You're invited to learn about the opioid epidemic
Jeffrey C. Eisen, M.D., M.B.A.
The Opioid Epidemic: Awareness and Outreach, will be presented June 21 from 9-9:30 a.m. at the NEPPA Training Center in Littleton, Mass., followed by 15-20 minutes for Q&A. You are invited to attend the presentation in Littleton, or you can choose to view the live webinar.

The expert speaker is Jeffrey C. Eisen, M.D., M.B.A., Medical Director, Community-Based Services, Lahey Health Behavioral Services.

Dr. Eisen will present an overview of the opioid overdose epidemic that has emerged over the past several years. The discussion will help develop an understanding of what opiates are, how their use can potentially lead to addiction, how mental health professionals define an opioid use disorder, and what to consider if you or someone you know may be struggling with the use of opiates.

Board certified in psychiatry, Dr. Eisen guides and oversees psychiatry and medical care across Lahey's outpatient, children's, and family-based services. Before his medical training and career, he served as executive director of a nonprofit food bank and homeless services agency serving individuals with chronic and detrimental health-related disabilities.

Customer Service Conference is a success

NEPPA's Customer Service Conference, held last month at the Century Bank offices in Medford, Mass., included everything from a discussion of rising electric prices to a Duck Boat tour of Boston. Speakers included:

* Tim Herbert of Energy New England, who used charts, graphs, and humor to describe the factors making our region the hardest hit in the nation for electric costs.

* Barry Sloan of Century Bank, who talked about his bank's history and the importance of making connections with your customers - a striking similarity between our two industries.

* Robin Schell and Stacey Smith of Jackson Jackson and Wagner, who presented "The TLC of Customers during Turbulent Times," an interactive/role play demonstration.

Presentations are online along with some conference photos.

Jim Pirog receives Good Samaritan Award

Journeyman Lineman James Pirog of South Hadley, Mass. Electric Light Department earned the Medic First Aid's Good Samaritan Award for his quick action at a recent Kiwanis meeting. The award is given to those who apply skills in real-life situations that they've learned through NEPPA training.

Jim jumped up to administer abdominal thrusts to a man choking during the meeting's dinner. "I'm sure glad you didn't miss this Kiwanis meeting," the grateful man later wrote to Jim. "Without you it might've been a different ending!"

Jim has been at South Hadley Electric for just over two years, and also worked for Northeast Utilities for 34 years. "I never thought I would have to use my skills," he said. "All those years of training paid off."
In Memoriam: Dale Cronan

Dale Cronan, former Assistant Director at Concord, Mass. Municipal Light Plant, passed away May 19. He joined Concord Light in 1996 after more than 30 years at Boston Edison, and retired from Concord in 2013.

A strong public power advocate, he once recalled how in his earlier career he never had a single customer tell him they felt lucky that Boston Edison was their utility. "But I can't tell you how many times - unsolicited - I've heard that about Concord Light," he said.

"I was fortunate to have worked with Dale for 17 years," said Concord Light Director Dave Wood. "He was a dedicated employee and instrumental in establishing Concord's diverse power supply portfolio. His vision helped stabilize Concord's power supply portfolio while increasing our percentage of renewable energy sources at favorable prices."
Correction

A story in the May Newsline incorrectly stated that Norwich, Conn. Utilities was the first NEPPA member to participate in the American Public Power Association's Lineworkers Rodeo. According to Burlington, Vt. Electric, their utility took part in the APPA rodeo in 2003, 2004 and 2006. We apologize for the error.
