Save the Date for SNHA's Summer Soirée!
Friday, June 12th

New decade. New location. New Experience. Our popular annual River Experience fundraising event is now the Susquehanna NHA Summer Soiree. Enjoy this year's premiere Summer Soirée on Friday, June 12th at the River's Edge at Long Level. This stunning riverfront venue offers dock access for sunset boat rides, and ample indoor and outdoor space for all our friends of the river to gather for an evening of food and fun. We need your support  to preserve, enhance and promote the heritage and natural resources along the river. Mark your calendars for June 12th!
Bridge Burner Challenge during Riverfest!
New Run & Paddle Race This June
Susquehanna NHA is working with Rivertownes PA USA and a great group of dedicated community members to ramp up Riverfest! The riverfront event on the last Sunday in June commemorates the Civil War skirmish that resulted in the burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge. Dawn to dusk events are being planned on both sides of the river.

Susquehanna NHA will present the Bridge Burner Challenge at Columbia Crossing as part of Riverfest on Sunday, June 28th at 9 AM.  Race to burn the bridge before the Confederates cross! Run from Columbia River Park at the bridge entrance up the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail to the Iron Furnaces. Collect all the combustible materials (relay stick) you'll need and race back to the River Park. Board your kayak and paddle across the Susquehanna north of the Covered Bridge Piers. Once across hand off the dynamite and paddle back on the south side of the Veteran's Memorial Bridge to Columbia River Park.

More details and registration information coming soon!

Doors open at 6:00 PM.

NW River Trail - Enola Low Grade
Public Survey to Close the Gap!
Manor Township, in partnership with Columbia Borough and the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority has commissioned a study to assess the feasibility of constructing a trail to close the gap between the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail and the Enola Low Grade Trail, through Columbia Borough and Manor Township. Your answers and opinions will help guide the path from Columbia to Turkey Hill. Take the survey and share it with other trail-goers!

The next public meeting for the proposed trail will take place at 6:00 PM on Monday, February 24 at the Manor Township Municipal Building, located at 950 West Fairway Drive (17603).  At the meeting we will review the two (2) trail alignment alternatives, results of the public survey, and discuss next steps of this project. Please plan to attend as your feedback is essential to this process

Poppy Playback!
On Saturday, February 1st, SNHA welcomed Poppy the Groundhog and the great folks at Raven Ridge Wildlife Center for an early prognostication and educational program all about Groundhog Day! Poppy is an ambassador animal for Raven Ridge because she cannot be returned to the wild due to dental issues that forced her incisors to be removed. Nearly 200 people came to the program to meet Poppy and learn about her.

What we didn't know was Poppy was going to hit the big screen during the big game the next day! Poppy worked with Bill Murray for the popular Super Bowl ad!  Poppy helps him drive. They go for a bike ride in the snowy woods. They go to an arcade to play whack-a-mole. Poppy catches a breeze in an open window. Check out the LNP article about Poppy's exciting filming adventure!

News from Community Giving

The Powder Mill Foundation awarded SNHA a two-year, $50,000 grant in support of public education initiatives at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage. The first disbursement of $25,000 was received in January.

The Powder Mill Foundation is the legacy of the late Louis Appell of York who provided so much leadership and financial support to the York community. He was instrumental in the creation and early support of this organization and the renovation of the Zimmerman Center.

We thank the Powder Mill Foundation for continuing Mr. Appell's belief in the mission of Susquehanna National Heritage area.
