Fire Department Promotion Ceremony 07.28.2022
Congratulations to Dante Green and Michael Lowe, two of Plainfield's bravest, for their promotion to Lieutenant. On Thursday, July 28th, the City of Plainfield held a promotion ceremony for firefighters Green and Lowe at City Hall Library. Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, Council President Barry Goode, Council Vice President Charles McRae, Councilman at Large Steve Hockaday, councilwomen Joylette Mills-Ransome, Terri Briggs-Jones, and Ashley Davis were in attendance.
Lieutenant Dante Green, known around the firehouse as Brother Green, is in his 17th year in fire service. For the past several months, he has served in the role of Acting Lieutenant and enjoys sharing tips and advice with new firefighters. A native of Plainfield, Lieutenant green volunteers his time speaking to youth at Essex County Juvenile Detention Center. Firefighter Dante is thankful for all the support he received early in his career from retired Chiefs Belin and McCue.
Lieutenant Michael Lowe is a second-generation Plainfield Firefighter. Lieutenant Lowe's passion for firefighting started at a very young age after he witnessed a multi-alarm fire on West 3rd street in Plainfield where two kids were rescued. Following the incident, Firefighter Lowe found himself often pretending to be a firefighter in hopes of one day filling his father's shoes. A dream he achieved on September 4, 2013, when his role model and father retired, and he assumed his father's badge number of 53.
PPAC Open MIC Night 07.28.2022
Plainfield is where stars are made, and on Thursday, July 28th, at PPAC's Open MIC Night, we saw firsthand just how bright they shine. Brilliant artists, some as young as ten years old, came out to showcase their talents, and wow, were we blown away. The attending audience was serenaded by angel-like vocals, dramatic monologue, and introduced to the latest popular dance moves. Here's a glimpse of what you missed.
Queen City Mentoring Academy 07.29.2022
The Queen City Mentoring Academy (QCMA) is a three-week "Day Camp" offered to Plainfield young men and women entering the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Following their motto of "Honor-Respect-Commitment," implemented by founding Members Detective Ronald James, Detective Jesse McNeil, Sergeant Inesha Nash, and Officer Bernell Harrison, the QCMA seeks to educate the cadets about public service, including county government, the judiciary, emergency services, and law enforcement placing a solid emphasis on self-respect, respect for others, teamwork, and commitment to goals.

On Friday, July 29th, the Queen City Mentoring Academy held their graduation for the 2022 class of Cadets at Plainfield High School Auditorium. QCMA cadets filled the halls of PHS with chants that echoed pride, excitement, and passion. Considering enrolling your kids next year? Follow the link below.
Jazz on Park 07.29.2022
On Friday, July 29th, Plainfield Performing Art Center once again opened its doors to greatness. Jazz on Park featured vocalist, Carrie Jackson. Mrs. Jackson's deep and soulful voice captured the audience's heart with every note she sang. Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, Council President Barry Goode, Council Vice President Charles McRae, Councilwomen Terri Briggs-Jones, Joylette Mills-Ransome, and Ashley Davis attended Friday's performance.
Alpha Phi Alpha 07.29.2022
On Saturday, July 23rd the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Zeta Nu Lambda chapter spent the morning cleaning up on West 4th St. between Plainfield Avenue and Grant Avenue. That block has now been offically adopted by the chapter and will have at least two celan-up’s by the chapter each year. Chapter President Sherlock Dow says the chapter believes in community service and they are committed to helping the Queen City keep moving forward. Alpha phi alpha brothers were accompanied and aided by Councilwoman Terri Briggs-Jones. Let's follow in their footsteps and do our best to keep our Queen City clean.

Street Smart - Making Plainfield's Streets Safer
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Plainfield Joins Statewide Pedestrian Safety Campaign
Street Smart Kick-Off August 2, 2022

Mayor Adrian O. Mapp announces, “Plainfield will conduct a Street Smart NJ pedestrian safety education campaign aimed at changing unsafe behavior and reducing pedestrian-motor vehicle crashes in Plainfield, with emphasis on the intersection of Park Avenue and Front Street.”

Like other municipalities, the City of Plainfield has observed a rise in pedestrian involved accidents. The city hopes to instill a greater sense of caution in individuals operating a vehicle or traveling on foot. The Street Smart NJ campaign kick-off will take place on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at 6:15pm as part of Plainfield’s National Night Out program at Plainfield City Hall, 515 Watchung Avenue. Speakers will include Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, City Council President Barry Goode, Assemblywoman Linda Carter, Chair of County Commissioners Rebecca Williams, Union County Commissioner Bette Jane Kowalski, Police Director James T. Abney, Plainfield Schools Superintendent Diana Mitchell, Dave Behrend, NJTPA - NJ Active Transportation Plan, and Deputy Director Lisa Lee of EZ Ride.

Street Smart NJ was developed by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority in 2013 and is a collaborative effort between public, private, and non-profit organizations. Pedestrian safety is a nationwide concern, but it is particularly important in New Jersey, where the federal government has designated a pedestrian safety focus state for its high fatalities and injuries. Street Smart NJ, one of New Jersey initiatives working to help the state reach its goal of zero pedestrian fatalities, reminds people that everyone has a role to play in making our streets safer. Drivers need to obey speed limits and stop for people crossing; people walking need to use crosswalks (marked and unmarked) and cross with the signals; and everyone needs to avoid distractions. Ranking 18th in the nation in pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 people, NJ Pedestrians comprised 30 percent (173 people) of the 564 people killed in vehicle crashes in New Jersey in 2018. Statewide the Street Smart NJ campaign is managed by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), whereas EZ Ride will manage the local campaign in conjunction with city and community partners.

“Losing a community member is always devastating but the loss is compounded when it’s preventable,” said Mayor Adrian O. Mapp. “When we were approached with the idea of the Street Smart campaign, I didn’t hesitate to give it my full support. Motor vehicle regulations and road safety rules are in place to keep both drivers and pedestrians safe. The Street Smart initiative will remind our Queen City residents that it’s in everyone’s best interest to follow those rules.”

During the campaign, educational materials will be displayed at the intersection and around the community. The City administration, Plainfield Police, EZ Ride, and other community groups will distribute and post safety information to residents. During the campaign, local police will enforce the pedestrian laws in Plainfield and working with several partners – including City officials, North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), and EZ Ride – to educate people who are driving and walking.

Businesses, organizations and individuals interested in helping to promote the Street Smart NJ message in Plainfield, should contact Maximo Vazquez at maximo.vazquez@plainfieldnj.gov or 908-753-3421. To learn more about the campaign, visit bestreetsmartnj.org. The campaign is also on Facebook (/StreetSmartNJ) and Twitter (@njstreetsmart).
If you live, work, or study in Plainfield, take a 5-minute online survey in English or Spanish by August 2, 2022, and find out how much you know about NJ traffic laws and steps that drivers and pedestrians can take to make our roads safer.

* All who complete the survey will be entered in a raffle for a $100 gift card.

Long Hold Times or Excellent Care? Tell us about the customer service at your bank or credit union!
Good afternoon,

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recently launched an initiative to improve the customer service experience at big banks. The CFPB wants to hear from you and your clients about your experiences dealing with customer service at your bank or credit union – both the good and the bad. That’s why we’re extending the deadline to comment on our Request for Information about customer service at financial institutions until August 22, 2022.
We’re interested in hearing examples about ability to access information from your bank or credit union when you need it, including:

·       Experiences with “chat-bots” or automated responses
·       Long wait times when you need to speak with a real human
·       Differences in the quality of service online vs. in person
·       Difficulties accessing different types of information from your bank or credit union
·       Any fees associated with customer service or requests for information

We want to hear from you and those you serve (so feel free to forward this to your stakeholder list), whether it was a good interaction or bad. People should not have to go through a gauntlet to get answers about their bank account. By sharing stories and experiences with the CFPB, you’ll help inform future policy guidance and other initiatives about consumers’ right to access critical information about their accounts.

You can submit your comments through Regulations.gov until August 22, 2022.

Thank you,
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
