Word from the Pastor:
Called to Serve
Weep with those who weep.
—Romans 12:15b

If you have seen the news over the past week, then you know about the historic flooding that has swept over Eastern Kentucky, Southwestern Virginia, and West Virginia. Thousands find themselves homeless, and still the rains fall and the floodwaters rise. I ask you to pray for our brothers and sisters throughout the region.

Our church has donated money to the United Way of Southwest Virginia to help flood victims, but we have an opportunity to do more. Conversations with affected residents have made it clear that they need clean water and cleaning supplies, and vulnerable mothers need diapers and the like for their children. The need is immense.

In response, we are calling on folks to donate water, cleanup-supply buckets, and baby supplies. We also need volunteers to collect, move, and deliver these supplies where needed. Our plan is to begin deliveries Monday, August 8.

You can bring your donations to the church throughout the month, as we will make a few trips to affected areas. Ring the office, and we will show you where to drop them off. Those who have questions or want to volunteer can contact Justin Miller at 423-764-7176 or email him.

If you would like to donate money, please write a check to FPC Bristol and designate “Minister’s Discretionary Fund – Flood” in the memo. You can also give online. All proceeds will go to buy supplies and provide financial assistance to those affected.

We need:

  • Large cases of bottled water (packs of 24 or more)
  • Large packs of diapers (various sizes)
  • Large packets of baby wipes

We also encourage you to assemble supply buckets and drop them off. Pack the supplies in the buckets and seal them in with the lid. These are the cleanup supplies to include:

  • 5-gallon bucket with resealable lid
  • 5 scouring pads
  • 7 sponges, assorted sizes
  • 1 scrub brush
  • 5 dust masks
  • 50 clothespins
  • Clothesline, two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.
  • 1 box dry laundry detergent, 50–78 oz.
  • 1 pair work gloves
  • 2 pair latex gloves (like Playtex)
  • 1 plastic bottle concentrated household liquid cleaner (like Lysol), 12 oz.
  • 1 plastic bottle liquid disinfectant dish soap (like Dawn), 25 oz.
  • 1 pkg. cleaning towels (18 reusable, like Easy Wipes)
  • 24-count roll heavy-duty trash bags (33–45 gallon)

In Christ,
Pastor Sam

Life Together for Home Groups
Our latest Home Group curriculum, Life Together, is about how we can be new persons and communities centered in the person and work of Jesus Christ. You can access the curriculum on our website. You can also watch for it to drop on our Home Groups Facebook site.
Wednesday Night Programming Resumes Aug. 17
We will resume Wednesday night programming August 17 with supper in the fellowship hall at 5:30, followed by activities for children, teens, and adults. John and Karen Vann will lead the adult enrichment program with a presentation on the FPC mission team’s trip to Brazil in June. And there will be no cost for supper on August 17, 24, and 31, thanks to a benefactor who has underwritten the cost to encourage people to come see what Wednesday nights are all about. We look forward to seeing you!

Our COVID Protocols
The session strongly encourages masks for those not fully vaccinated, or at higher risk of complications from COVID-19. The session encourages everyone to consult their medical professional about vaccinations and boosters.

Pat Flannagan Named
Choir Director
In recognition of Pat Flannagan’s talent and many years of service, in addition to the excellent job he is doing, we are pleased to announce that by vote of the session, Pat is no longer the Interim Choir Director. His love for the church and the choir shows in the way he serves, and we are privileged to call him our Choir Director.
Join the Sanctuary Choir
If you hear a call to be more involved in worship, join the Sanctuary Choir! We do our best to lead the congregation in worship, and we always need more voices of all types to lift up a song. You can join us at any time, but our rehearsals for fall begin August 10. Please consider participating in choir practice from 7:15 to 8:45 on Wednesday evenings and singing with us at 10:15 on Sunday mornings.

Dr. Bud Branscomb to Lead New Adult Study

Looking for a new adult Sunday morning class? On Sunday, August 21, the Reverend Dr. Bud Branscomb will begin teaching an inductive Bible study on the Gospel of John. The class will meet for eight to ten weeks in room 167, across from the Boy Scout Hall. Bud brings a wealth of teaching and pastoral experience from having served ministries in Kingsport, Hawkins County, and Greene County. With his wife Marg, who also worships with us, Bud cofounded Alpha/Omega Ministries, which works with 15 Tri-Cities congregations. After retiring as the CFO of the Appalachian Educational Communication Corp. (a group of six Christian radio stations), Bud then shared his pastoral gifts with several local churches, including Beidleman Presbyterian Church and Marthina Chapel. He is now the Executive Director of CrossBridge Ministries, which prepares persons to serve as tomorrow’s church leaders. There he teaches with Dr. Charles Stoner.

These are our current Sunday morning adult classes and Bible studies:
  • Reflection Class (Dave Welch), Room 167
  • Young Professionals, College Classroom
  • Line by line, verse by verse Gospel study, Room 123

Run for Sobriety Saturday
Brothers for Christ Community Response and Virginia Housing are sponsoring Run for Sobriety, a 5K fun run scheduled for 8:00 a.m. this Saturday, August 6, in Sugar Hollow Park. Come out, meet the vendors, and learn more about this community-building ministry while enjoying food, fun, giveaways, music, and more. BCCR works to provide a safe and stable environment for men and women returning to society from incarceration or addiction and to educate our community to their plight.

We would love to have a good presence of First Presbyterian members. Come out and enjoy the run and the activities afterward! To register to run, submit your name here. For more information or to sign up to be a vendor, contact Steven L. Davis Sr. (or 423-646-4070) or Ann Davis (or 276-6965493).

Please prayerfully consider supporting this ministry. You can do so online or by mail. Go to bros4christ.org and click on Donate; go to PayPal and enter bros4christ; or make a check or money order payable to BCCR and mail it to PO Box 16182, Bristol, VA 24209. See the contacts above if you wish to place an ad in the event’s program ($50 for a full page, $25 for a half page).

Organist's Footnotes
Sunday's organ music is Theme and Variations on All Things Bright and Beautiful, composed by James M. Bates (1952–2014). This work was written for the dedication of the Dobson-Rosales organ at West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro, NC, in 1999, and performed by organist Susan Bates, the composer’s wife. I will play “Theme and Variation 1” for Sunday’s prelude, “Variation 2” during the passing of the peace, “Variation 3” during communion, and “Variation 4 (Toccata)” for the postlude. We will also sing “All Things Bright and Beautiful” as our opening hymn.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Bates found his life’s calling in music while about to embark upon a career in medicine just before going to college. He earned the BM in organ performance magna cum laude from Susquehanna University in 1975 and pursued study at Yale, where he met his future wife. In 1985 he earned the MM in choral conducting from UNCG and in 2010 was awarded the DMA in choral conducting with an emphasis in early music, a true passion. He served as music director for many churches and on the faculties of Salem College, Greensboro College, and Averett University. He directed historic music programs for Old Salem, conducted the Moramus Chorale for 15 years, including several Moravian Music Festivals, sang in the Bel Canto Company, and founded the Greensboro Vocal Consort. A gifted composer with a profound understanding of artistic worship, he was also an avid gardener, amateur astronomer, talented webpage designer, and brilliant intellectual.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim and Susan when I worked with them on a concert at Emory & Henry College. Susan continues to serve as organist at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC.

The women of the Sanctuary Choir will sing John Rutter’s setting of “All Things Bright and Beautiful.” Rutter was commissioned by the Westminster Choir College to create his choral arrangement for Helen Kemp, well-known children’s choral director and clinician. Rutter’s choral anthem is an entirely different musical setting of Cecil Frances Alexander’s (1823–1895) time-tested text.
