This is the fifth in our series of on-line training modules designed to
update practicing clinicians – primarily psychiatrists and nurse
practitioners - with respect to classes of psychotropic medications
and/or specific psychopharmacologic content areas.
We believe that these trainings will be relevant for your practice.
Importantly, we hope that they are more engaging than typical long
lectures accompanied by numerous slides, reviewing medication after medication, or study after study.
This module features David Hellerstein, M.D., a Professor of Clinical
Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and a Research Psychiatrist at New York State Psychiatric Institute specializing in the treatment of affective disorders including the pharmacological treatment of bipolar depression.
Dr. Hellerstein’s presentation will help learners to:
- Recognize the importance of long-term treatment planning in bipolar disorder,
- Recognize the advantages and limitations of the major treatment guidelines for treating acute bipolar depression and for the maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder,
- Summarize the limited current findings in order to make more informed recommendations for treating bipolar depression, and
- Recognize how the more recently approved antipsychotic medications fit into the prescribing clinician’s tool-box when treating bipolar depression.
Presentation topics include choosing a medication regimen for acute
bipolar depression, maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder, and FDA approved medications for bipolar depression. Additionally, David
Lowenthal, M.D., J.D., a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at
CUIMC and the Medical Director of CPI, asks Dr. Hellerstein questions
that flow from the material being presented.
