Pirates ROCK Kickoff/ Community Tailgate
Pirates ROCK (Raising Outstanding Character Kids) is a program designed to surround our families with examples of strong character traits through school experiences, at home, and reinforced in the community. Each month our community and schools focus on character and leadership and students are recognized for exhibiting these traits and skills. On Friday, August 26, we kick off our 17th year of our character education program! To celebrate, wear your orange and black on Friday, join the community from 5-7pm at Price Chopper in Platte City for a community tailgate, and enjoy free popcorn at the first home football game!

Communication Reminders
There are several ways for parents to make sure they have up-to-date District information. This e-Treasures newsletter is sent monthly on the Friday after each Board of Education meeting, to all District families, staff, and any community member that signs up.

Another District communication medium is our School Messenger system that we use for phone calls and text notifications. As with any school district, PCR-3 must often contact hundreds of parents quickly for sudden changes in schedules due to emergencies, cancellation, or just important announcements.

We send a test call on the evening before our first early release (this year the call will be sent on September 13, before our first PLC day on September 14), to make sure we have accurate information in our database. If you DO NOT receive this call, please contact your child's school to correct the information.

If you have provided a cell phone number, you can also opt in to receive text alerts and messages. Simply text "YES" to 67587 (standard text messaging fees apply).
PCR-3 Community Advisory: Apply by September 12
Platte County School District recognizes the importance of community input to help set the future direction of our schools.

We are kicking off our second year of the PCR-3 Community Advisory to gather volunteers who will have an ongoing role to review the District’s progress toward its Comprehensive Strategic Improvement Plan goals, as well as to provide input regarding the District's general operation and specific issues impacting education activities and programs. Any District resident, employee, or student may participate in the ongoing work of this group.

We have reached out to existing members about continuing their participation and are now opening membership up to new members. If interested in serving on this advisory, please complete the application linked below by September 12. The first General Membership meeting will be held September 28.

BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
Pirate Pride: Teachers Recognized for Special Summer Learning
For the Pirate Pride portion of the August meeting, PCHS Librarian, Valorie Stokes, was recognized for her participation in the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History and Culture workshop: The Problem of the Color Line: Atlanta Landmarks and Civil Rights History in Atlanta, Georgia this July. She was chosen from among 110 applicants and had the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Civil Rights leaders at historic sites in Atlanta, study primary documents associated with the topic, and hear from living participants from the Civil Rights Movement in Atlanta.

Theresa Robertson, PLTW Teacher at PCMS, also shared her summer experience presenting at the Smithsonian National Education Summit this July. The 2-day conference focused on sessions related to ELA, social studies, science, and culture with award winning authors, National Teachers of the Year, and many more. The presentation was a result of work Mrs. Robertston was invited to complete with teachers across the country, creating a guided inquiry unit. They wrote it, tested it, and the project was selected for a session at this national conference.
2021 Bond Program Update
Each month, project managers for our 2021 Bond Program projects, provide an update on construction projects taking place throughout the District. At the August meeting, Matt St. Louis with Newkirk Novak Construction Partners, reviewed construction progress on the PCHS Rebuild Phase One project, and Darren Lee with McCown Gordon, reviewed construction progress on Platte Purchase Middle School project.
At the Platte County High School Phase One Project, the Siegrist Elementary parking lot renovation is now complete and open to thru traffic. Crews are continuing to work on the punch list and landscaping over the next few weeks. Site concrete, handrails, and building façade work will carry into the fall months. The classroom wing is wrapping up and punch list crews are moving in. In the commons, lights and flooring have begun, and kitchen equipment final connections are underway. In the athletic wing, prep work has begun for the gymnasium floor, scheduled for later this month. The project is on track to finish in December 2022.
At the Platte Purchase Middle School Project, construction has made great progress. Masonry block is continuing to drive the boat and is nearly 80% complete. The block structure will finish out on the two-story classroom, and then attention will focus on installing brick around the exterior of the building. Concrete trades are inside working on slab on grade in the administration and Project Lead The Way areas, and then will move to the locker rooms, commons, and cafeteria in the next three to four weeks. The power and water to the building is currently being routed from the main feeds from the street into the building. Next week focus will turn onto the site and start the right-of-way work off of Platte Purchase Drive and then begin work on the football and track areas.
