A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
While there are a number of similarities that connect the books of Exodus and Bamidbar, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks points out an obvious, but brilliant, distinction between them. Exodus is about the Israelites marching away from something (Egypt and Slavery), while Bamidbar is about the Israelites marching toward something (Nationhood and the Promised Land).

It is often (but not always) very easy to leave something (uncomfortable) behind while it is not always easy to move toward something. For me, It was easy (sort of) to leave the law, but the march (more like a trudge) to becoming a Rabbi well, that was difficult. There were significant costs to the journey, some emotional and some tangible. I do know that had I not had the goal of bringing our tradition to people in a unique and homey way, I am not sure I would have made it to ordination.

I believe that this is why Bamidbar begins with a census. The Hebrew used for “census” in this Parasha is “S’ooh rosh”, literally: “lift the head”. It is as if the text is saying to each person: “Lift your head and tell me your goals. What do you wish to achieve?” For the Israelites, as a collective, they wish to enter the land of milk and honey. The want to settle in the land that God promised to them.

These are good goals indeed. However, the Israelites have one other goal. If you recall, in the middle of the book of Exodus, the Israelites were given the Ten Commandments and the Torah. The other goal of the Israelites as they march toward the Promised land is to enter with the Torah, live by its laws, and bring its light to the World.

This Sunday we begin the Holiday of Shavuot which commemorates the receipt of that very same Torah that the Israelites were going to carry into the Promised Land. Join us on Sunday evening at 8:00 as we have a short service and then study. We will have a study session on our prayers. A study session about the Torah, a study session about our history, and more. It will all be on zoom, so bring your own cheesecake! (It is customary to eat dairy on Shavuot.)

Then on Monday, May 17th and Tuesday, May 18th we will have Shavuot services. Services will begin at 10:00 am on both mornings. On Monday, bring your family and we will bless all of the children. On Tuesday, there will be a Yizkor service. (Remember to light your Yahrtzeit Candle at sundown on Monday evening.)
