We are so happy for Willie, who was recently housed! Willie had been homeless for about five years when he learned about BEDS amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He was sheltered temporarily in an area motel after calling the crisis line for help. Known for his big smile, Willie could hardly contain his excitement when he moved into his new apartment that came stocked with essentials such as furniture, dishes, cookware, cleaning supplies and more. "He's extremely grateful," said caseworker Jim Gilbert. "What he loves about BEDS is how responsive we were."
BEDS Bulletin! The stimulus packaged signed into law last month includes $25 billion for renters who are struggling amid the health and economic crisis caused by COVID-19. The national ban on evictions was extended through January as well. "While this is a critical start, these provisions will not end the eviction crisis and will not help all renters who desperately need rental assistance to protect their families from harm," said Emily Benfer, a visiting law professor at Wake Forest University.
Congratulations to Director of Supportive Housing Javon Harris and Street Outreach team member Zac Catrambone, who received a certificate of appreciation on behalf of BEDS Plus from the Illinois Department of Human Services. BEDS was recognized for its work on the 2020 Census. Javon and Zac helped get the word out, coordinate efforts and increase the amount of people who participated in the census count!
Soup's on Sunday! Mmm, mmm, delicious! We will share a new soup recipe every Sunday until our virtual Soup & Bread Event on Jan. 31. This week, we are featuring Taste of Home magazine's Rustic Italian Tortellini Soup, a favorite of long-time BEDS supporter and volunteer Shawn Erickson from Erickson Plumbing. Shawn has been a BEDS volunteer for many years and has provided many meals as well as shelf stable items during the COVID-19 pandemic. Erickson Plumbing is our Soup & Bread Spoon Sponsor.
