I hope this message finds you and your family safe and well!

With the return to distance learning this week, we are excited to work with and see our students again!   And while school looks significantly different at this time, it remains critical that our students engage in their learning activities each day.  As shared in previous communications, establishing a good learning environment and a daily routine/schedule that students follow remain two of the most important factors to distance learning.  Moreover, we shared some important updates on expectations, grading and the remaining nine weeks of distance learning.  We have included that message from Dr. McLaughlin below.

In addition, we are extremely grateful to all of the FVSD Family for the videos and photos that have been shared with us over the last several weeks.  It is amazing to see all of the adaptations that families have made to be successful, while working at home. To highlight this work, we made a video this week of how the kids keep us smiling, even though the world is going through this crisis.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to taking care of each other, as we continue working through this very difficult and unique time!

With gratitude,

Mark Johnson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

UPDATE: Message from Dr. Steve McLaughlin, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services

Over the past five weeks, FVSD has quickly moved from full-day, in-person instruction, to remote or Distance Learning.  This is an unprecedented time for our educational system, and has required a thoughtful approach, allowing for our students, families, teachers, and support providers to settle within their homes, while quickly adjusting to teaching and learning expectations.  Since our dismissal in March, FVSD staff members have worked tirelessly to feed thousands of students each day, provide Chromebook access in home to any student in need, and develop weekly instructional units to keep our students engaged.  Additionally, our FVSD support staff members have put systems in place to reach out to our families struggling with social/emotional needs, providing translation services where appropriate, and reaching out to our students with specific learning disabilities to ensure equitable access to learning.  This transition has been no small task.  It has taken the collective efforts of our entire community, and for that we would like to thank you for your patience, support in the home, and for reaching out to provide feedback on how we may improve.  Click  here to read the full story!
Resources: Mental Health Resources for Students and Families
Talking to kids abut coronavirus

The outbreak of COVID-19 can result in stress, especially for students who may be struggling to process fear and anxiety related to the virus.  FVSD's Support Services team of School Counselors and School Psychologists has compiled information on our site which may be helpful for students and families.   Included are resources for talking to students about COVID-19 and coping with stress.  Moreover, links and information on FVSD's mental health and wellness resources, including  CareSolace , Outreach Concern and our middle school counselors, are available.  Lastly, there are a number of community healthy partners and emergency resources included for our families.  For all of our mental health and wellness resources, please visit our site  here .
