Dear Delone Catholic Families,
This week was Teacher Appreciation Week and we want to thank all our teachers for their hard work and dedication in doing their best to meet the needs of our students and to guide them in fulfilling our mission to become true and faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. As their response to the coronavirus pandemic and quarantine orders has demonstrated, our teachers and teachers nationwide perform an essential service to our students, their families, and the community at large and they are to be heralded as modern-day heroes.
I also want to thank all the members of our extended family who came together to support Delone Catholic's Day of Giving. The outstanding outpouring of generosity gave testimony to the impact that Delone Catholic has had and will continue to have on our community and beyond to wherever Squires and Squirettes may find and avail themselves of opportunities to be "Doers of the Word."
We received word that Bishop Gainer has offered to hold one baccalaureate Mass for all the diocesan high schools. That Mass will be May 27 at 7 p.m. It will be live streamed on the diocesan YouTube channel and recorded to be watched later if people wish. I enthusiastically encourage all our senior class families to join in and participate that evening. That said, our chaplain, Fr. Morelli, has expressed a keen desire to celebrate a special Mass for our own graduating seniors and I will share more on that development and options being explored for graduation and senior award ceremonies in a later update.
Additionally, the Superintendent and the diocesan principals have been grappling with the concern that we and many of our students and families share on how the present response to the pandemic will affect students' grades. We understand there are many variables which must be considered on how best to minimize the effect this unprecedented event has on our students. While we cannot compensate for all variables, we believe we can do our best to be as equitable as possible when assessing how 4th marking period grades will be determined. Various grading options have been considered, including Pass/Fail. Inquiry into pass/fail grades with other agencies, however, has led us to believe that such an approach could negatively affect NCAA eligibility, scholarships, GPAs, and other student outcomes.
Therefore, we feel strongly that students should engage in the curriculum offered to maintain good academic standing and maximize their course grade outcomes.
Consequently, as long as students are engaging and completing assignments to the best of their ability in their classes (to be measured by earnestly attempting and submitting at least 50% of their assignments), they will not receive a grade lower than the average of the first three marking periods. Students not achieving this standard (of 50% submission) will receive a grade of no lower than 60% for the 4th marking period. We will operate from a premise of good faith that students would have performed either better or commensurate with their performance prior to school closure, not lower.
While we have stated that not completing work will result in a grade not lower than 60%, such a result can negatively impact a student's final average. The expectation, then, is placed on engagement and work completion which can only work to a student's benefit and shifts concerns from worry about grades to emphasis on
learning
. Students feeling overwhelmed or anxious are strongly encouraged to continue to reach out to their teachers and their guidance counselors. As a staff, we are aware of the circumstances impacting our community, our schools, and our country during this crisis and we continue to remain "reasonable, flexible and creative" in our approach to educating our students.

Congratulations to our York County Science and Engineering Fair Winners
|
Four Delone Catholic High School students received recognition at the York County Science and Engineering Fair (YCSEF) held at Penn State York March 7-10.
Freshmen students Jacob Fleming, Lily Shriner and Keefer Stiles and Sophomore student Tyler Hillson all placed first or second in their respective categories. Shriner and Stiles both received a special award from the American Meteorological Society for their projects measuring the health of waterways in Adams County. Stile's project also earned him the Stockholm Junior Water Prize. Shriner's project was recognized by for excellence by York Township.
Hillson's project "Effectiveness of cephalopod ink as a non-toxic, naturally derived flame retardant" earned first place in his category, was recognized for special awards by the American Statistical Society and ASM Materials Education Foundation and earned him a $1500 award with the Adhesives Research Award. Hillson's work was ultimately recognized when he was named Reserve Grand Champion in the Senior Division.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Delone Catholic will be unable to host the Ladies Tea this spring. We pray that those suffering during this time will find strength and healing, and that scientists and doctors will find treatments and a cure that will soon allow us to gather again. This special event will be held in 2021 as long as it is safe to do so.

SportsLeader Virtue of the Week

One pillar of the SportsLeader program is a weekly virtue that we incorporate into our athletic practices and throughout our school community. Every week, we will share them here to encourage the students to take the virtue into their homes as well!
Our virtue this week is
REFLECTION - The strength to give serious thought and consideration to the important things in life. Our fast-paced world tempts us to give importance to superficial things, things that pass away in moments and to neglect the most important things in life, the things that lead to eternity.

From the Athletics Department
|
The on-site sport physicals scheduled for June 4 is now postponed until Monday, July 27 from 4-6 p.m. at Delone Catholic High School. All safety measures and recommendations will be observed if we are able to host physicals at that time.
In light of the uncertainty of certain activities in the future, student athletes are encouraged to get physicals for the upcoming sports season from their own physician or organizations that provide physicals for high school sports.
Below is the link for the PIAA physical form that must be filled out by your physician if you choose to go to your private provider or organization that provides sport physicals.
***Please note, physicals are only valid for the upcoming school year if they are completed after June 1st, 2020.***

Due to the uncertainty of what will be permitted over the next couple of months, it has been decided to cancel all summer youth sport camps hosted by Delone Catholic for this year.
This also includes the Flaherty Football clinic held by the Gastley organization.
Thank you for your understanding and we are excited to host our youth camps once again in 2021.
