A Message from Rev. Paula+
Beloved Community,

Brother, Give Us a Word - Revelation, by Br. Geoffrey Tristam, SSJE

"God creates with love and tenderness and in God's image. The imprint of God's very hand - the divine potter - is on everything he created. This intimacy between creator and created is very important, because the created world - the trees and flowers and birds, the sunshine - even the snow! - have the power to reveal God to us."

W hen I was in college - I can't remember if it was my first or second year - I took a pottery course.  Although longer than 40 years ago, I still remember so much about it.   The art building was in an old barn on the beautiful, hilly campus in the Berkshires, surrounded by wonderful expressions of God's grace in creation.  I remember walking the paths from my dorm to the barn.  I feel the crunch of the gravel beneath my feet.  I see the structure - a traditional New England barn, wooden and red, with large doors that were inviting me to enter. I feel the warmth of the space on the chilly days and the warm welcoming feel of the hard wood interior that did not feel at all cold or harsh.  I see the warm lights of the space beckoning me back after dusk for some time of comforting quiet.

The feel of the clay is like nothing else I've ever experienced.  At first solid- hard even- it gradually becomes more pliable as it is worked with a bit of water.  It has a smell, too, which I realized many years later while visiting family in northeast Texas is of the earth.  And the messy process of molding and shaping, of sometimes pounding the clay down to begin all over again, is one that I found deeply meditative.  More than a few times since those days I've thought working with clay is something I might like to do more of, though I've yet to make the time to do it.

Reading Br. Geoffrey's words this week brought all of these memories flooding back.  With the wisdom of hindsight and of many more years, I realize that this one course did more for me than satisfy a requirement for an elective. It showed me something of the beauty and power of creation in hands that are not divine.  It makes more grateful each and every day for the divine potter, who reveals so much more than a teenage girl's somewhat clumsy attempts to create something beautiful.

Peace & Blessings,
Paula+

Special Guest at Youth Sunday!
Next Sunday, the 23rd, we welcome Anthony Briggs, Executive Director of Crossroads Camp
and Retreat Center.  Anthony will be with us for the 10:00 AM service as preacher and join us for Coffee Hour.

All are encouraged to come and learn how you can be a part of this awesome ministry, a collaboration of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark and the New Jersey Synod of the ELCA.  From summer camp for kids of all ages and Family Camp, to retreats and monthly gatherings for prayer and renewal, Crossroads is a place all are welcome.

Rev. Paula is especially excited about summer camp.  Kathleen will be on staff again this summer and Rev. Paula will be the chaplain the week of July 12th, which just happens to be Youth Camp 1, for kids finishing 2nd to 8th grades.  If you have fond memories of going to camp as a kid and would like your kids to have a similar opportunity, Crossroads is a great place to go.  Check out their website here

FOOD BARREL RESULTS
SOUPER SUNDAY was a big success, with  146 cans of soup being donated to the barrel!  You can see from the graph below that Souper Sunday contributions have really shot up during the period 2016-2020.  This year, Campbell's won the "brand" prize with 79 cans.  Progresso second with 65 cans.  Two other brands came in with one can each.  48 of the Campbell's cans had the "Chunky" label.  Chicken soup (13 types) accounted for 58 cans and beef-related or steak-related soups trailed with 25 cans.  A few of the others in the mix were tomato (9), split pea (9), various kinds of vegetable (16), and clam chowder (5).  For those of you obsessed with statistical detail, Julia Dorn may be able to assuage your longing for more data.

Thank you to all who contributed!

IHN WEEK

HOSPITALITY IS WHO WE ARE
St. Stephen's opens its doors to IHN again from April 5 to April 11
We have served as a host congregation for the Interfaith Hospitality Network for the Homeless since 1987, part of a network of Essex County congregations offering homeless families a week 's hospitality  while the case management team helps them move toward permanent housing and self-sufficiency.

We will be on hand on Sunday, March 19, to talk about how  simple things like cooking a lasagna, reading to a three year-old and sleeping in the parish hall overnight, help families stay together at a time of crisis - changing the course of their, and their children's lives.

Signup online using this signup genius link
or at coffee hour with Sara Ruth Dorn for food preparation.

To learn more, email  Margo Greenfield  or Blair Majtyka.

I invite you to offer to write a meditation.
If you wish a specific date please let me know otherwise I will assign one to you.
I will then send you the specific canticle,  collect or other passage  upon which to  base your mediation.

All are invited to participate (the laity and the clergy).
Please respond as soon as you can. I hope to complete the assignments for March dates before January 31 and April dates before February 29.

Giving with Tithe.ly
Tithe.ly is a mobile-friendly app designed by a clergy person and used by thousands of congregations across the country.  With Tithe.ly, you can do one-time or recurring payments, as well as help with the nominal fee of using the service.  You can download the app from the App Store or Play Store, or you can do it online at tithe.ly/give. Enter St. Stephen's Church in the search menu and we should pop up.  You'll know it's  us if it says "St. Stephen's Church, Millburn, NJ 07041."

It's also possible to access Tithe.ly through our website - click on the "Give" button in the menu and you will be given the option to use Tithe.ly.

Don't worry.  If you prefer to use a check or cash, that's fine.  If you are a Vanco user and want to keep it that way, that is good, too.
