Sci-ROI initiative
Dear Members,

As promised, we have now uploaded the video webinar recordings and questions-answers for all the 7 sessions from our Annual Event Sci-ROI 2020 held in last September. You can now visit our webpage and access to those immensely useful and informative videos on career transition for Indian STEM Professionals staying abroad. Learn from the invited expert panels from eminent Indian Institutes deliberating on a series of career related topics ranging from funding opportunities, new faculty perspective, academic and industrial hiring, non-traditional careers and entrepreneurship.
Sci-ROI has been actively engaged with the STIP secretariat, DST to ensure that the voices and concerns of the Indian diaspora is deliberated in the formulation of India's 5th National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (STIP).

Sci-ROI also took part in the STIP Consultation event held on Nov 7th 2020, highlighting the challenges faced by young professionals after transitioning to India. Now, as the policy draft is out for public consultation, we hope your critical comments and recommendations will further make this policy a stronger one and will positively influence the growth of Indian science in future.
You can direct your suggestions, inputs and comments on the draft latest by 25th January, 2021 at email: india.stip@gmail.com

Volunteer's Corner
NEELADRI
I have been a Post-doctoral fellow in National Institutes of Health, Maryland and am about to join Emory University, Atlanta, as an Associate Scientist (Senior). I was a participant in Sci-ROI 2018 Annual meeting, Chicago and there I could interact with Prof. Ansari and the Sci-ROI team members. I got really interested in volunteering for next year’s events. From there being a part of this team has been an enriching experience for me. Our team members were from different universities all over USA and most of us have not seen each other in person before the annual meeting in 2019. In 2020 it is even more amazing because I haven’t met in person with some of our members till now as our 2020 event was virtual. But in spite of that, it all feels like a family. Sometimes I wonder how working for Sci-ROI made us such good friends, stand by each other even without knowing each other in person.

During these years, I have seen how Sci-ROI has grown in different dimensions- thanks to our enthusiastic team members. In 2018, I saw it was like a Young Investigator meeting where the Post-docs and Graduates can showcase their research to the directors and funding agencies from India. One additional aspect of Sci-ROI meeting is that it gives an almost equal importance to the industry and entrepreneurship sectors and got some great speakers from those field as well. In 2019, I saw, in addition to the talks and presentations, a great emphasis was given by Sci-ROI on in person interviews by the different Institutes in the Annual meeting. These led to many of the interested participants towards getting an offer for faculty positions in premier Indian Institutes. In 2020, the situation was tough – in person meeting was not possible. But our team turned this problem into an opportunity while going virtual. With the travelling barrier being removed, the 2020 meeting had more participants than ever before from all over the USA, Europe, India and other countries. The interview session with the institutes this time was held at an even larger scale and held a month after the Annual meeting. From 2020, apart from the Annual meeting, now there is an active job portal in the Sci-ROI website and newsletter and blogs are coming out periodically. It has been a great experience for me being part of this team for the last two years, interacting with some great enthusiastic minds and seeing Sci-ROI growing. My best wishes for Sci-ROI and all in our Sci-ROI family !!!

The recent lawsuit filed in the Delhi High Court by the publishers Elsevier, Wiley, and American Chemical Society against Sci-hub and LibGen for copyright infringement against the India's initiative towards ‘one nation, one subscription’ with scholarly publishers for access to paywalled research for the citizens has brought out the debate between legality and ethicality of limiting access to knowledge. Listen to the eminent scientists steering this discussion while addressing key concerns.
