An Online Trove of Contemporary Jewelry

Have you ever checked out the Françoise van den Bosch Collection? In order to do so, you don’t even have to visit the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, where it’s housed. The foundation that built the collection has put every piece of jewelry on its website. A grid of pictures appears on the screen, in seemingly random order. You scroll down; text appears only when you hover the cursor over a photo.

When Cristina Filipe won the inaugural Susan Beech Mid-Career Grant in 2017, we knew AJF would be there later to help her celebrate her exhibition and book, Contemporary Jewellery in Portugal . The time has finally come! Cristina’s book launches on September 13; if you’re in Lisbon that day, please come help us celebrate with Cristina, and meet other AJF members who will also be in attendance.

This gallery guide supported the exhibition Cutting Edge: RAM Explores Contemporary Glass Jewelry, which was on view at the Racine Art Museum, Racine, WI, USA, Oct. 28, 2012–Feb. 17, 2013. Cutting Edge represented the intersection of two important elements of artistic production—art jewelry and glass. Whether engaging with long-standing traditions, such as producing millefiore beads, or utilizing glass in equally compelling, yet inherently modern, conceptual frameworks, the artists on show emphasized the flexibility of glass as a medium for expression. This exhibition was distinguished by artists who use a variety of techniques and explore a broad range of subject matter.
