BIG NIGHT
dir. Campbell Scott and Stanley Tucci, 1996
BIG NIGHT reminds us of the richness, strength, and diversity that immigrants have brought to our nation and the contributions they've made to how and what we eat. This film, about two immigrant brothers pursuing the American dream with their Italian restaurant in New Jersey, touches on food, fallibility, family, and fraternity. It's a film of great acting, music, and sets that cooks with a comedic touch.

Noelle Serafino, Marketing & Communications Coordinator, recommends:
EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT
dir. Ciro Geurra, 2015
EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT is a hauntingly beautiful, deeply immersive film from director Ciro Guerra. I remember seeing it at Amherst Cinema when it first opened and it has stayed with me ever since. Shot in stunning black and white, EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT chronicles the horrors of colonialism and industrialization perpetrated in the Amazonian jungle in the 19th and 20th centuries as viewed through the eyes of an indigenous shaman. It also speaks to the beauty, magic, and power of nature, urging us to listen to and respect the natural world.

EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT played as part of Amherst Cinema's Science on Screen Series in 2016, with Dr. Chris Dole, medical anthropologist at Amherst College, as our guest speaker. Click here to watch Dr. Dole's discussion of anthropologists' efforts to explain the therapeutic powers of the shaman.
