GiveBIG Raises Over $44,000 for the Arboretum!

This year's GiveBIG, on May 8, was a tremendous success! A total of 185 donors helped us raise $44,206 in support of tree care, environmental education, and volunteerism at the Arboretum. This amount includes a matching gift challenge of $16,000 made possible by a group of generous Foundation members. A very BIG thanks to everyone who donated! Special thanks to 501 Commons for hosting this marvelous philanthropic event.

Foundation Seeks New Executive Director

After two years of great leadership, our current Interim Director Jane Stonecipher will be wrapping up her work this summer. We are now on the look out for an Executive Director who can lead the organization to an even higher level of success in fundraising, advocacy, and organizational operations. The application process will be open until a qualified candidate is hired; however, the initial deadline is June 10, when our selection panel will begin to review applications.

Spring and Summer Flowers for Sale

Need some flowers to brighten up your yard? Our  Plant Donations Nursery has a nice selection of spring-blooming perennials, including lovely native fringe cup, star-flowered Solomon's seal, and inside-out flower. You'll also find some hybrid oriental Solomon's seal (pictured). Right now, our  Pat Calvert Greenhouse has a great selection of summer-blooming lilies, including regal lily and turk's cap lily. All sales benefit the Arboretum!

A Wonderful Earth Day at the Arboretum!

More than 140 volunteers of all ages attended our Earth Day work-service event at the Arboretum on Saturday, April 20. They worked with UW Botanic Gardens and Seattle Parks gardeners on eight projects all around the park, pulling weeds, removing invasive plants, and spreading mulch. The impact was significant. Unifying the Garden

In the latest entry in the  Arboretum Bulleti n's Elements of Design series, Barbara Ashmun discusses the art of creating a beautiful garden with a unified look. She outlines different strategies for unifying the garden, including the use of repeated colors and shapes, as well as focusing on particular seasons of interest.

Become a Japanese Garden Guide

We are seeking new recruits for our guide program at the Seattle Japanese Garden. Learn about Japanese culture while meeting visitors from all around the world! We'll be co-hosting three guide-training sessions with Seattle Parks next month, on June 5, 12, and 19. Applications are due by May 22. All Arboretum Foundation members are invited to attend our Annual Meeting at the Graham Visitors Center on Wednesday, June 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. Learn about our accomplishments over the past year, participate in our Board of Directors election, and then enjoy a light reception out on the Visitors Center terrace. >MORE DETAILS & RSVP

Arboretum Loop Trail Wins State Award

Our new Loop Trail has just received a 2019 Spotlight Award for Facilities/Parks from the Washington Recreation and Park Association (WRPA). Berger Partnership accepted the award at the annual WRPA banquet in Vancouver, Washington, on behalf of the design and construction team. The award recognizes "the highest standards in design, development, and renovation of park and recreation areas." 

Urban Forest Symposium: Combating the Climate Crisis

Plant Amnesty and UW Botanic Gardens are hosting their annual Urban Forest Symposium at the Center for Horticulture on Tuesday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year's theme is "Trees for the Future: The critical role of urban forests in combating the climate crisis." Hilary Franz, Washington State's Commissioner of Public Lands, will join local experts for a robust discussion of climate change impacts to the urban forest, and how local communities are taking action.

Help Steward the Park!
The volunteer Garden Stewards work Tuesday and Thursday mornings, helping staff gardeners care for the Arboretum. Learn more and sign up online. 

May 11: Koi Day
Tomorrow's Family Saturday event (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at the Japanese Garden features koi feeding and other themed activities. Free for youth under 12.
