Dear Mica Mountain Families,
We are in our final stretch of the school year. In high school, grades are final at the end of the semester which is May 28, 2021. Please help your student stay on top of their grades and finish the school year strong. Please login to PowerSchool to check your student’s daily progress at (https://ps.vail.k12.az.us/public/home.html).
We are very excited to have kicked off our PBIS program at Mica Mountain High School. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. In this program, we reward students for doing well with behavior and academics along with implementing interventions and supports to help our students who may struggle. Although we are at the beginning stages of this program, some key aspects this quarter will be our PBIS signage and our Bolt Card. Our signage communicates the behavior we want from students in specific areas and our Bolt Card is a card any staff member can give students for being caught in the act for doing good things on campus. The Bolt Card has specific actions for recognition. See below for examples.

For early planning, our final exam schedule in May is below and we do not allow early finals. If there are circumstances out of your control and your student needs to take finals after the scheduled days, let us know. Mountain students will take their finals remotely and all other students will take finals on campus. Please see the schedule for the entire final exam week.

½ Day Final Exam Bell Schedule (May 25, 26, & 27)
Zero Hour (7:40 – 8:40) (Only on Tuesday, May 25)
Final #1 (9:00 – 10:15)
Final #2 (10:20 – 11:30)

Lastly, tax credit contributions for 2020 have been extended and can still be submitted through May 17, 2021. Tax credit contributions are for extracurricular programs, please visit the VSD Tax Credit website below. Tax credits are a 100% dollar for dollar credit. For example, if an individual contributes $200 in tax credits, they will get $200 back in their state tax return. The money contributed is already funds being taxed and people can designate funds to specific programs. https://vailtaxcredits.org/
Sincerely,
Nemer Hassey

Class of 2022:
Our first graduating class of Mica Mountain is about to embark on their Senior Exit Project journey. One of the necessary items to have this roll out successfully is to have parents create their account on SchooLinks and link to their student’s account. An individual email will be coming out soon with your private access code that will allow you to link only to your student.
Parents of AP students:
The College board will be administering in-person paper and pencil tests May 4th – 14th on campus in a classroom. A test will be ordered for every student who plans on testing and has paid for their test by May 4th. If the student does not take the test during this window an online version of the test will be ordered and those tests will be taken at home remotely between May 18th and May 28th.
Here are some key differences between the two testing formats.
- Compared to the paper and pencil version, there’s nothing about an AP Exam being digital, or about any particular version of the digital exam, that inherently affects a student’s ability to get a particular score. All versions of the AP exam cover the same content, use the same question types, and in most cases have the exact same number of multiple-choice and free-response questions.
- Both tests are approximately three hours in lengthFor the digital exam, all answers to the free-response questions must be typed into the digital testing application
- The digital test can be taken only on the following devices:
· PC
· Mac
· School managed Chromebook
- If testing with the digital version, a student cannot go back to any previous question once they answer a question.
Testing Schedule:
-
Tuesday, May 4th: Human Geography 8:30 (on-line test 5/28)
-
Wednesday, May 5th: English Literature (on-line test 5/18)
-
Thursday, May 6th: US History (on-line test 5/12)
-
Tuesday May 11th: Psychology (on-line test 5/20)
-
Friday, May 14th: Biology (on-line test 5/27)

Servant Leadership is what Mica Mountain is all about. As we start to close out the school year let’s begin to search out ways in which we can serve each other. Our students are taught influence is leadership and we have the the ability to influence people every day. What better legacy to pass on to the next generation than to serve others. This month I challenge you and your family to take some time, serve each other and those around you.
**As a reminder, each Dare utilizes the C.A.R.E model, (Conversation starters, Acts of kindness, Recreation and rest, and Expression of love) and lets you know what the area of focus is.**

College Bound Bolts
Do You Want to Really Stand Out to Colleges?
When asked what qualities are valued in incoming students, many college admissions personnel frequently refer to the seven Cs: collaboration, commitment, character, curiosity, creativity, challenge and cultural intelligence. Students often find that it is difficult to present these qualities through their transcripts, high school resumes, and personal statements. One way to easily demonstrate all of these qualities is through participation in the AP Capstone program. The AP Capstone program demonstrates to colleges that you have gained highly-valued college-level academic, collaborative and research skills that many college professors and admissions personnel are seeking from incoming students.
AP Capstone graduates are skilled at:
- Analyzing topics through different lenses for greater meaning or understanding
- Planning and conducting a study/investigation
- Proposing solutions to real world problems
- Collaborating to solve a problem
- Planning and producing communication
- Integrating, synthesizing and making cross-cultural connections
What is the AP Capstone program?
Schools must be approved by the AP Program before they can offer the AP Capstone Diploma program and we are fortunate to be able to offer the program here at Mica Mountain High School. We have two outstanding teachers who will guide you through the program. Mr. Farr teaches AP Seminar and Mrs. Farr teaches AP Research. Both have had experiences guiding students through some amazing research projects in the past.
AP Capstone is a diploma program that has been around since 2014. This program signifies that you have completed a certain set of requirements in high school to earn an advanced diploma. (This is in addition to your basic high school diploma.) While participating in the AP Capstone program students are required take the two foundation courses that are required for the AP Capstone program, AP Seminar (junior year) and AP Research (senior year). In order to earn the AP Capstone diploma students must complete a total of four additional AP courses of their chose during their time in high school. Students must receive a 3 or higher on all of their AP exams to receive the AP Capstone Diploma.
Students who choose to take only AP Research and AP Seminar and receive scores of 3 or higher on both exams, will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. Students who receive scores of 3 or higher in AP Research and AP Seminar, but don't take four other AP classes will earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.
Mica Mountain students who participate in the program will not have to complete the traditional senior exit project. Your AP Capstone project is your senior exit project!
