September 4th, 2020

Dear ASF Members and Friends of the Foundation,

As we enter the first days of Autumn within "new normal" we are working to develop our Events programming virtually and with a socially distanced "in-person" element in this ever evolving landscape.

We have adjusted our Fall programming with
- The Scottish NA Community Conference, now scheduled as a Virtual Event for December 4 - 6 in New York, with we hope limited in person opportunity to join us.  Further details below.
and
 - The ASF Wallace Awards Dinner has been postponed to April 12th 2021.

A calendar of Virtual programming is being developed for the weeks ahead, building upon on our bi-weekly #ScotsinUS podcasts, monthly Sounds from Scotland live streamed concerts.  More details of our past and future Pods and on line concerts below.

A special thank you to our Members. Your support which is greatly appreciated at this time.

There are indirect ways to support ASF too, and we spotlight two here. Please also note the donation links below.

EDINBURGH IN AUGUST IS FESTIVAL CITY - and this year the Festivals are going Virtual.
As galleries and museums slowly begin to reopen, mainly on a ticket in advance booking system, it was wonderful to see that the Edinburgh Festivals found  Virtual ways forward.

The Fringe raised $400,000 (approx) during the Fringe Festival month.

Additionally The 2020 Edinburgh Fringe Festival  featured over 300 artists on their Pick n Mix platfrom

Reopening of our cultural institutions ....

In Scotland, great deal of though has gone into safely reopening historic and cultural institutions in Scotland, the U.S. and Canada, a process which is slowly happening on either side of the pond.

The castles, abbeys and other sites managed by Historic Enviroment Scotland, Historic Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland, are reopening one by one.

We shared with you news last month of the National Galleries of Scotland
and National Library of Scotland reopening, and are delighted to share further updates.  Reopening is around  a timed ticketing system.

The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow also reopened August 17.

Dunblane Cathedral reopens on Wednesday 2 September
Aberdour Castle and Gardens reopen on Friday 4 September
Craigmillar Castle reopens on Friday 4 September
Dryburgh Abbey reopens on Friday 4 September

The National Portrait Gallery remains closed (an autumn reopening is slated on a date to be determined).

In New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art  reopened to the public on
August 29 and the Museum of the City of New York and the Morgan Library will reopen the following week, after Labor Day.

In Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago after a controlled reopening that began July 30 for Illinois residents only, has now opened to all.

In Washington DC, the National Gallery of Art has reopened recently.

In Ottawa, the National Gallery of Canada began a phased reopening on
July 18.

In Los Angeles, several museums reopened in early July, apparently too soon.  By early August, all the reopened museums there had re-closed.  We will continue to track this key issue, for many of us a vital sign of life and beauty!

That being said, virtually all of these require prior booking for timed tickets with a strong recommendation that visitors review specific site safety protocols.  In some cases, be prepared for temperature checks prior to entry.
Scottish Artist - ASF Spotlights Julian McLaughlan, Jr.

ASF reporter Jamie McGeechan turns our spotlight onto Ayrshire artist Julian McLaughlan Jr Art. His abstract works are bold and bright - his influences he notes as ...

.... " Picasso and Jackson Pollock play a certain influence in some of my works although I'd never studied them at school"
