Rector's Ramblings

I hope that we all continue in our prayers this week as we process and try to move forward after last week's distressing events. I addressed the Capital attack head on in my sermon on Sunday because it represents such a dramatic and powerful moment for all of us; it was on the lips and minds and in the prayers of everyone I spoke to after it happened last week. I didn't really have a choice but to address it.

The preacher's role is a combination of that of comforter, motivator, and prophet, among other things. What happens in our democracy is not directly related to the Church, and yet our faith is what informs our citizenship and our behaviors, and we surround ourselves, our leaders, and our nation in prayer during such times. "The Church" does have a voice to add to national conversations, and so I have added to our context it as the Spirit led me.

Formation

Men's Study Group
The Men's Study Group, which meets on Wednesday mornings, at 10:30 am, via ZOOM, is beginning a new book for the new year. They will be reading, The American Story, Conversations with Master Historians, by David Rubinstein.

Amazon Review: Co-founder of The Carlyle Group and patriotic philanthropist David M. Rubenstein takes readers on a sweeping journey across the grand arc of the American story through revealing conversations with our greatest historians. In these lively dialogues, the biggest names in American history explore the subjects they've come to so intimately know and understand.

If you are interested in joining the group, Please contact Bill Abbate at [email protected] to get ZOOM sign-in information.
Women's Book Study
The Women's Book Group will start back up on Thursdays, January 14th at 1:00 pm. Our discussions will take place via Zoom. We will be reading Take This Bread by Sara Miles.

Take this Bread is a journey of person's faith and the impact of the Sacramental Faith. If you would like to be a part of this group discussion or have any questions, please contact Mother Ashton at [email protected].
Episcopal Church 101
Episcopal Church 101 (EC 101) is an eight week class for those interested in joining the Episcopal Church or for those who simply want to learn more about our practices and beliefs. The series is a great refresher, too, for those who are already Episcopalians but may have forgotten why we do some of the things we do. We take a look at church history, theology, liturgy, mission, and go behind the scenes at Christ Church to see how Sunday worship comes together. Classes will take place via Zoom on Thursdays evenings at 5:30 beginning February 11. If you would like to join this group, please contact Mtr. Becky at [email protected] or call the church office at 912-638-8683.
Devotionals
If you are a regular reader of the Forward Day by Day devotionals that are typically available in the Christ Church office and would like to continue to have access to them, please contact Glenn Queener at [email protected]. Glenn would like to have your name and street address, so he can send you copies of the booklets. You can also find the devotionals online here.
Adult Sunday Class Continues Break
The Adult Sunday Class, led by the Rev. Bob Brown continues to be on hiatus. For questions about the class and future studies, please contact Bob at [email protected].
 Children and Youth

Kidurgy
Mother Katie continues to record weekly Kidurgy lessons for our children which you may watch on Sunday mornings with your children online, or whenever it's convenient during the week. See last Sunday's spirit-lifting Epiphany lesson HERE

Confirmation Class for Age 16 and Up
This spring we would have offered a Confirmation Class under normal circumstances. If you are 16 or older and are interested in becoming an individual member of the church, by making a statement of faith in front of the whole church, please contact Mother Katie at [email protected] by February 1, so that we can make a confirmation class schedule that will accommodate you.

We're Spicing Up Souper Sunday This Year!
This year our youth will be combining their traditional Souper Sunday fundraiser with the Annual Chili Cookoff, to take place on the Sunday of the Christ Church Annual Meeting.

On the morning of January 31, they will be selling pints and quarts of soup/chili, and corn bread and cinnamon rolls. All funds raised will go towards a youth group trip that they will go on as soon as this pandemic is over (ex: if this summer, an amusement park; if over in winter, their ski trip.)

Please consider signing up to make a few pints/quarts of chili or soup, or making corn bread or cinnamon rolls to donate. You may sign up HERE. All donations will be mostly gratefully appreciated! If you have questions, please contact Mtr. Katie at [email protected].

Backpack Buddies Fired Up to Keep Local Children Fed During the Chilly Months Ahead

The Backpack Buddies are keeping the heat on as they continue to pack record quantities of food for the children of Glynn County. Our teachers know that well-nourished children have a much greater chance of succeeding in school, than youngsters who are listless and hungry, and the Backpack Buddies team wants to make sure that each and every child has the best opportunity to learn that they can.

We cannot thank our supporters at Christ Church enough for your steadfast support of this essential feeding program. Your partnership keeps the Backpack Buddies alive and growing, and allows us to meet the needs that have continued to expand during the pandemic. This month alone, we're adding 22 more children to our group at Burroughs Molette and are awaiting word from additional schools about other children who may need help.

If you've thought about adopting a young buddy, or have had one in the past, this is a great time to think about doing it for the new year. A sponsorship for a child is $100, which will supply the youngster with weekend food bags for the entire school year. You  are welcome to donate online HERE, (choose Backpack Program from the drop-down menu), or by check (just mail it to Christ Church, at 6329 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 - check memo, Backpack Buddies). If you have any questions about the Backpack Buddies program, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].

Helping Our Friends at St. Athanasius

If you'd like to help with food donations, our friends at the St. Athanasius Feed My Sheep food ministry would be happy to get some always-needed staples for the new year including:

*  Canned diced tomatoes
*  Canned corn
*  Canned fruit
*  Full-sized boxes of cereal

You may drop off these items at the Christ Church Parish House Tuesday-Thursday, 9 am-5 pm, or Friday, 9 am-2 pm. As always, thank you for your generosity!

The Christ Church Door Ministry
The Christ Church Door Ministry has continued to assist needy Glynn County residents with emergency funds for utility bills throughout the COVID pandemic. Families needing help during the last few months were interviewed via telephone, instead of in person, to adhere to COVID safety guidelines. Power and water bills were paid directly to the utility suppliers from Door Ministry funds. This year, we have paid over $13,000 to help our neighbors who have found themselves in emergency circumstances.

If you would like to contribute to the Door Ministry, you may make your check to Christ Church, Frederica, with Door Ministry in the memo line. Checks may also be dropped off at the church office during our normal business hours, Tuesday-Friday, or mailed to Christ Church, Frederica 6329  Frederica Road  St. Simons Island, GA 31522.
Thank You From Christ Church Parishioner Waverley Brown
I would like to thank everyone for your help on my service project. I was able to get down to the Camden County Humane Society to deliver three full boxes of goodies for all the animals in their care. I wouldn't have been able to do this without your help. The volunteers at the Humane Society were so happy with my donations. It makes me even happier to know that I have a great community to help me when I need them. Thank you so much for everything you've done.

Waverley Brown
