member of the IFSPT and a great support to our endeavors, and those of our other member organizations. We are thrilled to be able to confirm their professional pathway for registration."

The SSPA (founded in 2002) represents the interests of its 530 members towards the Swiss Physiotherapy Association, maintains contact with the Swiss Olympic Association, with sports governing bodies in Switzerland and abroad, as well as with sports medical partners. After years of partnership, at the end of 2018 the SSPA signed an official document of close cooperation with the Swiss Olympic Association, aiming for highest standards of athlete's care. The IFSPT recognition of the SSPA's professional development accreditation process represents another milestone in SSPA history, and will allow those SSPA members reaching the highest level of the SSPA curriculum to apply as Registered International Sports Physical Therapist (RISPT).

Mario Bizzini, former IFSPT board member, has been the point person with SSPA, also known as Sportfisio Switzerland, and has worked tirelessly to bring this confirmation to fruition.

COVID-19
With the fast evolving global situation created by the spread of COVID-19, we are aware that many of you have been impacted by the pandemic and the uncertainty it has created. WCPT and the congress programme committee will continue to monitor the situation relating to COVID-19, but for now planning is proceeding for an exciting WCPT congress in Dubai next April and we will advise you if there are any changes likely to impact the event.

WCPT is supporting its member organisations and their members with information and resources, in a number of languages, about COVID-19: www.wcpt.org/news/Novel-Coronavirus-2019-nCoV

Call for abstracts opens
The call for abstracts for poster and platform presentations is now open. The deadline is 30 July.

The WCPT congress offers you a unique opportunity to present to a global audience at the profession's largest international meeting. Whether you have been working on a research project or have an innovative service, practice, resource or theory to share, WCPT is encouraging physiotherapists from all over the world, at every level of the profession, to submit their abstracts.

Abstracts are invited that:
  • report on the latest research with original scientific data
  • address new and unique developments in practice, theory, education, management, policy and resources
  • describe innovative ways in which established methods have been adapted to meet the changing needs of practice

Resources for abstract submitters
If you have limited experience of abstract submissions, presenting at a WCPT congress or if English is not your first language, we have put together several tools to help you.

Selection criteria
Submitted abstracts will go through a blind peer-review process carried out by international reviewers.

The following principles will be used to review abstracts.
  • Does the report address a "significant" or "important" issue?
  • Do the methods/approach enable the question to be answered rigorously?
  • Have the data/findings been interpreted appropriately?
  • Are the contents of the abstract clear and logical?

Registration
Registration fees will be available to view on the congress website next month, including deadlines for early bird rates.

Registration will open in June.

Key sessions to be announced
Focused symposia sessions and speakers will be announced later this month.

UPCOMING CONGRESSES

In the context of COVID-19 and recent developments, the Belgian Federation of Sports Physiotherapy has decided to postpone the BFSP Congress 1st National Congress on Sports Physiotherapy to Saturday, 21 November 2020.

This decision was made based on the advice of the competent authorities and the measures that apply within the universities.

As the COVID-19 is quickly spreading around the world, our number one concern is the health and safety of delegates, speakers, exhibitors and staff.

Registrations will be transferred to the conference in November.

We are very grateful for the support of our exhibitors and participants so far and we hope to welcome you to Brussels on 21 November for the 1st National Congress on Sports Physiotherapy.

With kind regards,
The BFSP board
