An Update About CRI Courses and a Special Offer for Online Learning.
Everyone at CRI shares in your concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. We recognize the challenges this places on veterinary practices, PT practices, teaching hospitals, and the pet-owning public. We are following the CDC updates and making changes to our scheduled courses accordingly.
At this time, we have canceled all live courses through May 31 and are working with our CCRT and CCRVN registrants to reschedule them into later modules. We will begin to reschedule our continuing education courses as soon as we have a clearer picture of the anticipated progress of the pandemic.
In the meantime, we encourage you to continue your education through online learning opportunities, including our Online CE Course Subscription as well as our Introduction to Veterinary Clinical Research course that will begin in late May.
To help facilitate online learning, we are offering our annual Online CE Course Subscription for $625 (a 20% savings) through April 3rd. This annual subscription provides 58 hours of RACE-approved credit, accessible from your home or office. We are continuing to add new content to the subscription, with Sports Medicine modules being added monthly starting April 1st. Please read more
below and register by April 3, 2020, to receive the discounted price.

An Update on CRI Internships.
In light of the current social distancing policies, we want all of our current CCRT- and CCRVN-internship candidates and intern mentors to know that you should wait until all social distancing policies have been lifted before planning to schedule any internship. CRI is extending indefinitely our graduates' eligibility to complete an internship. Those who have internships currently scheduled should contact their mentor sites to confirm plans to defer internships to later dates.

Note: We have postponed our March Business of Canine Rehabilitation course. We will provide an update when we have set new dates.
Thinking about opening your own practice? Could the management of your current practice be improved?
The Business of Canine Rehabilitation is for
veterinarians, physical therapists, practice managers, veterinary nurses ...
anyone wanting to know how to open, manage, and improve the bottom line for a canine rehabilitation practice.
The teaching team will include a veterinarian and two physical therapists who have all run busy, successful rehabilitation practices. Interactive discussions will give you plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
Do you have a business plan? What about staffing requirements? Equipping your practice? Marketing? Are you thinking about transitioning from general practice to rehabilitation/integrative practice? This class is your opportunity to learn how to incorporate rehabilitation into your practice in a way that benefits your clients - and your bottom line!
This course sold out the last time it was offered, so plan to take this class!
"This course was excellent. I am a business owner DVM looking to start a separate rehabilitation practice in conjunction with our general practice. I brought my business partner/hospital manager who has no rehabilitation experience. She also found the course excellent, particularly how the business perspective associated with the various permutations of a rehabilitation practice was presented."
- Erin True, DVM, Elk Grove, California
"All the instructors were really great! I loved that each came from a different background, with different practice styles, and from different parts of the country."
- Sofia Brickman, DVM, CCRT, cVMA, Los Angeles, California
"This class was excellent and gave me the tools I need to start my new rehabilitation practice, as well as practical steps I will be able to take as soon as I get home."
- Jennifer Bouthilet, DVM, MBA, CCRT, CVAT, Stillwater, Minnesota

Attention, physical therapists and PT students! You can now register for CRI courses during your final year in PT school and start your certification as a canine rehabilitation therapist as soon as you have graduated and are licensed! We will NO LONGER require that you graduate before registering for courses. This will allow you to achieve your dream of working with animals much sooner!

Veterinary Students: Have You Heard About the Changes to Our Rehabilitation and Acupuncture Certification Programs?
We know that veterinary students that graduate with certifications in veterinary rehabilitation and/or acupuncture have more to offer a potential employer. But finances and school schedules can make this additional training very challenging. With this in mind, CRI has made adjustments to our rehabilitation and acupuncture certification programs just for veterinary students.
Certification in Canine Rehabilitation (CCRT): Students can start their training by taking
Introduction to Canine Rehabilitation any time after their first year. They can then take the second module,
Clinical Skills, any time after their second year. After their third year, they can take the last module,
Clinical Applications, followed by a 40-hour
internship. Certification will be awarded when the students obtain their veterinary licenses.
Certification in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture (CVAT): Students can start their training by taking
Introduction to Veterinary Medical Acupuncture any time after their first year. They can then take the second module,
Veterinary Medical Acupuncture for Sports Medicine/Rehabilitation Patients any time after their second year, and the last module,
Canine and Feline Medical Acupuncture, any time after their third year. Certification will be awarded when the students obtain their veterinary licenses.
We encourage veterinary students to take advantage of the 20% discount off the tuition we are currently offering. We are also in discussions with our sponsor companies to develop tuition assistance programs.
For complete details, please see our
Veterinary Student Certification page or contact us at
info@caninerehabinstitute.com.

During this challenging time when many people are facing temporary unemployment, it is even more important to be generous and help us support those in need.
Dr. Janet Van Dyke, CRI's founder and CEO, made the first donation to launch The Tayla Fund.
To make a tax-deductible donation, use the button below to donate to Coral Springs Animal Hospital's charitable fund through the Veterinary Care Charitable Fund. Congratulations to Bean, Our Breezie Demo Dog of the Month!
Our March Breezie Demo Dog Award Winner is Bean, the beloved companion of Dr. Angelikie Zafiris, an emergency/critical care veterinarian at Coral Springs Animal Hospital.
Dr. Zafiris describes Bean as a "wacky" female spayed greyhound who is approximately 9 years old. Bean was originally obtained by a local emergency facility after sustaining a track-related injury (tarsal fracture). At that time, her fracture was repaired, and she very willingly enrolled in a blood donor program, saving the lives of the many anemic puppies of the world. After two years of being a blood donor, she was adopted by her current mommy and has been living "the life" ever since.
"Bean is a goofy, free spirited, love machine that is like no other greyhound known to man," Dr. Zafiris adds. "She enjoys long runs on the beach and submersing herself in water; although folks, don't let her fool you, she will sink like a log. She loves to wear pajamas in the cold weather and is most notably known for her short wiggly tail, long tongue and silly personality. Bean is overwhelmingly loved by all the amazing nurses at CSAH and was recently gifted the most fitting collar; covered with hearts, rainbows and unicorn guinea pigs by Theresa (one of the night nurses)."
CRI faculty member Kara Amstutz, DVM, CCRT, CVPP, CVA, explains why Bean was chosen for the Breezie Demo Dog Award: "Bean was a superstar the last two courses I have worked with her. Everyone in the hospital knows her too - as you walk her out to potty or to class, the employees passing by exclaim "Bean!" similar to the show "Cheers" with "Norm!" She is super patient with the students and allows for easy palpation. She is just a sweet and gentle girl. Love her."
In recognition of this honor, Bean will receive a gift bag from
Jiminy's valued at $50. Congratulations, Bean!
|
The Breezie Demo Dog of the Month Award is given in memory of Breezie, who was the lead demo dog for our Coral Springs courses for more than 9 years and helped to educate more than 800 veterinary and physical therapy professionals. She was such a great demo dog that our faculty would beg to have her in their small group sessions. Breezie's favorite holiday was Halloween when she was always the best dressed dog in Coral Springs! |

OrthoPets Case Study: Finn
We've asked our colleagues at OrthoPets to share case studies with us as a way of providing more education about orthotics and prosthetics.
Finn is a 4-year-old male border collie who was presented to Avondale Veterinary Healthcare in Iowa in September 2019 for radial nerve paralysis of his left thoracic limb after jumping out of a car window 6 months prior. On the physical exam, his carpal extension was 150 degrees and flexion was 33 degrees. He had muscle atrophy of this triceps, biceps, and trapezoids, and good control of his elbow. He also had a wound on the dorsum of his paw due to dragging the limb.
The original plan for Finn was to try to utilize a carpal orthotic (dog wrist brace) to slowly gain extension of the carpus. When OrthoPets received the case and media, they had concerns about the triceps function and the possibility of gaining extension due to the length of the injury. The owners elected to visit the OrthoPets team at Colorado State University to verify.
The evaluation by Martin Kaufmann and the team at CSU determined that Finn had impressive triceps control and would benefit from an accommodative-style hybrid orthotic/prosthetic to return his extension to the ground in a normal alignment.
Finn returned to Dr. Christie Carlo's care in Iowa and was fitted with the hybrid device. He took to it right away and is regularly attending rehabilitation to gain better elbow extension. His paw wound has healed as well. Finn's quality of life is now back to normal. He is very active and enjoys chasing the ball in the device!
