January 2020 library news
2020 --- sounds so futuristic, doesn't it? So what's in your library's future? We've added a few things recently and are working on some more that we think you'll like.

  • Get text notifications about your library materials: We can now send you text messages when your holds are ready and when you have items due soon. You can even renew library materials by text! Ask us about setting your account up for text messages, or set it up yourself by logging in with your library card number and clicking "Modify Personal Info."
  • Coming soon: we'll also be offering the option to get an emailed receipt for your library materials instead of a printed receipt.
  • Check out our new "Lucky Day" collection of popular movies. These are extra copies of our most popular items that can't be placed on hold; they come and go quickly so you never know what will be here. Stop in and see what's on the shelf - it might be your "Lucky Day!"
  • We're working on adding new furniture and reorganizing the front of the library this month and into February. Watch our Facebook page for pics of the new things when they're available.

OK, so we're not the Jetsons here, but we are making small changes to improve your library experience all the time. Stop in and see what's new, and let us know -- have you seen a good idea for a library program or service? We are always on the lookout for new ideas.

See you at the library!

4-H Tech Changemakers

Have you ever looked at your technology and thought, “It sure would be nice to have someone help me with this!” “Is it safe to do my shopping online?” “What’s the difference between an iPhone and an Android?” Then you’re in luck! The 4-H Tech Changemakers are youth from around Iron County who are eager to help you with your technology questions. We bring the coffee and snacks and you bring the questions.

A group of Mercer students will be leading three technology sessions at the Mercer Library this month. Join them on Wednesdays, January 8, 15, and 22 at 1:00 p.m. for a 30-minute teaching session followed by time for questions.

The first session on January 8 will cover phone setup, online safety, passwords, and social media.

The program is free, sponsored by 4-H and the Iron County UW-Extension. Please register in advance by calling Neil at 715-561-2695.
Iron County Business Mentoring

Going into business or have business questions? Talk to advisors from local experienced businesses to get some help. The Iron County Development Zone sponsors a Business Mentorship Program to help those in business or thinking about starting a business get support, coaching, motivation, and encouragement.

The next meeting is this Thursday, January 9 at 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Liberty Way Tap House in Mercer. A mentor or mentors will be available for you to stop by and visit with at no cost. Pizza will be provided and if you want you can purchase some of the craft beers on tap.

The program is provided by the Iron County Development Zone. For more information, contact Kelly Klein at 715-561-2922.
Book Club news

Tomorrow (Tuesday 1/7) is book club day!

At 1:00 p.m., the book club will meet to discuss Blue Heaven by C.J. Box, author of the popular Joe Pickett crime novels. At 6:00 p.m., our evening book club is discussing The First Conspiracy: the secret plot to kill George Washington by Brad Meltzer, the true story of the conspiracy that led to the development of America's counterintelligence services.

Next month, our clubs are reading The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah and Jimi Hendrix Turns Eighty by Tim Sandlin. Copies of both are now available at the library. New members are always welcome in either group!
Movie Night

All are welcome to a free movie night on Tuesday, January 14th at 6:00 p.m. We'll be showing "Judy," rated PG-13, 118 minutes. Renee Zellweger just won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Judy Garland in this popular biopic. Join us for a free screening, and we'll provide the popcorn!
Grown-Up Story Hour

Our next Grown-up Story Hour has not been scheduled yet, so stay tuned to our events calendar or Facebook page for updates. We'll be back at the Liberty Way Tap House in their newly-remodeled back room. As always, there's no charge to attend, but beverages from Liberty Way and pizza from Home Slice will be available for purchase.

If you're interested in reading a short (5-15 minutes) piece of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, email Teresa at [email protected] . We're always looking for new readers, and we promise that it's a friendly crowd!
