Meet Justin, One Of Our Newest Clients

Justin, age 36, was a police officer involved in an accident while on duty. Here is Justin's
story in his own words. (story condensed)

"My wreck was on duty back in October of 2016...I was on my police motorcycle leaving the scene of one call headed to the next when a truck coming from the opposite direction pulled out in front of me. I tried to veer but the truck continued into my path. I struck the right front of the truck and flew over it landing in the roadway. It's then I knew something was wrong because I couldn't move my legs. I ended up having an open book pelvic fracture breaking my lower spine in three spots, during that I sustained two tears in my femoral arteries. I also shattered my right arch and broke two toes. After staying in a self-induced coma for over a month and a half I came to and was moved off ECHMO to ICU. After that I was transferred to a regular room for a couple of weeks then I went into the program over at Baylor Institute for Rehab. I stayed there for about another month trying to work on getting the ability to move around in the wheelchair.

I can't get approvals from workman's comp to attend physical therapy. They keep dropping the ball. It almost seems like they don't care about my health.  I just want the goal of being able to walk again or to be more independent, where I can spend more quality time with my two young kids. That's why I'm pursuing therapy and trying to do what's best for me. I do greatly appreciate this opportunity your foundation and sponsors are providing to me. I just want to be able to live a new normal until I can walk again. Most importantly I want the ability to not be afraid of the limitations this has put on my life. I also will have the ability to spend more quality time with my kids, who are my world".

Neuro Assistance is honored to be providing funding for three months of intensive therapy for Justin.

A Change In His Life, Changed His Perspective

Sometimes it takes a big event to make a big impact. This is exactly what happened with Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini. It began for him in 2001 when his  "son, Eric, then 16, was diagnosed with a rare and deadly form of lymphoma".... Then, "in 2004, a year after his son returned home, Bertolini suffered a spinal cord injury in a horrific skiing accident. He is now partially disabled" ....

What Bertolini learned was that the journey after leaving the hospital could be "very murky and difficult to navigate...It became apparent to me that we have big holes in the health care system that we need to fill in some way and that we need to treat people as whole people. We need to make sure that they're rehabilitated back to a life they enjoyed. And so we started building programs beyond just paying for acute care".

Mark Bertolini is now working to make a change in the healthcare system, beginning by redefining the word health. To Bertolini and his team, health is "a healthy individual who is productive. A productive individual is socially, spiritually, economically, and physically viable and viable people are happy". Aetna is now working to create programs in communities that will create a healthier mindset and community as a whole.

This is a great approach to healthcare, as it starts with a focus on people and where they are. Where one lives makes a huge impact on their day-to-day life, so it only makes sense to get the community together.

A Trial In Stem Cell Rehabilitation

A young man, Kristopher Boesen, chose to partake in the risky experimental surgery of stem-cell implants after receiving a spinal cord injury in his cervical spine. His doctors predicted he would have no functionality from the neck down. His Doctor, Dr. Liu and his team at USC, "injected 10 million AST-OPC1 cells directly into Kris' cervical spinal cord....

After a mere 3 weeks of therapy, Kris started showing signs of improvement, and within 2 months he could answer the phone, write his name and operate a wheelchair. He had regained significant improvement in his motor functions; which are the transmissions of messages from the brain to muscle groups to create movement.
Kris recovered two spinal cord levels which made a huge difference in his movement abilities. It was the difference between minimal movement or none at all and being able to function on his own. Kris regained the incredibly important aspect of independence."

We Need Your Help

Donate ~ Sponsor ~ Volunteer

Change lives; make a difference.

Your $25 donation will help provide clean catheters to a paralyzed child for one month when their insurance won't cover the expense.

Your $100 donation will help build a wheelchair ramp so we can get our clients out of rehab and through their front door at home.

Your $200 donation will help widen the doorways in their homes so their wheelchair can fit through the bathroom door. Insurance doesn't covers home modifications.

Your $500 donation will help provide life-changing medical equipment: wheelchairs and specialized shower chairs, etc. Most insurance only covers a small part of wheelchairs, if any, and no "bathing aids" are covered.

No donation is too small. Click here for information.
