Dear Friends-

A spiritual giant (at least to me) Frederick Buechner died this week. Known as a ‘preacher’s preacher’, Buechner was an ordained Presbyterian minister who rarely attended church. His congregation, instead, consisted of the audience who read his novels, reflections and prayers.

I return to his writing because, at its heart, is a familiar refrain that our lives are Holy, if we just pay attention.

One of my favorite quotes from Buechner is found in ‘Whistling in the Dark’, a memoir he published many years ago. He says, ‘The Grace of God means something like: Here is your life. You might never have been but you are because the party wouldn’t have been complete without you. Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don’t be afraid. I am with you. Nothing can ever separate us. It’s for you I created the universe. I love you. There’s only one catch. Like any other gift, the gift of grace can be yours only if you reach out and take it. Maybe being able to reach out and take it is a gift too.’

While I mourn his passing, I know that Buechner is at home with God, whom he has loved and served for so long.

See you Sunday.

George

The PBS program Ethics and News Weekly did a great seven-minute review of his life and ministry that I’ve linked here: Link to PBS short on Buechner

PARISH NEWS

August Update from Strategic Planning Committee

Dear Parishioners:

            As reported in our June update, the Strategic Planning Committee, working together with our consultant Rev. Elise Brown of the Kairos Foundation, commenced a mission and visioning exercise at the beginning of this Summer with the goal of updating St. Peter’s mission statement and creating a set of “shared values.” It has been literally decades since St. Peter’s mission statement was created and many of the Committee members and Vestry members working on the project were hard pressed to remember what it said.  It was high time for a fresh look at St. Peter’s aspirations and goals and a critical first step toward creating a plan because the new mission statement and shared values will serve as the guide posts in the decision making yet to come.  Over the course of a number of brainstorming sessions, sub-group drafting sessions and a joint drafting session with the Vestry, the Committee drafted a new mission statement and a statement of shared values and the Vestry voted to adopt these statements at its August meeting.

The statements reflect the valuable information collected from parishioners through the surveys and interviews conducted by Rev. Brown, during the “Listening” phase of our strategic planning process.  In addition, the Committee attended a training session on creating effective mission and values statements, which was led by an expert from the Kairos Foundation.  It was difficult task to narrow the many special qualities that describe and define St. Peter’s and to articulate our diverse hopes and aspirations, but it is our genuine hope that you will see your own vision of St. Peter’s reflected within these statements.

Mission Statement

To build a welcoming, joyful community, transforming lives by serving God, one another, and those in need with love and acceptance.

Statement of Shared Values

At St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, we strive to live our faith through these shared values:

Love – Loving God and practicing kindness toward our neighbors and ourselves.

Inspiration – Offering engaging, uplifting, and thought-provoking worship and music.

Generosity – Sharing our gifts through service and giving.

Hospitality  – Welcoming all with genuine warmth and compassion.

Community – Forming a close-knit congregation where people of all ages and backgrounds connect and grow together in faith.

Tag Line (for external communications)

Welcoming all. Transforming lives. Growing together.

Next Steps

The Committee and Vestry are now focused on creating a plan to address what we have been referring to as our “Five Emerging Priorities,” which include plans to:

  • Grow and strengthen the Congregation;
  • Increase St. Peter’s visibility in Weston and surrounding community;
  • Position St. Peter’s as a Mission Center – An outreach station in Weston and the surrounding community;
  • Focus on children, youth and family ministries; and
  • Develop a realistic financial plan to reach a sustainable balanced budget that supports these priorities and St. Peter’s programs.

 In September, the Committee will meet again to review demographic data provided through the Joshua Group and to review draft financial models.  We look forward to updating the Parish again toward the end of September!  In the meantime, if you have questions regarding this report or the strategic planning process, please do not hesitate to reach out to Rev. George or any of the committee members.

Very Truly Yours,

The Strategic Planning Committee

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

Another Successful B-SAFE Week!

Thank you!

St. Peter’s and St. Elizabeth's BSAFE 2022 week is over and was a success!

Monday and Tuesday, our teams dropped the snacks at St. A & M, with Rev. George stepping in Monday as well as Becky Callow and Lynn Maruskin on Tuesday to make sure they were timely delivered. Of course, Bobby loading the BLOVE bags for delivery.

Friday’s field trip was great and quite a blast for the kids. God shined his love on us providing an exceptional day…great sunny weather though high temperatures that allowed for the youths to enjoy the water. The kids loved every minute of it and so did we.

The St Peter’s volunteering team was there in full force including the lovely Rev. Skip who blessed the gathering prior to lunch. William took some pictures to share with community.

Thank you for all your donations of snacks, finances, time and most of all your ministry to others. Thank you for the flexibility in allowing the BSAFE program changes take hold even though they left us void of the personal interaction with the youth and staff as we had in years past. Overall, I think this week went well indeed and thank you.

Happy safe summer everyone!!!

Sincerely,

Manty

Afghan Ministry "Camp Brookside" Update

Hard to believe we are more than halfway through the summer. The kids and adults are enjoying their Tuesday afternoon “Camp Brookside” get togethers. Thank you everyone for your contributions. A new family of 13 arrived last week and will be staying at one of the hotels until housing is found. A set of grandparents, two sets of adults (one pregnant) and 7 children. When we think back on how far we’ve come since early November when we started delivering meals to the 50+ refugees that had just arrived, it’s pretty remarkable. Families are all settled in apartments, Dad’s have jobs, many have their driver licenses and a few have even bought cars. A brother and sister who had been attending University in Kabul, are enrolled at Manchester Community College and we are trying to help them secure scholarships. Those that didn’t speak english are learning and the children enjoy school and making friends. As volunteers, we’ve learned so much and are grateful that these new arrivals have a welcoming community to help them assimilate. Our wish list items include AC’s, fans, rugs, vacuums, electric tea pots, children’s & teen clothing and shoes, Target, Savers & Joanne Fabric gift cards. And washing machines! These poor women do all their washing by hand in bathtubs. Laundromats are not an option, at least not yet. One woman (with 6 children) had a washer donated by a volunteer and now they all want one! Happy summer.

Home Communion and Prayer

church set up.jpg

Though many of St. Peter's parishioners have returned to worshiping and receiving Holy Communion in person inside our church building, we know it is not yet safe for all of us to do so. We will continue to live-stream our services so that we may include as many as possible in our offerings of praise and thanksgiving to God.

If it is not yet safe for you to worship with us in person, and you would like to receive Holy Communion and/or a share a time of prayer at your home, please contact the Parish Office.

If you would like to schedule a time during the week for private prayer in the church, please contact the church office.

St. Peter's is committed to continuing to make our worship space safe and welcoming to all. We hope to have you back with us in person as soon as doing so is the right choice for you.
