The Washington County Arts Council hosts “Water Warp and Weft” the photographs of Donna Newcomer from November 4, 2021 through November 30, 2021.

The exhibit is available in the galleries and virtually. Social distancing and wearing masks are required for all visitors in the gallery.

According to Dr. Newcomer, “The title for this exhibit is ‘Water Warp and Weft.’ My photographs predominantly reflect a water theme. Nature draws us to the water for many different reasons from the ocean to creeks and marshes. Water also weaves many patterns around our planet as well as our daily lives. For me and perhaps many, the “fabric” created by bodies of water brings balance, perspective, and peace in our lives; as well as patterns that support us in the abstract fabric of life. I hope you will enjoy Water Warp and Weft and find a few moments of peace and meditation as you view the exhibit.”

The City of Hagerstown is coordinating a Downtown Hagerstown Halloween Block Party to take place on Saturday, October 30 from 5-9 pm on South Potomac Street, between Washington and Antietam Streets. The street will be closed to traffic, and downtown businesses, area nonprofit organizations, and churches will be giving out candy to kids in costume. There will also be live music, performances, and contests. The event is free and open to the public.

The schedule of events consists of trick-or-treating for kids from 5-6:30 pm; a costume contest for kids on the steps of the Maryland Theatre at 6:30 pm; a performance by BISFA students at 6:45 pm; a performance by the Club Medics band from 7-8 pm; and a costume contest for adults on the steps of the Maryland Theatre at 8 pm. DJ Jay Heich will be hosting the evening and keeping the party going strong from 5-9 pm. Prizes will be awarded for the costume contests. After the block party ends at 9, there will still be plenty of things to do in various venues downtown, including live music at Prohibition Hub, Halloween parties at restaurants, and a haunted house at the ACT Black Box Studio.

“The block party came into being after the Alsatia Club cancelled its annual Mummers’ Parade due to the ongoing COVID situation,” Community Events Coordinator Kitty Clark said. “Businesses, restaurants, nonprofits, the Hagerstown Main Street Advisory Council, and staff from the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts all have come together to create this fun and family-friendly Halloween event in the heart of our Arts & Entertainment District.”

For more information, contact Clark at 301-739-8577, ext. 111, email kclark@hagerstownmd.org or visit @HagerstownMainStreet on Facebook.

Authentic Community Theatre presents One Night of Rent

Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at 7:00 pm

Back by Popular Demand, Authentic Community Theatre presents: RENT ONE NIGHT ONLY! Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general.

How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.

One plucky community theatre is about to produce a show called Murder Most Foul, a new “murder mystery play” with the same title as an Agatha Christie novel but with no relation whatsoever. The director/theatre manager, Gerry, thought producing the play was a good idea since the inexperienced playwright has agreed to let the company perform the show for no charge. Gerry, however, had no idea what disasters awaited him: the show is hilariously amateur, the “murder mystery” plot doesn’t really have a murder, and to top it off the playwright keeps changing the story and script only two days from its premiere! It doesn’t help that the cast is disgruntled, and the playwright accidentally deletes the entire sound effect board. All of the disasters come to fruition in Act III when the company performs the actual show with hilarious mishaps at every turn. Play On! is a hilarious love letter to community theatre.

TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR NOV. 20, 2021

ORCHESTRA CONCERT IN SHEPHERDSTOWN

The Friends of Music will present a Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra concert in Shepherdstown, WV, on Saturday, November 20.

The concert will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church at 7:30 p.m.

Entitled "Looking Bach-Wards," it will feature three works: Grieg's Holberg Suite, Bach's Concerto in C minor for violin and oboe, and Tchaikovsky's "Souvenir de Florence."

The featured artists for the Bach Concerto will be violinist Heather Austin-Stone and Oboeist Noelle Drewes.

The Orchestra's music director, Jed Gaylin, will conduct.

Admission to the concert will be free for Friends of Music members. The ticket price for others will be $35 per person. Tickets can be purchased on the Friends' website at www.friendswv.org; or by mail (FOM, PO Box 220, Shepherdstown, WV 25443); or, if space is available, at the church the evening of the performance. Visa and Master Card will be accepted.

Describing the concert program, Gaylin said: "This is an exquisitely rich program of energetic music with great sweep and melting lyricism. Grieg's work references a crisp 18th century feel starting with a brisk gallop. It ends with a folksy romp featuring fiddling by solo violin and viola. Interwoven are movements with great melody. Bach's Concerto for Violin and Oboe accentuates the rich, deep color palate of these two instruments. The lines intertwine in something akin to a shimmering vocal duet. The middle movement is especially powerful in its beauty. Tchaikovsky's memento from his time in Florence captures both the fiery virtuosity of Italian string instruments, as well as the cantabile of the country where opera was born."

The Friends of Music is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1999 to support and promote musical excellence. The Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra was established by the Friends in 2007 and held its first concert in the fall of 2008. Gaylin has been music director since 2012. He also serves as the music director of Baltimore's Hopkins Symphony Orchestra and the Bay Atlantic Symphony in New Jersey, and he is the Principal Guest Conductor of the Cape May Music Festival.

This season's Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra concerts are once again being presented with generous financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

Full information about the Friends, the Orchestra, and the concert season is available at www.friendswv.org.

Rebellion is nigh in Matilda JR., a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the "revolting children" who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.

Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts and could be the school pupils' saving grace!
