RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Journalism professor and collaborators awarded NEA grant
Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo and her collaborators were awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for their interactive visual art project aimed at facilitating conversations about structural barriers and societal biases facing women recently released from jail or prison as well as their wisdom and resilience in navigating challenges in returning to society. This project lies at the intersection of technology, art and social justice. Seo will serve as the project director and principal investigator and partner with Sarah Newman at Harvard University and Joey Orr at the Spencer Museum of Art, as well as journalism/strategic communication and arts students at KU. Read more about the project from KU News and NEA grant announcement. (Artwork is "Moral Labyrinth" by Sarah Newman)

Strategic Communication Chair Kerry Benson presented on how best to present complex scientific information and data to members of Phi Lambda Sigma in the KU School of Pharmacy on Feb. 11. Phi Lambda Sigma is the international pharmacy honors society that supports pharmacy leadership commitment by recognizing leaders and fostering leadership development.

Associate Professor Mugur Geana is the leading author of an interdisciplinary research article accepted for publication in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved. "Managing Technology, Content, and User Experience: An mHealth Intervention to Improve Women’s Health Literacy after Incarceration" will be published in May 2021 in the special TechQuity supplement of the journal. Dr. Geana and the school's Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Populations (CEHCUP) partnered with Professor Megha Ramaswamy's team at KUMC for this ongoing NIH-funded project that included the design, development and production of dedicated intervention delivery and research software and media content. The authors provide a step-by-step blueprint for how investigators can formulate, develop, produce, distribute and test high-quality mHealth technologies for the most vulnerable populations in society, hence bridging the gap between health disparities and promoting “techquity” for the future.
