A Change In His Life, Changed His Perspective
Sometimes it takes a big event to make a big impact. This is exactly what happened with Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini. It began for him in 2001 when his
"son, Eric, then 16, was diagnosed with a rare and deadly form of lymphoma".... Then, "in 2004, a year after his son returned home, Bertolini suffered a spinal cord injury in a horrific skiing accident. He is now partially disabled"
....
What Bertolini learned was that the journey after leaving the hospital could be "very murky and difficult to navigate...It became apparent to me that we have big holes in the health care system that we need to fill in some way and that we need to treat people as whole people. We need to make sure that they're rehabilitated back to a life they enjoyed. And so we started building programs beyond just paying for acute care".
Mark Bertolini is now working to make a change in the healthcare system, beginning by redefining the word health. To Bertolini and his team, health is "a healthy individual who is productive. A productive individual is socially, spiritually, economically, and physically viable and viable people are happy". Aetna is now working to create programs in communities that will create a healthier mindset and community as a whole.
This is a great approach to healthcare, as it starts with a focus on people and where they are. Where one lives makes a huge impact on their day-to-day life, so it only makes sense to get the community together.
