A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Although tracking your reading by minutes or pages in our BeanStack program started in June, summer programming really starts in July. Please check out our jam-packed calendar of events online -- many programs are highlighted below. Instead of Food for Fines, we are accepting Pet Food and Pet Supply donations in July and August -- and are still fine-free!

I am most excited about a volunteer opportunity on selected Wed evenings this summer: we need help weeding our gardens, and pizza will be provided. Sign up on our Library Event Calendar.

In June, we bid goodbye to retirees Donna Bates-Tarrant who worked at GPL in the Children’s Room and then Technical Services, totaling 22 years, and Susan Leto, who worked for 19 years in Circulation. Susan will return to volunteer and temp after a vacation, and you’ll likely see Donna return at Mystery Book Group! We wish them well and will miss them! Interviews are underway for replacements for their BIG shoes to fill!

I began tallying statistics for the year for required reporting to MBLC - through May, we had 40,000 visitors and circulated 69,000 items, significant increases from last year when we were closed for more than half the year.

The beginning of the new fiscal year comes with gifts -- new databases funded by the MA Board of Library Commissioners! We'll have our local links up after the holidays, but you can get a sneak peek at https://galepages.com/mlin_c_graftpl. We had some end-of-year book, digital, and media purchases, including a photo therapy lamp, mindfulness and therapy based card decks, and a Zen garden kit to circulate.

Have a safe, happy and meaningful Independence Day celebration - the Library will be CLOSED in observance of the holiday on Monday July 5 and reopen at 10am on Tuesday July 6. No items are due, so feel free to hold items through Tuesday (the AMH -- materials return -- was experiencing some issues on Thu and Fri and may be down this weekend).

EXPANSION UPDATE
Happy Birthday to US! Our substantial completion date was July 1, 2021. We are finishing up on donor signage. Library hours and other signage was installing this week. Our green roof is in bloom with purple, yellow and white flowers! HVAC work continues. Shelving tops were installed several spaces, a full year after we'd been expecting them. Rain gutters were installed on two north-facing doors after water came into the teen room following heavy rain.

We are working to resolve other outstanding non-punch list items, including signage, office shelving, locks for cabinets and drawers in public spaces, landscaping, wiring, piano, patio furniture and lighting, and FF&E installations.

Check out construction photos in our Construction album on our Facebook Page!

PET FOOD DRIVE
In honor of our Toto the Tornado Kitten visit, and to help promote our Animal Adventures Cultural Council grant program, we will be collecting pet food and supplies for the Grafton Food Bank in July and August. We will place the collection bin in the Lobby on the tiered display (where we collected PJ's this winter) and CR staff will manage overflow.

Dry cat food and canned dog food are currently needed for distribution, but all new/unopened and non expired food, treats, toys, and supplies will be accepted.
PATRIOTIC FICTION
Drums Along the Mohawk by Walter D. Edmonds

This is the story of the forgotten pioneers of the Mohawk Valley during the Revolutionary War. Here Gilbert Martin and his young wife struggled and lived and hoped. Combating hardships almost too great to endure, they helped give to America a legend that still stirs the heart. In the midst of love and hate, life and death, danger and disaster, they stuck to the acres that were theirs and fought a war without ever quite understanding it. ~ GoodReads

Garden in the Woods
A Botanic Garden Like No Other
Discover the beauty of native plants in a naturally dramatic landscape.
In a unique botanic garden visitors often describe as magical, you’ll find a naturalistic plant collection that showcases New England native plants with complementary specimens from across the country. Garden in the Woods lies just west of Boston, on 45 acres sculpted by retreating glaciers into eskers, steep-sided valleys, and a kettle pond. Here you’ll find inspiration for your own garden and a new appreciation for the varied plant life of our region.
