Helen Day Art Center is showing the mixed media exhibition Love Letters through April 18. Curated by Rachel Moore, Love Letters celebrates love and relationship through the lens of the digital era, contrasting the works of artists working before it began with those of artists working currently. Internationally renown and well-established artists Louise Bourgeois, Robert Buck, Molly Davies, Jim Dine, Tracey Emin, John Killacky, Eiko Otake, Brian Stevenson and Jeroen Nelemans examine love by focusing on individual relationships and love past, love lost and love lived. The artists explore the theme of love as it exists beyond preconceived notions and societal structures, viewing it as an action, an emotion and a driving force. In the artwork of Love Letters, love is memory, honor, hope and so much more. The concept of love is one of the rare truly universal aspects of humanity, and Love Letters taps into that universality, framing it in the context of the much newer concept of the digital era. The result is an inspired and unique take on a familiar yet still-captivating subject. Starting February 13, Intercalary Event 2020 will be on view at Chazan Gallery at Wheeler through March 4. An "intercalary event" refers to a day or month inserted into a calendar to allow said calendar to align with the solar year. February 29, more often known as Leap Day, is a intercalary event that will be occurring this year. Intercalary Event 2020 shows the artwork of Katie Bullock, Robert Horton, Sean Salstrom and Jocelyne Prince. Each artist looks for the places where data and objectivity intersect with new, surprise elements, resulting in something looser. Katie Bullock catalogues the everyday and seeks the complexity inherent in making these catalogues, championing the unknown through this accumulation of knowledge. Robert Horton grinds and polishes optics for telescopes and has spent over 40 years photographing the night sky. Sean Salstrom is a sculptor who looks at his art through the lens of action and performance, searching for the poetic hiding within absurdity. Jocelyne Prince uses glass as means to explore how actions can be recorded through material, translating poetic acts into performance. Intercalary Event 2020 uses the intercalary concept to tap into the science of the imperfect, reminding us that there's still room for something new and surprising in the narrative of objectivity. De Wind is Op! Climate, Culture and Innovation in Dutch Maritime Painting is on view through May 15 at New Bedford Whaling Museum. The exhibition includes up to 50 paintings, prints, and other artifacts from the museum's extensive Dutch collections. De Wind is Op! explores the work of the Dutch and Flemish Golden Age, themed around the wind, climate, and sea. The Dutch were pioneers in the genre of seascape painting, and the works in the museum's collection speak to a uniquely Dutch national identity. The Dutch were shaped by the sea, prospering as a maritime superpower through the 17th century. One in ten men in the country was at sea at any given time, resulting in a country with an intimate connection to the ocean. At the same time, the demand for fine art was at an all-time high as collecting became popular. This created a surge of seascapes painted with refined compositions and exquisite detail, but also with reality kept in mind. There was little need or want to embellish the ocean when it was already larger than life to Dutch culture. De Wind is Op! offers a unique portrait of national identity and a new perspective on the ocean.
