2022-2023 Wednesday Bible Study
|
Join Wednesday Bible Study as we spend the next academic year learning about Peter, Paul, Jesus’ brother James, the Jerusalem Council in 50 CE, and so much more while we study the book of Acts of the Apostles.
This book chronicles the earliest days of the Jewish movement that became Christianity. Just as Genesis provides a foundation for Judaism, Acts is the foundation for our faith. We will explore how traditional Jewish practices evolved into the prayers and rituals we know as Christians. We use a discussion format rather than lecture style which results in deeply personal, meaningful insight.
Classes will meet from Wednesday, September 21, 2022-May 24, 2023.
Choose from 10-11:30 AM both in-person and on Zoom or 7-8:30 PM on Zoom.
Companion texts are free of charge and will be distributed in the first class.
Contact Ali Heard to register for this class led by Tracy Rubin, MTS, Harvard Divinity School.

News from Community Concerns
This year, the lives of so many continue to be affected by the pandemic. A tragic war in Europe is affecting food supplies world-wide. Our neighbors in Haiti are less safe and more in need of our help due to worsened political instability. We accordingly re-evaluated our grants to emphasize those organizations focused on health care, food security and homelessness, both locally and around the world. While we cannot control world events, we can do our best with what we have to help those most affected by them.
Herd Heroes has been a favorite of many at Christ Church, particularly children. Emilie Hitron has informed us that due to the instability in Haiti, its staff are currently unable to travel to Lazile (where we have our parish partnership with St. Luc’s). She asked that we place their grant on hold until they can safely work in the country. Fortunately, a new structure to house the goats is completed and they are thriving and breeding. New goats are being given to the families at St. Luc’s. Herd Heroes hopes to use its remaining grant funds from Community Concerns to provide formal vet assistant training for Gypson, a young man from Lazile who has been working with them. We have increased our grants to Innovating Health International and Midwives for Haiti, so the grant funds going to Haiti remain the same despite putting Herd Heroes on hold.
Last year we added World Central Kitchen to our grantees, designating those funds for India which was in the midst of a famine. This year, we asked to have our grant used toward providing meals for Ukraine.
Another grant recipient that the pandemic caused us to place on hold was Prison Ministries, which has run an Art and Spirituality Program for incarcerated women at Suffolk County House of Corrections at South Bay for over 20 years. We will re-start our grants to them as soon as they notify us they are again up and running.
The differing backgrounds, input, and enthusiasm of each of our members are all essential to the work the Committee does in helping the less fortunate. We welcome your questions and the participation of new members. Please contact any of us if you feel called to this very important and rewarding ministry.
