Just In Time Information - May 8th, 2020
Dear BK Parents and Students,

We hope you are all staying safe and healthy. In this Just in Time, we wanted to start by reminding our community of the five goals that we set for this uncertain period we are in that continue to guide our decisions and actions:
  • Prioritize the health and well being of our faculty, staff, students, and greater community.
  • Continue to provide a great education for all students via virtual learning
  • Maintain the strong sense of community we have here at Bishop Kelly
  • Find ways to acknowledge, appreciate, and celebrate members of our community

SIC Summer Reintroduction Plan
Sports and activities are a big part of many of our students lives and their physical, mental and emotional well being. Led by our BK Activities Director, Tom Shanahan, the Southern Idaho Conference (SIC) AD’s have developed a plan to reintroduce sports this summer, beginning June 1, 2020, in preparation for the 2020-21 school year. The plan is built with four goals in mind: 1) Protect the health and safety of students, coaches and spectators - physical, emotional and mental; 2) Consistency with Governor Little’s stages in Rebound Idaho; 3) Level and consistent playing field for all schools in the SIC; 4) Adaptability and flexibility as we learn and things evolve with COVID 19.

This plan was approved by the SIC Superintendents and has been communicated to all coaches. There is more to be done in the coming weeks, especially a document that sets clear expectations and common practices for all 20 high schools in the SIC. Thanks to Tom, Jon Ruzicka (Boise Schools) and Jason Ware (West Ada) for their work on this plan.

Enrollment - We need your help as Ambassadors for Bishop Kelly
Normally Spring Semester at Bishop Kelly means a lot of prospective new students and their families visiting campus for Shadow Days and school tours. Likewise, our summer is filled with camps and activities that bring students to BK, sometimes for the first time. These opportunities to share what it means to be a Knight with prospective families is incredibly valuable to our Admissions efforts, and unfortunately they are one more thing that has been disrupted because of Covid-19.

We are working hard to go virtual with our admissions recruiting efforts, but we need the help of our entire community to tell our story. Please connect with Bishop Kelly on social media, and like and share our posts about the great things our students, faculty, staff, and coaches are doing here at BK. Tell your friends about your BK student's experience with Virtual School, and encourage anyone you know who is frustrated with their current situation to check out Bishop Kelly.

We are pleased with our enrollment numbers as they stand today, but we know that we need to fill our classes with a few more students in order to not strain our budget in 2020 - 2021. Please consider yourself our greatest ambassadors and help us spread the word that BK has room in the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior classes, and we have generous financial aid to help families in need. When we all work together, this community achieves great things!

In normal times, Teacher Appreciation Week at BK is highlighted by fantastic food, snacks, small gifts and lots of notes of gratitude. This year, BKPA President Marlo Draper and Stacy Ray, a BKPA volunteer, organized a drive to ask for donations to the BKPA Teacher/Staff Appreciation Fund. Heartfelt thanks to Marlo, Stacy, and the 82 parents who made donations of over $8,920 to this fund! Many of their donations came along with wonderful notes of appreciation for our incredible teachers and staff here at BK. Our teachers and staff were incredibly appreciative of the gesture and the eCards/Gift card they will receive to the store they requested.

We hope you have had a chance to view the Senior Scholars Videos on our BK Spotlight YouTube channel . Thank you to our outstanding seniors who have given so much to our school and have so many great accomplishments. Thank you also to BK parent, Ed Moore, and the team at “116 & West: A Moore|Lodge Company” that produced the video.

Finally, thank you to the over 40 students and three administrators who came to BK during the  “soft opening” of our school this week for students in need of assistance. The students who came were very productive and on task, they followed all safety protocols, and were very happy to have a chance to work at school.
Spiritual Reflection on Endings, by Father Vance
The end of the school year is approaching very quickly.  Many teachers ended the online meeting of their classes this week.  Plans for Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercises in June are already well underway.  AP Exams start next week, and many students are madly preparing for final exams and finishing final projects.  Christian faith has quite a bit to say about endings, as well as beginnings.  From the perspective of our faith, even the ending that comes with death is the ushering in of the beginning of eternal life.  Jesus Christ is our paragon of this movement.

So, even as we here at BK concentrate on the ending of the school year, the ending of our beloved Senior Class’ high school career, we are called to also focus on the beginnings these things bring.  Our Seniors will move on to many exciting places and experiences, and the process of beginnings follows apace for the rest of us.  We will welcome a new Freshman Class, and the rest of the classes will each move up a grade!  And, the ending of the current crisis will eventually yield the beginning of new ways of relating and educating, of teaching and of learning, for our whole community.  How wonderful it is to remember that, with God, endings are NEVER the last word for us!  The beginnings God has in store for us may be mysterious, but they are undoubtedly waiting, because our God is a God of life rather than death, and of beginnings rather than endings. May God bless us to end well, so that we can be ready for the new beginnings to come!

We would like to encourage you to stop by Bishop Kelly to visit Our Lady’s Garden anytime. The roses are starting to bloom and it would be a wonderful Mother’s Day outing!.

Please know you and your families continue to be in our prayers. We hope and pray you have a relaxing, safe and peaceful Mother’s Day weekend!

God Bless,
Rich Raimondi

Knights of the Week
Each week Bishop Kelly faculty and staff nominate students, and students nominate faculty and staff, who have demonstrated the BK Way attributes of Faith, Safe and Caring Place, Academic Excellence, Activities, Honor, Generosity, Community, and Partnership.

Congratulations to this week's Knights of the Week!
Chance Schwehr
Academic Excellence

Chance has done awesome work in Chemistry all year, but his last project was absolutely outstanding. He clearly took pride in completing this project. I am so impressed with his work!

Steven Rivas
Honor

Steven had to travel to Texas to be with his grandfather who was ill. He communicated constantly with me and has been excellent about keeping up his studies, especially given the tough circumstances and iffy internet.
Joelle Alex
Academic Excellence

Joelle never gives less than her best efforts in class. She has an unassuming and quiet nature which compliments her sharp intellect and her strong work ethic. She consistently submits excellent work that reflects her mastery of the material. She is an asset to any class of which she is a member.
Faculty or Staff of the Week
Mrs. Stephany Herrera and Mrs. Cheryl Hutchinson
Academic Excellence, Safe and Caring Place, Faith, Community

  • Mrs. Hutchinson and Mrs. Herrera are both important figures to making BK run the way it runs. They connect with students during breaks and lunches. They make sure that every student that comes through BK has an amazing and great 4 year experience. They truly deserve to be honored for all that they do behind the scenes. I am very blessed to have gotten to meet these two administrators.

  • People are always "scared" of these 2 because of dress codes but they are actually 2 of the nicest and sweetest administrators I know. they don't get the recognition they deserve.

  • Both help keep our school safe and are very respectable women. They work hard and I can talk to them if I ever have an issue with another student.

  • Both Mrs Herrera and Mrs. Hutchinson are beautiful people inside and out.

  • They work hard and are really kind. They truly mean well and only want the best for their students

  • Mrs. Herrera and Mrs. Hutchinson are always putting in time to help Bishop Kelly be successful. They definitely deserve Knights of the Week.

  • They help keep our school organized and safe.

  • Both Mrs. Hutchinson and Mrs. Herrera do so much so the school to make sure everything goes according to plan. They take time to help students like us when we are struggling and they are always there if you ever need someone to talk to.

  • Both Mrs. Hutchinson and Mrs.Herra are very kind people to talk to if you have a problem. They listen and want to help in any way they can.

  • Everytime I walk by Hutch or Herrera, we often have a conversation about how our day is going. They are both very nice, and help out with this pandemic tremendously, and deserve more they get credit for!

  • Mrs. Herrera, thank you for helping everyone around the school and always saying hi at lunch. Mrs. Hutchinson, thank you for making sure people are behaving and helping organize things behind the scenes.

Mrs. Herrera
  • I was having problems with one of my teachers, I felt this teacher was unfair and rude which caused me to have multiple anxiety attacks. Mrs. Herrera listened to me and calmed me down and helped me through. Her act of kindness impacted me greatly.

  • Thank you Mrs Herrera, in the beginning of school year you would always say hi to me in the lunch room and I thought it was very thoughtful. Thank you for all you do️

  • Mrs. Herrera has helped me so much all my years at bk and if it wasn't for her and others teachers I wouldn't be at bk.

  • Every time I see Mrs Herrera in the hallway she smiles at me which makes me feel like a part of the BK community.

  • Mrs. Herrera is such a beautiful example of Christ in our school community! She has worked so hard within school and within Knights for Life and is a true leader and role model, and I'm very grateful for her!

  • Mrs. Herrera is so sweet and always tries to brighten up everyone's day, you can tell how sweet she is because she smiles to everyone in the hallway ! :)

Mrs. Hutchinson
  • Mrs. Hutchinson is always in a good mood, smiles at everyone, and although she may seem intimidating she's one of the sweetest ladies at BK. (:

  • I think Mrs Hutchinson deserves to be Knight of the Week because I have experienced how much she cares for us students not only in the classroom but in all aspects of our lives, and appreciation for that should be shown.

  • Mrs. Hutchinson is easy to talk to, compassionate, and goes the extra mile to make sure every student knows they can succeed.

  • Mrs. Hutchinson does a lot for the school besides get kids in trouble. Without her, so many students would not be able to achieve their academic goals without the selfless dedication of Hutchinson and Herrera, too. What they do does not go unnoticed.

  • Mrs.Hutchinson always says hi to me in the hallway.

  • Mrs Hutchinson is always encouraging me when it comes to basketball and never fails to make me smile!

  • Mrs. Hutchinson is always checking up on me in the hallway and always asks how I'm doing.

  • Mrs. Hutch, thank you for all you do behind the scenes. We appreciate you!
