Robert Wadsworth -- Capt. Bob of Niantic's Sunbeam Fleet -- surprised us last week with the gift of a model of Latimer Reef Light. Capt. Bob believes the model was built by a former keeper, who lived at Latimer's.
It needs a little restoration, but fits nicely into our Lighthouse Gallery. Here it is to the left of another treasure loaned by the Sunbeam Fleet -- a lighthouse keeper's uniform.
In fact, everything in the photo,
above,
was donated or loaned to the Custom House within the last ten years, from left: Bob Landry's stately Harbor Light, Capt. Gumb's wonderful
Gull
-- the original of which he built on a beach at St Martins, and Donald Geehan's model of the USCG barque
Eagle
.

You'll remember last spring the City cut down the large Empress tree --
Pawlonia tomentosa
-- at the west front corner of the Custom House. It had to be done; the roots were breaking into the sub-basement wall.
A few weeks ago, we starting seedlings of
Pawlonia tomentosa
,
above.
It's a fast-growing tree with gorgeous lavender flowers and soft, large, heart-shaped leaves. These plants will be given away later this spring to anyone making a donation to NLMS. We love trees!

Keep Up with What's Up
The Custom House Maritime Museumhas been accepted into the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation's
2020 Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) program.
The grant brings in two experts: a building inspector to assess the custom house, and a collections specialist to suggest a path forward for putting our collections in order. This grant is the next step after last May's fabulous Re-Org of the museum collections room. It also is the step before receiving a grant to bring in a specialist ti cataloge our collection!

Below
,We wanted to send a message to all our friends to say that we hope you are well and managing to keep spirits up during this strange time.
This storm will surely pass as they always do, but in the meantime, let's look outside so we don't miss the magical fact that spring is underway. Look at trees, look at the sky, keep those spirits up. Happy SPRING! (And, yes, that's a bee in the lower right.)
