Craig Felton
2019 CTGCSA President
With 2019 almost in the record books, I wanted to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to our Affiliate Members and Annual Sponsors who make this Association what it is. Without their support, CTGCSA could not continue to grow and prosper as we have done over the last 8-10 years. Their unsurpassed support allows us the freedom to strive and continue to improve all aspects of our Association.
2019 was an exciting year for the Association. By popular demand we brought back the Membership Directory which was last produced nearly 10 years ago. In addition, The Founders Cup was introduced as a season long two man team event that gained momentum and will be back next spring. We added education at two more chapter meetings (McClure Match Play & Chapter Championship) bringing the total to four education opportunities every year for our membership. CTGCSA wrote a $3,000 check to the Wounded Warriors Project with the help of Brigg's Ranch donating golf at the Toy Drive. We took over 125 new Toys to the Methodist Children's Hospital in San Antonio and gave out $9,000 in Scholarships to the children of CTGCSA. $25.00 gift cards are given to the entire golf course maintenance staff at every meeting venue thanking them for their hard work.
We started serving coffee, juice and breakfast tacos at several Chapter meetings.
The list goes on but the important thing to remember is that your CTGCSA is financially healthy and running on all cylinders. Your Board of Directors are here to serve you and we are eager to continue growing and improving every aspect of our association. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us with concerns or ideas that could help us better serve you.
Regard's
Craig Felton

The great 2019 event season wrapped up in December at a familiar site. Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle has hosted the chapter many years and we enjoyed meeting in their newly renovated conference area. We had great attendance for a terrific education lineup that earned participants Continuing Education points from the TDA and GCSAA. Our education line included Dr. Jeff Higgins, Dr. Derek Settle, Travis Klosterboer, and Dr. Don Renchie. Thanks to all who provided very interesting and useful information. Johnny Walker of the GCSAA attended the event and reported the great results of the Rounds for Research auction managed by the Lone Star GCSA.
Thanks again to all who participated and provided education for this great event. And a SPECIAL THANK YOU to our event Title Sponsor:

Briggs Ranch Golf Club hosted our Annual Toy Drive and rolled out the red carpet for this special event in November. Our special sponsors for the day were Harrell's who was our Lunch and Awards Sponsor and Austin Turf and Tractor who sponsored Prize Money. These two sponsors have been supportive of the association for many years and we appreciate their generosity.
Thanks to the sponsors, attendees and our great hosts, the chapter was able to make a $3,000 donation to the Wounded Warrior fund and to deliver 125 new toys to the Methodist Children's Hospital in San Antonio. Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of our country's heroes and special children at a special time of year!
In October, the Northern Hills Golf Course hosted one of the most special events of the year for the chapter. The 2019 Crew Appreciation Championship was held at this course that is part of the historic Alamo City Golf Trail. We had a very good turnout and a fun time was had by all.
Thank you to PMTS, Bayer, and BWI who sponsored the event and made it a great day!
If you have never sent your staff to this event, it is a really great way to show your appreciation for all of their great work during the year. Several Superintendents play with their staff making it a great way to show appreciation and for team building. We look forward to bigger and better participation for the 2020 event!

Hot Dogs and Fire Ants
Central Texas Update
John Daniels, USGA Agronomist
Fire ants are a formidable pest that can inflict severe pain on unsuspecting individuals. Just ask anyone who has been unfortunate enough to get repeatedly stung by a swarm of this invasive species. Fire ants are found throughout the southern states and inhabit a variety of landscapes, including golf courses - which offer a favorable environment for them with the moist soil and low-cut turf. In fact, fire ants are so common on golf courses that they are mentioned in the Rules of Golf as a dangerous animal condition (
Rule 16.2
). The medical threat of stings, and the unsightly mounds they create, makes controlling fire ants a high priority for any golf course superintendent.

Austin Country Club
2020 WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Agronomy Volunteer Registration is now OPEN.
The 2020 tournament is just around the corner. The dates are March
23rd - 29th. Over the last 4 years we have had great local support from around the area and we are looking for that to continue. The week is filled with a lot of fellowship, phenomenal golf, a little knowledge from a "behind the scenes" point of view, and a little bit of hard work. Without our volunteers we just would not be as successful in pulling this event off. I hope that all of you can look at your calendars and see if this event will fit into your schedule or maybe someone on your staff. We usually take between 30-40 volunteers so there is room for everyone who is interested. You will be fed, clothed, given tickets for the week, and housing is available if you are from out of town. The link to the registration form is below so please sign up if you are interested. It's truly a great week. Registration Closes February 21st. Thanks for your time and I look forward to seeing you all here in March.
Sincerely,
Bobby Stringer, CGCS

GCSAA seeking 177 additional Grassroots Ambassadors by the end of 2020
Lawrence, Kan. The Golf Course Superintendents Association of American (GCSAA) is looking to recruit 177 Grassroots Ambassadors by the end of 2020 to join the 358 ambassadors currently serving in their volunteer advocacy roles.
The GCSAA Grassroots Ambassador program matches a member of GCSAA with each member of Congress to build strong relationships between them. Once this goal has been met, all 535 members of Congress will have been paired with a GCSAA member serving as their "go-to" resource for golf course management issues.
