A Reconciling in Christ synod
Updated recommendations for navigating the next chapter in our pandemic landscape
Beloved in Christ in the Rocky Mountain Synod,

We have entered a new phase of pandemic church life – a phase that is at once hopeful and highly complicated. The hope comes from current efforts to vaccinate as much of the population as possible, which should eventually inhibit the ability of the virus to spread quickly and minimize risk of contracting COVID-19. The complexity comes from a combination of factors including:

1) the emergence of variant strains of COVID which are shown to spread the virus more easily and might prove more deadly;

2) uncertainty about how best to navigate in-person gatherings for communities in which not everyone is vaccinated;

3) the impact of growing pandemic fatigue leading to non-compliance with protocols that keep the virus from spreading;

4) the many unknowns that still remain about the virus itself as well as uncertainty about the long-term impacts of vaccinations.

The following recommendations do not pretend to cover all the issues facing our synod’s congregations and members with respect to this next phase of the pandemic. The CDC, local public health officials, and credentialed epidemiologists such as Dr Michael Osterholm remain your best source of information and guidance with respect to the science of the pandemic. The goal of these recommendations is to offer some broad, common sense guidance for congregations and rostered ministers alike as we seek to navigate the coming months together.

Given the information currently available, it seems reasonable to assume that the rate of transmission of COVID-19 will continue to diminish over time as more people are vaccinated and if we continue to observe protocols related to public safety during a pandemic in the face of new variants. It is important to keep in mind, however, that while current trends of transmission have already decreased in most places since the end of last year, current rates are still generally much higher than they were during much of last spring, summer and early fall. Decreasing rates can give us a false sense of security if we are not looking at the full picture. Perspective matters and caution must be advised. Contracting COVID-19 at any time always carries the risk of serious illness, hospitalization or death.

Updates from ELCA Global Mission and Young Adults in Global Mission
Young Adults in Global Mission- A sad but wise decision announced- “After much consideration and thought, we have decided to cancel our 2021-2022 year of service for the Young Adults in Global Mission program. We will not be sending volunteers into service this year, resulting in two years in a row with no active volunteers.”

  • Communications consultant in Kenya.
  • ESL teachers in Japan.

Cultural Architecture: A Path to Creating Vitalized Congregations
Congratulations to Pastor Doug Hill, Abiding Hope, Littleton CO on the release of his new book from Fortress Press, titled Cultural Architecture: A Path to Creating Vitalized Congregations.

"...shifts the conversation about congregational vitality squarely onto cultural development... and serves to assist pastors and leaders as they guide their congregations through the painstaking and intensive process of redevelopment. It provides hands-on tools to guide congregational leaders in creating vision, core values, and strategic plans..."

Prayer of the Day
O God, by the passion of your blessed Son you made an instrument of shameful death to be for us the means of life. Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

“What Do We Know About Suicide and How Does it Help?"
Thursday, February 25, 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Researchers have learned a lot about the psychology of suicide in the past 20 years, but much of this information is still not widely known. A better understanding of what Edwin Shniedman called "the suicidal mind" makes helpers more effective. We're better able to assess risk and thus to provide the aid most appropriate to the situation. Will do a brief review of recent research and then connect what the research tells us to "best practice" interventions like safety planning and restricting access to lethal means.

Jay Winstead, a licensed clinical social worker at Mental Health Partners, was part of the MHP crisis intervention team, where he worked with hundreds of people having suicidal thoughts. He is a trainer and suicide prevention project lead at MHP.

Our Life Together
Caring for Creation During Lent
Here we are in Lent. Have you considered what you might do for creation during this season? Fasting has long been a part of Lent as a reminder that we are the created and not the creator. As we feel hunger or desire for something that we have put away for 40 days, we are reminded that we need a Savior, because we are just dust and to dust we shall return.

This year, as you contemplate being dust, consider all of creation, which is also made of dust. Consider Jesus who took dust on for us. Consider the animals hanging out with Jesus in the wilderness for 40 days after his baptism. All of us are made of the same stuff, and God took on that stuff for our benefit. Knowing that God became part of creation (the infinite became finite in Jesus), how might we treat creation with the same reverence God gives it?

Here are some things to consider.

  • During COVID, we’ve gotten used to not driving. How might you even further reduce your carbon footprint? What might you set aside during Lent?
  • Plastic is plugging up the oceans. If we keep going as we are, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish! How can you cut down on your use of plastic?
  • As you take walks for fresh air, help the earth out by picking up trash as you go along. You can even make a game of it with your family. The person who picks up the most trash “wins,” but really we all win.
  • Where are people most impacted by pollution in your area? You can write letters to your law makers to advocate for change. That’s part of our Baptismal covenant to seek justice and peace in the world.

If you have other ideas, join us on the Rocky Mountain Synod Creation Care FaceBook page and post your ideas - https://www.facebook.com/groups/153008509368206 - or email them to rmscreationcareteam@gmail.com

Youth Gathering COVID-19 Update & FAQs
Gathering leadership continues to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and how it may impact the 2022 ELCA Youth Gathering, the Multicultural Youth Leadership Event (MYLE) and the tAble.

Many of those impacts remain unknown this far in advance of the event dates. We plan to provide an update on the Gathering’s viability later this summer (before registration opens) and again in late November or early December. We will continue sharing updates through Gathering communication as we learn more about the projected state of the virus in July 2022. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through these details with an ever-changing virus.
