KATE SCEFONAS JOINS FAMILY BUSINESS
at LOCUST VALLEY FLORIST

Dear St. John's of Lattingtown family,

Our beloved sexton, Kate Scefonas will step down from her full-time position here at St John's of Lattingtown on Sunday, July 19th (her birthday) to join her family business at the popular Locust Valley Florist. We expect to name her new successor soon.

For more than 10-years, Kate has been so much more to us than a "traditional" sexton. She has overseen numerous church projects which include the 2019 major renovation of our beautiful St. John's Memorial Garden, and the relocation and construction of our state-of-the-art
Brian K. Tully Children's Playground.

Other significant projects under her direction have included the 2017 complete renovation of The Cottage, and much needed improvements to The Gatehouse, along with impressive church interior lighting upgrades. Kate was our technology "guru" helping develop an impressive social media exposure for St. John's, and has assisted with the development of our soon to be released new church website.

Many long-time St. John's members will agree that Kate's greatest gift to our community has been her ability to help coordinate the annual St. John's Country Fair. Last year, Kate almost single-handedly opened "The Barn @ St. John's" -- a trendy and highly successful thrift and consignment store which she dearly loves. She restored what was once a dusty 100-year-old storage area into a charming thrift store and continues to be a tremendous asset for our congregation. When Kate is not working at the florist shop, we are pleased to confirm that she will become our part-time General Manager of "The Barn @ St. John's." Those details will be announced at a future date.

The vestry, wardens, staff, and countless fair volunteers join with me to thank Kate for her tremendous ministry. We look forward to seeing her continued success in this next phase of her life's journey. Also, thank you to her entire family, most especially: husband John, son Wyatt, and stepchildren Gwyn, Byron, and Dylan for sharing her with us every Sunday.

If you would like to contribute to Kate's farewell fund, please do send a check to the office or

Every blessing,
Fr. Mark Fitzhugh, Rector

Welcome our Curate & Sexton!

Meet Our New Sexton- Frank Powers

We are thrilled to announce that St. John's parishioner Frank Powers has agreed to become part of the St John's team as our new sexton. Frank graduated from the Wharton School of the  University of Pennsylvania. He began his career in Philadelphia at the Hemsley Organization. He spent many years managing and leasing high rise office buildings.

Recently, Frank has been studying art at the Long Island Academy of Fine Art and the New York Academy of Fine Art.

We know Frank's expertise and enthusiasm will be a tremendous asset to our congregation. Frank will begin on July 20, 2020.

Waking Up White
and Finding Myself in the Story of Race
by Debby Irving

New Summer Reading & Discussion Series continues tonight,
Wednesday,  July 15th @ 7:30 pm

The St. John's of Lattingtown Outreach Committee invites you to join us tonight along with members of St. John's of Cold Spring Harbor, Emmanuel Church, Dublin, New Hampshire, St. Mary's, Newton Falls, MA, and other North Shore churches for a summer reading and discussion series of Debby Irving's book: "Waking Up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race."

Each session will begin and end with prayer and a brief Scripture passage. This would be a wonderful introduction to anyone who has not yet begun the critical work of self-examination on issues of race in these times. To register for our discussion group, Click here!  Book is available as an ebook, audio book or paperback. For more info- frmark@stjlat.org

Introducing NOSHkids
NOSH kids including Kate Blundin (3rd from right) next to Antonia Guerra,  former warden of St George's Episcopal Church in Hempstead (longtime friend of our parish) and Taylor Overstrom (far right).

St John's Youth in Action!

P arishioners Taylor Overstrom and Kate Blundin held a planning meeting at NOSH HQ for their new program- NOSHkids.  They are set to announce NOSHnibbles and we are very proud of them! NOSHnibbles are easy carry feeezer bags filled with non-perishable yet nutritional ready to eat foods that require no utensils, washing up or hot water. We will distribute to our homeless friends  in Glen Cove and to the people Antonia serves in Hempstead on behalf  of FACT ACT a charity that enables the mentally channeled to stay living at home. Their clients suffered when the local pantries closed and they called NOSH for help. Bringing them NOSHbags and NOSHnibbles will help them feel full and loved!
