From the outset of the pandemic, almost 50 percent of San Francisco's total COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed among Hispanic and Latino residents. That statistic far outweighs infection rates reported among other communities and raises concerns about health inequities in San Francisco, given that Hispanic and Latino individuals compose roughly 15 percent of the city's overall population. As such, the San Francisco Department of Public Health has partnered with the San Francisco Latino Task Force (LTF) to strengthen education, community engagement and access to diagnostic testing in areas where the new coronavirus' impact is most severe. The San Francisco LTF offers a range of resources related to COVID-19 support and recently announced a disaster relief assistance program to provide financial support to undocumented people facing challenges amidst the pandemic. The initiative was one of several relief programs established in the wake of the virus outbreak. This week's "Online Briefing for Faith Leaders," hosted by the San Francisco Interfaith Council and supported by the COVID Command Center's Joint information Center Virtual Outreach Team, will shine a light on the critical and timely work of the San Francisco LTF and its COVID-19 response efforts.

Valerie Tulier-Laiwa
Coordinator, San Francisco Latino Task Force
Valerie Tulier-Laiwa works as the Coordinator of the Latino Task Force which was formed within days of San Francisco's Shelter in Place Order. As a long-time Mission community activist, she has worked closely with other community organizers and with the SF Human Rights Commission Director, Sheryl Davis, to begin addressing the impact of COVID-19 on the Latino community. The Latino Task Force was originally formed to connect Mission District community-based organizations with city government resources. It is now a city-wide collective that has grown to 30+ community-based organizations with over 13 active committees and involves various officials and representatives from local, state, and federal government. In this work, Valerie practices the Mission's values that she was taught; grounding the COVID response with community-driven, community-led and community- implemented solutions.
