FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
Each morning at LC, we start with a brief Advisory session.

Advisory is designed this year to specifically address the social and emotional needs of students grappling with the educational changes that Covid-19 protocols have required: remote learning, social isolation, etc.

This morning I led a group of about 75 students in Advisory and had to stop short when I read the discussion prompt for the day: “Think about a time in the past week where you saw someone else experience a big emotion (joy, sadness, anger, excitement). Try to think about three things they might care about that could cause that emotion.” (Note: this curriculum was developed last summer and was not timed to coincide with anything happening politically here in America.)

Hoo-boy.

This week saw a lot of emotion coming from a lot of folks across a lot of social and political fronts. I hope that you had some good and rich conversations with your students about everything we were seeing in DC.

Our students come from families who have experienced America very differently, thus, their viewpoints about how to best govern this country are very different.

I’m so proud of how civic-minded and politically-active so many of our students are and I encourage staff to model and encourage civil discourse about current events in classrooms whenever it is appropriate. I think it’s critical that our students be able to assess the sources of information with clarity, integrate information from a variety of solid sources into the formation of their opinions, defend their opinions articulately, and listen to others’ opinions as thoughtfully as possible.

This world needs well-educated and compassionate leaders and learners and I want very much for LC to be the model for this work.

LC Principal
TENTATIVE PLAN TO MOVE TO HYBRID LEARNING
There was good news from our school district this week when our Board of Directors announced March 1 as the targeted date for grades 7-12 to move to hybrid learning. (Hybrid learning is the model whereby half of our students will attend in-person classes on M/W, and the other half of our students will attend classes on T/Th. Currently the plan is to have students attend alternate Fridays as well, but there are a lot of details around the scheduling that are yet to be fully determined.)

I want to emphasize that March 1 is tentative – the Board of Directors was provided with a number of factors that are going to need to align before we can bring students into the hybrid model.

We need to consider school transmission trends, county case trends, the bandwidth of our contact tracing program, the fidelity with which we can sustain cleaning standards, substitute capacity for when staff are needing subs, compliance with OSPE and DOH safety regulations as well as with Labor and Industry regulations. We also will be monitoring our school-based Covid testing program and the status of vaccine distribution in our adult and student population.

Since March of last year, our district has taken advising from Spokane Regional Health District and the Washington State Department of Health when addressing in-person learning and we continue to do so moving forward.

Please continue to be our awesome partners as we begin preparations to be ready for hybrid learning as soon as it is deemed safe and appropriate.

Talk to your Tigers about how important it will be to follow all safety protocols upon return.
Remind them that school will look different – there will be new procedures in place to ensure everyone’s safety and they will feel awkward at first.

Let them know that there is apprehension and optimism and a whole host of responses to the idea of some sort of return to in-person instruction on everyone’s part and that everything they are feeling and wondering about is completely okay.

We have a lot of messaging to do in the weeks ahead.

It’s my plan to send out a Monday video message to families (brief!) each week updating you on all of the news we are gathering and creating.

I am also going to plan on some webinars (they may be district-wide or LC-specific – still thinking…) so that families can ask questions and have them answered as transparently as possible as we move ahead.

We know that this past year has been nuts. You’ve been incredible and our staff has CRUSHED it in this remote environment.

Bottom line – we all want our kids taken care of safely and educated soundly. Let’s start leaning in and getting it done.

#TigerStrong – Principal Marybeth Smith

INFORMATION
Preparing for 2021-2022 Registration: We will begin registration for 2021-2022 in January. The process will be all online through PowerSchool. In order to prepare, it will be important for you know your login and password to PowerSchool and you can get into the program (the login/password is different from your Clever/MS365 login/password).

Directions: Using a computer (not your phone), go to PowerSchool and try log in.

If you get in, you're good to go! Please write down the login/password in case you forget it before January. There is a chance that even if you know your login/password, it might take you to a screen that says "an administrator has changed your password". You will need to select a new password, so just follow the directions on the screen and enter your current password, then choose a new one that is 8 characters or more.

If you can't get in, your password will need to be reset. Click on the link below to send an email to Mrs. Meyer. Provide your name and simply ask for a password reset. You will receive an email back with directions on how to use a temporary password so that you can get into the system and choose a new password. Please write down the login and new password you choose in case you forget it before January.

PSAT Update: Due to COVID rates and Spokane Regional Health Board guidance Spokane Public Schools has cancelled the PSAT Test for 11th grade students. Historically the test is given in October, but was delayed this 2020-21 school year until January and has now been cancelled with no additional opportunities provided by College Board. For any students who are interested in the National Merit Qualifying portion of the PSAT test there is an alternate qualifying opportunity by taking an SAT test. Here is the guiding document from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Free Online Tutoring: Gonzaga University and Priority Spokane are partnering together to provide free tutoring and educational support for K-12 students in Spokane County. Gonzaga and Priority Spokane said they have partnered together due to the academic struggles K-12 students face in the pandemic. Parents are asked to sign up for one-hour sessions 24 hours in advance online here.

REMINDERS
PowerSchool: Parents, did you know that you can set up your PowerSchool account to send you updates on student grades, attendance, and more? You can also set up recurring emails with updates on student progress. If you need to set up your account or can't remember your login, contact TheresaM@spokaneschools.org. Here are two quick videos on how to use PowerSchool and how to set up the reminders.

What if I don't have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account?
  • Contact Karen Payne and request the Parent Account Access ID Letter which contains the steps to set up an account, and the access ID and password to add your student to your account.
  • You will need to request the Parent Account Access ID Letter for each student who attends Spokane Public Schools. You will only need to create one account on the PowerSchool Parent Portal and just link all of your students to the one account.
How do I find my student's grades on the PowerSchool Parent Portal?
  • Once you are signed into the PowerSchool Parent Portal, from the left menu choose Grades and Attendance. You will see a column labeled Q1, which shows your student's Quarter 1 grades.
  • You will also see Q2, Q3, etc. These can be used to view grades during the quarter as well as final grades once the quarter and semester end.
What if I want my student's report card mailed to me?
  • Contact Karen Payne to request that your student's report be mailed to you.

  • Bullying and harassment
  • Pornography
  • Reference to drugs & alcohol
  • Violence

  • Only allow use of electronic devices in common rooms of the home, not in bedrooms (if possible).
  • Show an interest in what your child is doing online.

  • Agree to put all electronic devices to bed on the charger at a designated time each night.
  • Regularly review browsing history.
While the district is actively working to provide services to limit potential student exposure, such as high quality internet filters, that service should never replace other safety practices.
