Why isn't India using Polymer banknotes?
|
The switch from paper to polymer currency may be expensive, but the benefits gained will be worth the investment.
Banknotes or currency notes have been traditionally printed on paper made from cotton rags. The cotton-based paper is coated with special lacquer, applied in a microscopically thin layer to repel dirt and moisture. Although this material is still used all over the world, it is gradually being replaced by notes of polymer or plastic. Plastic banknotes are more durable since they are more difficult to tear, and more resistant to folding and micro-organisms. They also work better in ATMs and automated sorting operations. Although they are twice as expensive to produce, they last 2.5-4 times longer than notes printed on cotton-based substrate. Polymer notes are also difficult to counterfeit. Australia was the first country to introduce polymer banknotes in 1988. By 2019, more than 20 countries had partially switched over to polymer notes.

Drug marketer to be held responsible for quality
|
From March 2021, pharma firms marketing drugs will be held responsible for their quality. Currently, only the manufacturers are held liable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act
Pharmaceutical companies that market drugs will now fall under the ambit of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act (DCA), according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
This means they will be held liable if the drug is found to be spurious, or its quality is deemed sub-standard. At present, only the manufacturer of the drug is held liable under the DCA. Most pharma majors depute third-parties to produce drugs under ‘contract manufacturing’ deals. The pharma firms themselves, which market the drug, would lend the products their brand names, affixing their names on the packages for sale and distribution.

Ford introduces 3D printed security features to keep wheels safe
|
Automotive giant Ford has developed a novel way to combine driver biometrics with 3D printing to deter car thieves. The innovative new product—bespoke 3D printed locking nuts—can be used to keep alloy wheels safe from theft. Though cars are being built with increasingly high-tech security systems, they still haven’t stopped car thieves from going after valuable car parts, such as alloy wheels. To combat this type of theft, automakers have started placing locking nuts on each wheel, which can only be loosened using a special key. However, even these specific security measures have their weaknesses.

New Survey: Pharma Companies are looking to technology and digitalization, but will this be enough?
|
Pharmaceutical supply chains regularly underperform their counterparts in other industries. Pharma companies require more lead time for manufacturing, utilize less of their production capacity, and carry an unsustainable amount of inventory. By every measure, pharma supply chains could improve—and industry decision-makers have noticed. But driving changes goes beyond the standard call to simply digitize everything. The future of pharma companies depends on their ability to sense potential problems or changing demands in the supply chain and adapt their response.
