Hybrid Annual Meeting Plans on Track for October
|
|
David H. Zeman, DVM, PhD, DACVP, AAVLD Executive Director
|
|
Happy Spring AAVLD members! I hope you are all enjoying the pleasant weather and spring plants. Spring is always a special time, a time of renewal after the dreary winter. This Spring seems extra special this year in contrast to last Spring where there was so much concern and anxiety as to how the COVID pandemic would play out. We were all impacted by COVID, directly or indirectly. And if that were not enough, racial tensions and political tensions were high. In short, 2020 was a year most of us are glad to see over. However, now with over 150 million Americans vaccinated, and the nation cautiously returning to more normal routines, you can literally sense some fragrant optimism in the Spring air… and it feels and smells wonderful.
I am happy to report that plans for the hybrid annual meeting in Denver are well underway and on-track. Last week our Meeting Planner, Kaylin Taylor, visited the Gaylord of the Rockies Hotel and brought back a good report. The almost new hotel is beautiful, optimally sized for our meeting, and the staff is determined to make our meeting safe, efficient, and enjoyable. We know that not everyone will be ready to travel and that budget restrictions are still in play for many of our institutions and agencies; but we are projecting 40 to 50% of normal attendance this year. With the hybrid features, those that cannot make it on-site, can have a great meeting experience virtually.
To ensure the work and mission of AAVLD continues, we truly need your involvement at the annual meeting either on-site or virtually. We look forward to seeing your on-site or virtual registrations. Abstract submission has been open a few weeks now and closes June 1st. We need many more abstracts and posters for on-site presentations, virtual presentations, and posters. Please visit with your colleagues, students and trainees and encourage submissions to our scientific programs. Visit the 2021 Annual Meeting web page from the AAVLD main website for details on how to submit.
Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend on-site in Denver or virtually: October 22 – 26, 2021. We look forward to your involvement. Advancing the discipline of veterinary laboratory diagnostic science happens by all of us working together. Thanks again and enjoy that optimistic Spring air.
Sincerely,
David H. Zeman, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Interested in helping maintain and shape the public face of the AAVLD? The Communications Committee is forming a new subcommittee that will be tasked with reviewing requests related to the organization’s website, periodic review of the website, and overall maintenance of this space.
The Communications Committee is seeking volunteers to serve as members of a Website Subcommittee that will perform these functions. The website has recently undergone several changes and our committee would like to ensure that the website remains a functional tool for members, as well as an informative and attractive space for those seeking information about the AAVLD. No need to be tech-savvy—just someone interested in the website and its functionality and presentation. The subcommittee will meet virtually 2-4 times annually.
If you would like to serve on this subcommittee, please send a note to Grant Burcham gburcham@purdue.edu or Pam Ferro pferro@tvmdl.tamu.edu, current co-chairs of the Communications Committee. Thanks for your interest!

Join CDC's Monthly ZOHU Call
|
|
Dear colleagues,
As you may know, CDC’s One Health Office hosts monthly webinars, called CDC Zoonoses and One Health Updates, or ZOHU Calls. These webinars cover timely issues related to zoonoses and One Health topics in the United States. The ZOHU Call allows participants to share information and gain knowledge on hot topics in One Health; build partnerships across human, animal, environmental health and other sectors; create networks; and learn about emerging and important issues in One Health. Currently, more than 1,200 people subscribe to the ZOHU Call newsletter, including public health and animal health officials; epidemiologists; veterinarians; physicians; nurses; and other public health practitioners at the federal, state, and local levels as well as professionals from non-governmental organizations, industry, and academia.
ZOHU Calls offer free Continuing Education for a variety of public health, animal health, and human health professionals. Participants can earn CME, CNE, CEU, CECH, CPH and AAVSB/RACE. Each call is recorded and available online for those unable to attend live sessions.
Please help us by letting your colleagues and partners know about this exciting opportunity. We hope that ZOHU Calls will continue to be a valuable educational and professional resource for those involved and interested in One Health work. Suggestions for presentation topics and questions about ZOHU Calls can be directed to zohucall@cdc.gov, and consider subscribing to the monthly ZOHU Call News and Updates email newsletter.
Warm regards,
The One Health Office

The Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (OADDL) at Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine recently received a $20,000 donation from DetectaChem.
Based in Texas, DetectaChem is a privately held company and manufacturer of rapidly deployable, handheld, intelligent, and easy-to-operate detection systems. Specifically, OADDL worked with DetectaChem last year in the development of the company’s rapid COVID-19 test kit, which received emergency use authorization (EUA) by the FDA for COVID-19 testing in humans.
“OADDL has a great team and has been integral in the fight against COVID through large scale testing and validation. They have worked tirelessly and we definitely appreciate the partnership,” said Travis Kisner, chief operating officer, on how OADDL assisted his company.
DetectaChem partnered with OADDL in the summer of 2020 to run validation testing for the MD-Bio BCC19 Test Kit. The kit is a 30-minute isothermal molecular assay that detects the presence of SARS-CoV-2. The validation testing done at OADDL helped DetectaChem achieve FDA EUA approval.
Since the kit received authorization, it has helped the specific market of high volume COVID-19 testing with quick turnarounds. The kit contributed and was instrumental in helping universities have in-person classes, the Super Bowl halftime show and other sporting events to perform with a sense of security, costly rocket launches to avoid delay, multiple movie sets to continue with filming, correctional facilities to operate as needed, and many other examples of getting the world safely back to normal, with rapid and accurate testing.
All of these achievements can be linked back to the original validation testing that was done by OADDL, a hard-working savior in the fight against COVID-19 during this pandemic through mass testing and the validation of the DetectaChem COVID-19 test platform.
Kisner along with his team members Courtney Powell, Chris Gaffney and Katie Gaffney visited OADDL last week to continue technical and development discussions with Dr. Jerry Saliki, OADDL director, and his team on how OADDL can assist DetectaChem with extending the company’s detection technology to animal diseases.
“The partnership with DetectaChem provides a great opportunity for OADDL to contribute its expertise towards the development of diagnostic test kits, some which could be implemented at OADDL to enhance its diagnostic capabilities,” Saliki said.
OADDL is a member of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network and performs diagnostic tests for targeted surveillance programs and emergency response testing for foreign animal diseases including: Avian and Swine Influenza Virus, Avian Paramyxovirus-1, African Swine Fever, Classical Swine Fever, and Foot and Mouth Disease Virus. During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, OADDL was approved to run COVID-19 testing on human samples and handled a significant portion of Oklahoma’s testing until September 2020.

The goal of JVDI in Focus is to bring attention to an interesting article appearing in the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation. This month’s focus is the Guest Editorial in our May issue: “Leveraging and enhancing the value of veterinary diagnostic laboratory data,” by Brian McCluskey.
J Vet Diagn Invest 2021;33(3):396–398.
Extract. A favorite graphic of mine depicts the relationship of data, information, presentation, and knowledge (Fig. 1). Bowls of eggs and flour represent data; a baked, unfrosted cake represents information; a handsomely frosted and decorated cake represents presentation; and a plate of crumbs represents knowledge. This is precisely what many VDLs are baking today. The data stored in LIMS will be turned into information through business intelligence tools, and then presented to clients and other ‘consumers’ of information through laboratory online portals or other web accessible methods. This knowledge is then used by clients, researchers, epidemiologists, diagnosticians, clinicians, regulatory officials, and others to make better decisions.

AAVLD Membership Drive Competition – Earn a Free Lunch for yourself or your Lab!!
|
|
Dear AAVLD Members:
We hope you and your loved ones are staying safe during this unprecedented crisis. We want to reach out to you on behalf of AAVLD as co-chairs of the membership committee. The strength of AAVLD as a corporate body largely depends on the commitment of its members and we want to heartily thank you for support of the organization over the years.
Our vibrancy as an organization depends on a strong involved membership base. In this regard, we remind you of the ongoing membership drive competition which due to COVID issues, we have now extended the competition to September 30, 2021.
Competition Timeframe: January 2020 through September 30, 2021.
How to submit: The competition is open to individual members and to Laboratories. The goal is to grow our organization’s membership through the recruitment of new members and bringing back previous members whose membership has lapsed by two or more years. Each time you successfully sponsor a new member who subscribes, send your name (personal or institution) and the name of the new member to rozuna@aavld.org and burrough@iastate.edu.
Prizes: Winners will be selected based solely on the number of new or renewing (after ≥ 2-year lapse) members recruited. The winners will be recognized at the AAVLD annual meeting during the Foundation Auction. There will be two prizes – one individual and one Lab:
· Individual prize: $100 Visa debit card: treat yourself for being an outstanding supporter!
· Laboratory prize: $500 Visa debit card: use these funds to celebrate with your lab mates!
We wish you continuous safety during the months ahead and look forward to meeting you online at the October annual meeting.

Voices in Pathology: Asian-Americans
Friday, 28 May 2021
|
|
Our free Friday Seminar on the 28th of May is the third in our seminars to highlight the diverse experiences of inspiring minority pathologists - this time focusing on our Asian American colleagues.
I can't imagine our field without the amazing and continuing contributions of our Asian American (or simply Asian) colleagues - and their stories are just as amazing.
Please take two hours and participate in this seminar - it's a great opportunity to really listen, to learn, and just maybe we can all examine our own conscious and unconscious biases as we relate to those around us.
All attendees will receive 2 hours of free RACE credits and a certificate of attendance.

Human spirit is the ability to face the uncertainty of the future with curiosity and optimism. It is the belief that problems can be solved, differences resolved. It is a type of confidence. And it is fragile. It can be blackened by fear and superstition.
Bernard Beckett
Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding AAVLD Membership:
When are my dues fee due?
They are due November 15 for the next calendar year. Many members pay for the next year when they register for the annual meeting. Lead time is needed to finalize committee appointments for the new year.
Does it matter who pays for my dues?
No. Your status will be the same with their respective privileges whether you pay, your employer pays, or your Uncle Vinny.
Are Lab Accreditation dues different than Institutional/Agency membership dues?
Yes
· Laboratory Accreditation dues are different and separate and are related to accreditation only and go to fund the accreditation program only.
· Whether accredited or not, a Laboratory (or Institution/Agency) may additionally become an Institutional/Agency Member. By doing so they are supporting the broad mission of the AAVLD and these funds go to support CE and training and all other activities of the AAVLD. Institutional/Agency Members are highly valued members and are demonstrating leadership and belief in our organizational purpose.
Do Institutional/Agency Member labs have to pay for their employees individual dues?
No. A laboratory, institution, agency or department can become a member under this category even without signing up their employees. They are simply supporting the AAVLD mission with their dues payment. Some states are not allowed to pay for employee dues; and some states have budgetary restrictions.
