Vaccines Available for Students 12 and Older, and Their Families
|
|
Dear Team DPS,
As you may have heard, everyone in Colorado who is 12 years of age and older is currently eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. In DPS, we have about 27,000 students who are ages 12 to 15 years old and are newly eligible. We are excited to let you know that DPS’ health care partners would like to support our students and their families in accessing the COVID-19 vaccines as soon as possible, for those who would like to get one.
Please note, students are not required to get the vaccine, because we know this is an individual and personal choice. However, we encourage all in our school communities to receive the vaccine when they are able in order to increase our collective health and safety. We are happy to share that to date, more than 40% of 16 and 17 year olds in Denver have already received at least one dose of COVID vaccine. Every student and family member who gets their vaccine brings us one step closer to a 2021-22 school year that is much safer and less restrictive!
We’ve created this webpage for students and their families with all the information they need regarding student vaccinations.
To support students in accessing a COVID-19 vaccine, DPS’ health-care partners have multiple ways for DPS students and their families to sign up for a vaccine appointment. Visit our vaccine page on the website for the latest opportunities, many available for both students and their families.
Other Important Information
- The vaccine is free to everyone, although individuals may be asked to provide personal health insurance when setting up their appointment. Health insurance is not required to receive the vaccine.
- Students should reach out to their personal health care providers with any questions about the vaccine.
-
Alternatively, students can call our School-Based Health Centers at 303-602-8958 to learn more about the vaccine and whether receiving the vaccine is right for them.
Families who have any questions can contact our Family Helpline at 720-423-3054.

Transportation-Eligible Students: Opt-in for Transportation for the 2021-22 School Year
|
|
For students who are transportation-eligible for the 2021-22 school year and who intend on using the transportation services, their families need to opt in via the Parent Portal by the end of May. The opt-in form will close at the end of the month and will reopen in August.
Opting in this May helps Transportation determine the number of buses and drivers that will be needed to provide safe and efficient service for the 2021-22 school year. Choosing to opt out of transportation does not take away your ability to get service at a later time; families can simply change their selection in the Parent Portal. Click here to learn more about the Opt-in program.
Don’t know if a student is eligible for transportation? Click here to learn more about eligibility. If you have questions, email transportation@dpsk12.org.

P-EBT Benefits Available for Students in Eligible Households
|
|
In an effort to support Colorado families during the COVID-19 epidemic, The Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS), in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Education (CDE), secured USDA approval to issue Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) benefits to school-age children who would have received free or reduced-price meals during the time that schools were closed for in-person learning. Each household with an eligible child can receive an amount of $5.70 per child, per school day on a Colorado EBT card that will provide extra food benefits to create healthy, wholesome meal options for kids. Families that have not been auto-issued benefits or do not participate in SNAP should apply.
There is no separate application for P-EBT for the 2020-21 school year, but students do need to be eligible for free or reduced-price meals to qualify for P-EBT. Apply for free or reduced-price school meals at www.myschoolapps.com before the end of the school year. Access your benefits on an EBT or P-EBT card, which acts just like a debit card for grocery purchasing only. Please note: School districts have no role in funding. For more information and frequently asked questions, visit the CDHS P-EBT website.

YESS Institute Launches Contest to Recognize High School Heroes
|
|
In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Youth Empowerment Support Services Institute (YESS Institute) -- an educational nonprofit that supports the academic and social growth of disengaged youth -- announced the launch of its #YESSHero Contest. The #YESSHero contest will recognize Denver-area students who have demonstrated leadership and empathy for others in their community during the pandemic.
To nominate a #YESSHero, create a 30-60 second video identifying the name of the student you wish to nominate, their high school and brief detail of what they did to assist people in their community during the pandemic. Upload the video to Facebook or Instagram with hashtag #YESSHero by midnight on May 24. (Students can also nominate themselves.) The winning #YESSHero will receive a $5,000 scholarship provided by Lori Rickert Insurance Agency-State Farm for use toward their post-high school education.
