NOW THROUGH MAY 31:
10% off original art!

CRYP's social enterprises are a vital part of our organization. When you purchase items from our Keya Gift Shop online, for example, those proceeds directly benefit our kids - and right now, as we weather the Covid-19 crisis, your purchases will help us buy food for our daily meal program, continue internship programs for our teens, offer takeout meals for our community, and more.

CRYP is proud to make select items from the Keya (Turtle) Gift Shop available online, and proceeds benefit the nonprofit organization's youth programming and family services.

By supporting the Keya Gift Shop, you're also supporting  local artists and craftspeople; our youth artists, who are learning how their creative passions might translate to possible career opportunities; and our teen interns, who work in our gift shop every day, developing valuable skills in customer service, financial literacy and business management.

CRYP is actively seeking volunteers to work at our Eagle Butte campus.

CRYP Offers New Learning Space & Resources for Local Youth

With the recent arrival of Covid-19 on South Dakota's remote Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, the Cheyenne River Youth Project has continued to adapt its programming and facilities to meet the challenges of the ongoing public health crisis. Not only is the nonprofit youth organization pursuing remote learning opportunities for its teens, it also has transformed its gymnasium into a massive learning space.

CRYP installed a new Internet line, set up socially distanced work stations in its Cokata Wiconi gymnasium, and ensured it would have adequate amounts of cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, and masks. Then it invited young people back to Cokata Wiconi in limited numbers, adhering to all necessary health and safety guidelines.

Garreau and her team hope to add two large-screen TVs to the learning space, and they would like to make an additional 10 Chromebooks - Acer series 12 and up - available for use. Interested supporters can make contributions here; on the Square form, select "Cokata Wiconi Teen Center," and then write "Chromebook" or "Screens" in the comments box.

"We want to reassure our community that the kids' health and safety are our utmost concern, because they are so precious to us," Garreau said. "We would never put them in jeopardy. We are taking every possible precaution, while ensuring they have the resources they need and learning can continue."

"Cheyenne River Fights Covid-19" Art Contest Open to Youth Ages 4-17

CRYP is hosting an art contest for Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation youth ages 4-17. The theme of the contest is "Cheyenne River Fights Covid-19," and the deadline for dropping off finished artwork at CRYP is 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 29.

The nonprofit youth organization will select three winners to receive cash awards for their work. First place will receive $300, second place will receive $200, and third place will receive 100. All artwork will be judged on the following criteria: creativity/originality, connection to the theme, and skills.

"We want to our young people to have an opportunity to share how they, their families, and their community are fighting Covid-19 - physically, spiritually, and otherwise," said Julie Garreau, CRYP's executive director.

"We encourage them to dig deep, search their imaginations, and share their stories, because their voices matter," she added. "What does it look like to fight an invisible enemy? How do you keep your body and spirit safe and well? How can you lean on your culture and your ancestors to help you in this fight? Let's show the world how we do it on Cheyenne River!"

CRYP Announces Postponement of RedCan 2020

CRYP announced this week that it is officially postponing RedCan 2020, the sixth annual invitational graffiti jam on South Dakota's Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. At press time, the nonprofit youth organization is considering new dates in August.

The eagerly anticipated RedCan event typically is held in late June. With Covid-19's confirmed arrival on the remote Great Plains reservation three weeks ago, the need to postpone became clear.

"Our ongoing situation with Covid-19 blindsided us in a way we never could have imagined," said Julie Garreau, CRYP's executive director. "Life as we understood it has changed; however, our dedication to serving our young people stands, unwavering, and we will not surrender the progress we have made when our youth turn to us for both reassurance and hope.

"We are a rock for them in an uncertain time, when they need a steady foundation more than ever," she continued. "We will adapt, and we will remind them that they, and our Lakota Nation, will do more than survive. We will make it through this together, and we will thrive."

Keya Cafe Gift Cards Provide Discounts
& Free Meals to Community

CRYP is selling gift cards for the Keya Cafe & Coffee Shop, its farm-to-table, on-site social enterprise. Not only will the gift cards allow Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation community members to arrange - and gift - special meals for loved ones, friends, and neighbors, they will provide a new way to support food security during the Covid-19 crisis.

"We've started a fund for the gift card project that will allow us to offer discounted and free meals," explained Julie Garreau, CRYP's executive director. "Customers can participate in a drawing when they arrive, and then receive a percentage off their meal."

Those who wish to support CRYP's Covid-19 programs and services can make online contributions here, and selecting "Covid-19 Relief Fund" or "Keya Cafe Gift Cards."

Every meal and gift card purchase directly benefits CRYP's ongoing mission in the community, allowing staff to continue limited programs and services for the duration of the crisis. And, supporters everywhere can help improve food security on Cheyenne River by contributing to the Keya Cafe gift card project.

Volunteer Spotlight:
Shayne Case

My name is Shayne Case. I am 43 years old, and I am an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, with many beloved family members living on the reservation. My parents are both from South Dakota - my father from Eagle Butte, and my mother from Gettysburg.

I was born in Germany, and I grew up living there and in South Dakota. I now live in Portland, Oregon, with my 7-year-old son.

After I graduated from Smith College, a small liberal-arts women's college in Northampton, Massachusets, I moved to Portland and worked as an AmeriCorps volunteer in elementary schools. I was a teacher of young children for many years before I returned to school and studied a variety of subjects, including herbal medicine, consciousness, spirituality, divinity, and counseling. I have been working for the past 20 years as medicine person, educator, and storyteller in my community.

Thank you so much for your interest in our youth project, and for your ongoing support as we pursue our mission in the community.
